To use Paladmedes skill, you need a total of three grade 3 rearguards on your field. Heart is not included because the Heart is not a unit. Same way cards in your soul are not considered units on the field.

7 is the ideal number now since most meta decks draw a ton and triple drive gives you more cards in hand. Save you room to add another good grade 1 or 2 to improve your deck. Grade 3s kinda get cluttered in the hand nowadays.
