One of the best channels on TH-cam: how it’s managed to stay under a million subs for this long is baffling. You put so much work into your research and presentation, and your custom movie trailers are the best. Sorry of gushing. My friends and I enjoy digging through your library and shocking each other with your discoveries.
Bro, this channel is fuckin amazing ! Don't think there's a single other one on youtbe, where I'm looking forwards to a new release as much as with this one. Oliver's review choices mirror my childhood to uncanny degrees. And his editing and narration is top notch! the editing gig on the last kumite is well fuckin deserved! Also the way he talks about action editing, I know he knows what he is doing. Got high hopes for TLK as well as his career!
Sometimes it's better for good channels to have smaller cult followings. I've noticed larger channels tend to sell out, and you get 16 adverts per video, as well as product plugs. Tends to ruin the experience for me.
@Dr. Loomis yea, cuz he talks like a calm, thoughtful, measured grownup and not like a loud, obnoxious, hyped up, gitty, pseudo-funny, over the top, complete moron that this infantile world of imbeciles, brains fried through tiotok and youtube shorts, with the attention span of a goddam fly seems to love so much. All the more reason why I love Oliver's content!
A criminally underrated Van Damme action adventure drama film that deserves more recognition. I remember watching this on NBC an thought it was pretty good.
Great to see this film getting a retrospective. This was Van Damme at his peak in Hollywood during the early to mid-90s along with Sudden Death, Universal Soldier, Hard Target, and Time Cop. I saw all of them at the cinema as a teen, and Nowhere to Run always struck me as one of his more 'serious' efforts. Great review!
There's a lot of comedy in the first half of the movie too that keeps the pace up and the movie never gets boring.....and the motorcycle chase scene is some of Van Damme's finest work. A most worthy entry for JCVD where 1) he explains his accent 2) shows his ass and 3) does a split
I like how passionate this channel is about '80s horror and action movies, in a totally positive and non-toxic and non-reactionary way. So many channels are nothing but sad, hate-filled geeks spewing negativity about the present, instead of actually showing any real affection for the past.
I always really liked this film! I remember seeing it in theaters at 11 years old with my best friend and Step Dad with them thinking it was only okay...Although more dramatic driven than previous Van Damme films I love the score, the fights are pared down to basic fist to fist brawling, and Ted Levine is as usual a nasty villain. Underrated in my opinion.
Your intro trailers are reliably some of the best edited I have EVER seen (sometimes even making mediocre films look amazing) *I have no doubt you are gunna do an amazing job on your first feature film!*
Awesome as usual. This definitely looks like one of Van Damme's more simpler movies. I may not have a full opinion on it, but it does look like a worth watch. Also cool to hear about "The Last Kumite", and congrats on being hired to help edit it.
Rented this out in the day and I remember it being very much under the radar for a Van Damme film. Watched it again during the 2020 lockdown and thought it held up pretty well tbf. More subdued than his usual movies but it was better than I'd remembered it to be.
I'm so glad you're back with the JCVD movies, which is how I found your channel in the first place :> Hope this gets enough views to convince you to do the rest of his movies from the 90's Death Warrant (1990) Double Team (1997) Legionnaire (1998) Knock Off (1998)
Congrats on the Editing gig that is fantastics, been a fan of the channel for a long time and happy to see you get this gig This film is really JCVD's most underrated. I don't see discourse about this film that much and he does a great acting job
Another epic review!! Oliver, when will you be doing a retrospective on “No Retreat No Surrender” and the film “1984” (based on the novel 1984)? I think these would be great films for you to cover.😎👍🏼
Certain shots and camera angles of this movie were certainly inspired and unusual for the 90s. Without being a special movie, it was kind of what you wanted as a theatre audience back then.
Robert Harmon who directed both The Hitcher, and Nowhere To Run has also worked with Tom Selleck as the Director of the Jesse Stone Films including episodes of Blue Bloods.
It appears that Robert Harmon's specialty is directing features with action scenes whilst focusing on the story at same time - along with being "low key" - I like both Nowhere To Run and Jesse Stone TV Movies in equal measure.
I'd seen every Van Dammage film in the theater from Cyborg forward. My buddies and I would be seeing it anyway. When it ended, my buddy leaned over to me and said "That was actually...pretty good!". After being used to the cheese of the likes of Double Impact, this was Citizen Kane (we loved Unisol). Certainly much more dramatic than Van Dammage's earlier fare, with some crisp editing, an incredible cast and the insane hotness of Rosanna Arquette, this is compulsively rewatchable for me.
Haha, Rosanna was smoking 🔥 in the film. I would have escaped from prison yet again if I was JCVD's character, since the ending implied he couldn't have all that ever again (the little family bond they'd created).
The sheriff in this movie I remember him being on an episode of Saved by the Bell, he played the brother of principal Belding 😂👍 great video and review thank you 4/16/23
This movie is very nostalgic for me. I first remember watching it on late night HBO as a teen in the early 90s. I enjoyed it then and I still do. Great review and trot down memory lane.
even tho I have 0 intrest in jcvd I watch to see a rock solid review by oliver . easily the top reviewer reminds me of the good days of sat morn movie reviews
one fun fact of this Rosanna Arquette disliked working with Jean-Claude Van Damme and stated in many interviews that she only took the role because good parts were few and far between.
I remember watching this on VHS back in '93 as I was a huge Van Damme fan boy back in the day and I quite liked it the film even though it was slow in places. Music worked well for the film and I liked the family aspect to the film which has some good scenes. Even though Van Damme hasn't got much range he does show emotion/feelings in his facial expressions very well. Nowhere to Run is a masterpiece compared to a lot of Van Damme's later films.
I just saw this movie for the first time, in full, because of you. I also saw Timecop earlier this year, again because of you. I enjoyed both. Thank you.
I know a lot of people don't see much in this film, but I love it, and I really feel like it doesn't get the respect it deserves. The cinematography is beautiful, the atmosphere is very welcoming, and the relationships are quite touching. Van Damme's best film behind Bloodsport.
I can't help thinking this would have been a much better film had Marquand not died. His skills in isolated people and situations were shown with Eye of the needle and jagged edge. Van damme Dosent have the range and certainly wouldn't be cast if Marquand had lived. Ackland was at the same taking any and all work due to the cheques and Arquettes career had spiralled downward after a good start with desperately seeking Susan and after hours. Ted Levine a great and underated actor and Harmon's career appears to have tanked Great retrospective
Editing an actual movie, well we all know you can amp up an audience with these retrospectives but hopefully you can slow things down between the action for a some heart and story as Urioste and Link did in 1988. Caring about characters adds so much to action. Fingers crossed you can pull it off!
I loved Nowhere to Run when it came out. And I didn't realize until right now that Fast Five kinda ripped off the prison bus escape scene for their opening scene. I remember it feeling familiar somehow, but I couldn't place it at the time.
Credit to van damme for taking this type of role instead of the typical martial arts action film but he seemed so out of his depth in this film with so many top actors around him....I thought legionnaire was a better film acting wise...van damme seemed much MORE of a better actor in his native French language films
For some insane reason, I always got this confused with Lionheart. Maybe it's because I knew that one as AWOL and it also involved Van Damme being a fugitive. Who knows?🤷🏾♂️
Even as a kid who consumed all JCVD's stuff, I forget about this movie all the time. The only thing I really remember was a blonde woman he was in love with and a barn. And not a lot of the martial arts I was looking for, which was disappointing. I'll need to revisit this
Damn... It amazes me that people can make a movie actually LOOK like it was shot in the 80s, when Hollywood sequels to 80s films don't even TRY!!! I wish you guys the best of luck with this movie of yours. :D
An underrated Van Damme flick that isn’t as well known as his other movies and not really an original plot. I love the Pink Flamingos 🦩 line, anybody who has seen Scott Adkins recent Accident Man 2 pays homage to this. Also Rosanna Arquette never looked hotter than she does here.

It's always a better day when we get new content from this channel.
A criminally underrated Van Damme action adventure drama film that deserves more recognition. I remember watching this on NBC an thought it was pretty good.
It never aired on NBC
Wow! Congratulations on editing your first feature film, Oliver.
Great to see this film getting a retrospective. This was Van Damme at his peak in Hollywood during the early to mid-90s along with Sudden Death, Universal Soldier, Hard Target, and Time Cop. Aah Time. Cop - he’s best surely. 🤔
@@serenityinside1 you misspelled Hard Target.
Cyborg is worth a mention too.
I loved the villain (AKA Buffalo bill) from Silence of the Lambs too. Great bad guy!
@@GisherJohn24Au revoir !
There's a lot of comedy in the first half of the movie too that keeps the pace up and the movie never gets boring.....and the motorcycle chase scene is some of Van Damme's finest work. A most worthy entry for JCVD where 1) he explains his accent 2) shows his ass and 3) does a split
Definitely intend to support that Last Kumite project you’re involved with. Best of luck to you.

Legionnaire (1998)
Knock Off (1998)
I don't mind the lack of action. I always enjoy Van Damme when he gets out of his comfort zone.
great news, always loved your trailer edits at the start and end of your retrospectives, looking forward to a feature-length Oliver Harper cut!
I seen my first pair of boobs in this movie always would rewind as a kid lol
What a great start then fella - a 10/10 pair don’t you think ?!! 😆
Congrats on the Editing gig that is fantastics, been a fan of the channel for a long time and happy to see you get this gig

This is an underrated classic.🏍
When I saw this in the theater, I felt that the motorcycle chase was tacked on. It was like it was from a completely different movie.
Certain shots and camera angles of this movie were certainly inspired and unusual for the 90s.
Without being a special movie, it was kind of what you wanted as a theatre audience back then.
My mom and i watched this tons together. Loved it. . I'll have to revisit!
Great choice Oliver! One of my favorite Van Damme movies!
The opening prison bus flip sequence was really good 🎥💥

19:33 JCVD knees him so hard in the chest the guy becomes someone else.
I cannot fkkking WAIT for "The Last Kumite" to come out!!! I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing Cynthia, Matthias, and Billy IN ACTION again!!! ♥️💯👍
Well done Oliver that is awesome you have been chosen to edit
I seen this once on TV back when I was in high school and it was pretty enjoyable. Great video.

I had this on vhs as a 10 year old i was constantly rewatching this I loved it. Great review Olly
This movie is very nostalgic for me. I first remember watching it on late night HBO as a teen in the early 90s. I enjoyed it then and I still do. Great review and trot down memory lane.
I remember when they used to show repeats of this movie on tv. Last time I saw it was probably early 00s
Great choice! Missed these reviews, I don’t seem to get many notifications for the channel these days 🤷♂️
Roger Ebert is not wrong this plot has been used a million times...but it works and Rosanna Arquette never looked hotter.
AGREED!
Her silhouette was 🔥
RA was at peak hotness here.
Did I hear that correctly? You are editing "The Last Kumite", that's awesome.
Favourite quote from the review, “character is a total knob”
Great to see this film get noticed. I saw it upon release and remember enjoying it.
Awsome review!
Oliver should do a retrospective and review on IN THE LINE OF FIRE.
even tho I have 0 intrest in jcvd I watch to see a rock solid review by oliver .

one fun fact of this Rosanna Arquette disliked working with Jean-Claude Van Damme and stated in many interviews that she only took the role because good parts were few and far between.
I never thought Rosanna Arquette was that great of an actress anyway.
simple story shows that you dont need anything terribly fancy for a movie to work
I enjoyed it when it came out. It was something different than his usual film at the time.
Great review as always 💯
I hope Space Ice covers this film
I expect he will at some point.
Top shelf review as always. 👏👍👌
A very impressive job as usual.
That part with the driver is also a trained sniper still cracks me up
My FAV Van Damme movie, THANKS Oliver!
Following 90's action flicks would you consider doing "Under Siege"?
Oh definitely!
"You've got to get up every morning with determination if you're going to go to bed with satisfaction." *George Lorimer
Don’t forget he also played rod belding on saved by the bell
I remember when this came out... JVCD said he wouldnt do any martial arts in it because he wanted to make a serious movie to show his acting skills...
Exactly- think Oliver has missed that a bit !
@@serenityinside1 he touched on it in the video.. i just started writing before the video finished.. but he mentioned it

Movies epic! 📽️
One of my favorite, it was on usa a lot, or was it tbs.
Why is your channel not pulling views anymore? Is youtube messing you up? Your videos are so good... wth
Yeah the views are down on this review. Difficult to know if people aren't being notified, followers aren't interested in this movie? Who knows.

I have always loved nowhere to run, one of Van dammes best.
Indeed, though not sure that’s saying a great deal tbf !
My brother played keyboard for a live show stan bush did a few years ago in Germany, the soundtrack should be great!

For me this movie is great. I must watch IT again. 88 films edition will be Perfect
My favourite JCVD movie
Do a retrospective on The Omen franchise.
Manners pal , manners 🙄
Can you review the Mighty Ducks trilogy one day?
Not really my cup of tea im afraid
i watched it on opening weekend
I still enjoy this movie
Kickboxer 3 retrospective/review? NGL I love kickboxer 3 as a kid and still watch it occasionally.
Space Ice will love this one - Van Damme !
Looks like one I'd enjoy with my wife! Ted Levine and Joss Ackland are always good fun!
Great movie
The experts don’t know shit
Van Damme without any kicks is like drinking a non alcoholic beer.
He's always got that recoiling punch.
The action was slick and brutal.
You've reviewed most of Van Damme's early work. However, you haven't reviewed Death Warrant (1990).
Yeah not reviewed it yet but I have provided a full commentary track to the movie on my channel.
I'm so happy.
We’re pleased for you ..
