This episode was meant for me. I live in diaspora and I don't have parents unfortunately. I came back home last November, and I came to a realization that my aunties, etc feel entitled to my diaspora money since I do not have a family. But honestly, I have enabled the behavior. Hii mwaka hata shilingi situmi. This is for me and all about me. Thank you Lynn for this conversation.
But again, let me say this first, when I first came to US, I went to college. The first two years i didn’t pay for fees. When I find out, I came to realize that it was paid by individuals who wanted to support students who did well from the minority group. The point I wanted to say is that, you can come up with a structured set up that makes sure that the money you send goes to programs that are worthwhile. Pay fees for a kid that is in need. The point is do something that is not strenuous to you. Sorry for the typos if any.
How I wish I knew this years ago, I would be very far. The black tax always left with me almost nothing for myself and the feeling of entitlement is the most annoying. Anyway, it is not too late to restructure my life and stop being the savior. Am going to pull myself from this dark hole called black tax and yes, "your emergency is not my emergency" . I sent money to my mother while working as a gas station attendant and going to school in diaspora. She didn’t do as we planned. When I asked her why she didn’t do as we agreed, she responded “ so that small money of yours is why you want to question me?” That was 15+ years ago. That was the LAST time I ever sent her money. I’ve also stopped sending money to anyone back home coz I sent it and it was wasted. Now, I have peace of mind and planning for my child’s college and my retirement. Ungrateful and entitled. Hi Lynn and team, great new intro "Learn, Unlearn, Relearn". Excellent topic and conversation! I am neither Kenyan or African, but as Caribbean woman living in the US, so much of this conversation is relatable and relevant! It's been a few years since I unsubscribed to the concept and behaviours of Black Tax. I realized that it was costing me not only financially , but emotionally and mentally. I learnt that I could't move forward effectively and efficiently because I pulling and shoving other people to move forward with me. I've lovingly dropped the weight of other people and have experienced more abundance and ease in my life!
Woooosh, this topic is a thorny subject for Africans. I watched my parents support my grandparents to the end. Then we took care of our parents after their retirement till they left us in 2014 (D) and 2020 (M) respectively. I think my generation (Gen-X) will be the.first ones who won't depend on our kids. We are breaking the curse of dependency 😮
@keepitreal335 the curse of dependency, not of helping our parents! I hope it stops with my generation, we should be leaving an inheritance for our children. The Bible speaks of this in Proverbs 13:22!
This is a very relevant topic. What I find disheartening is when this "help" is taken for granted. Especially not considering that it's actually from a point of sacrifice. And this part of being turned into an ATM is a sore one. But once you determine enough is enough, the "saviour complex" gets out of the window. I think that there is also demonic spirits that attach themselves into this
On the question about feeling the need to sacrifice for your parents because they sacrificed for you....I honestly think that it's not our responsibility to take care of our parents, but it's their responsibility to take care of us, as their children. They sacrificed for us because that's their responsibility! My responsibility is to build my life, take care of my children, and sacrifice for them, not my parents. For parents, we just support them where and when we can, but they aren't our responsibility. I as well don't expect that my children will sacrifice for me because I'm sacrificing everything for them. That time, they'll have their own responsibilities to sacrifice for, and I'll not be one of them. We really need God's wisdom on how to set healthy boundaries for our parents, not forgetting to be compassionate at the same time.
@@miriamken3571 I disagree! Reciprocal is the nature of love! If they took care of you.... **Exodus 20:12:** "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you."
