Raised Garden Beds w/t Anne of All Trades: made from 55 Gallon Steel Drums, beginner welder/gardener

  • Learning to weld isn't hard. Unless you're an uncoordinated klutz like me. I have some plans that will require me to learn structural welding. To practice some newfound skills I decided to take a different approach to building some simple raised garden beds by utilizing inexpensive used steel drums. But since I also know nothing about gardening I reached out to fellow TH-camr and woodworker "Anne of All Trades" for her advice on growing some fruits and vegetables.

    Really love your channel! Just discovered it today and trying to catch up! Please don’t view me as a troll for this, but I can’t “not” mention it to be sure viewers understand the serious hazard! Over the course of a 41 year long career as a certified welder, I knew 3 guys who were gravely injured, and 1 who lost his life, cutting 55 gallon drums. 2 of them were using torches, 1 a plasma cutter, and the last a cutoff disc on a grinder. Skin grafts from severe burns, a plethora of shattered bones, horrible lacerations, and a blown off testicle were just some of the horrors that these three suffered, and they were the lucky ones! In one case, the drum was being cut in a massive shop that could hold 2 big dump trucks with the beds in the fully lifted position, and it blew out every window in the building, shot one end of the drum over 200’ out the door before it hit the ground, and blew the guy 50’ away! Don’t take chances! We want all of you guys to live! It only takes one time to change everything!

      @@wortheffort You did a great job of explaining the safeguards you took! Just wanted to give some real world instances to get the point across! The drum that blew up in the dump truck shop had contained car wash soap. Harmless enough, right? WRONG! Turns out there’s methanol in the soap to keep it from freezing in cold weather! If he’d taken the precautions you did, his situation would have gone incident free! Inexpensive metalworking equipment has made it possible for thousands of people with no prior experience to enjoy metalwork! That’s great, but it’s also exposed those same thousands to hazards that they’ve never thought of! Channels like yours influence people to spread their wings and try new things. The world needs a lot more of that, but with that comes the responsibility to make sure they know the result of not following safety protocols on something like this could result in major personal and property damage! Now I’m going to catch up on your vids! Stay well, and thanks for a great channel!

    It looks like a brilliant start and asking for help is always a great idea... gardeners are normally very happy to spread their knowledge..... if they aren't, they probably do fruit or flowers growing compayititions! Labeling everything is also a fantastic idea, but I'm not sure how long the blue tape will last. You can buy wooden (and plastic...... preferably recyclable) name tags that you can staple to your beds. Keep up the good work 😊👍

    Footnote for folks in warmer climates. Steel planting beds can get pretty hot in the summer, and can overheat a plant's roots. Happened to a buddy of mine here. If you're in a hot climate, use wood.

    Glad your expanding your “tools” learning welding it will add tons of opportunities. As far as the barrels go, if you weld your leg base first to the height you desire for a garden, you could just cut barrel in half, weld them to leg structure. Then lay a 2x4 or 2x6 screwed on top to make a ledge to protect from getting cut from end of barrel. Hope this helps.

    This is like watching an "out of body experience" for me. I mostly waste wood but do dabble in other mediums. I have a Mig welder and have in the past thought that a plasma cutter could be handy. It is good to drill holes in the bottom surfaces of the lower stretchers (preferably one near each end) for yet another reason: to release water. How is water getting in there? - you ma ask. From my experience (and I've seen these holes in professionally made stuff) it works like this: on a sunny day the stretcher gets hot, the air in it expands and is released through any tiny hole in the joints. In the evening the stretcher cools down and sucks moist air in. At night the stretcher cools down further and the moisture condensates. For what it's worth, the process doesn't seem to be symmetrical and the water stays in the structure.

    @ 4:07... In the UK we call that tool a Mattock. Even in its more usual agricultural environment it has never been known as a subtle tool. Any chance you could cut to your whiteboard and explain how you calculated the angles, Newtons of force and impact points to remove that bung?

    Get rid of the carpenter hammer when doing metal work. Use a good hammer designed for metal working. Carpenter hammers aren’t hardened enough for pounding on steel/iron and won’t stand up to the gaff.

    Hey brother, clean the rust off the metal where you're welding with grinder first. You need to weld clean metal, not rust. DO NOT spray anti-splatter on the metal that you're welding. It will act as Anti-Weld as well as Anti-Splatter. Anti-Splatter isn't necessary to weld, but if you're going to use it, spray it on the table first, that is what you're trying to keep the dingle-berries from building up on over the long haul. You are a master at the lathe my friend, but you are a pure disaster with metal. 🤦‍♂️
    I still love ya, 😁 but you're killing me here! 🤷‍♂️

    • @wortheffort
      @wortheffort  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was told with flux core to spray the metal. The arc will burn it off but flux splatters around the weld.... but, like woodworking everybody has different techniques.

    • @toolchuck
      @toolchuck 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wortheffort Yes, technically the right flux core can work burn through some nasty crud, but remember, you are new to this, you need to do as you teach with turning, learn the basics. You really suck at this, and I want to help you as you have helped so many others. I have worked with some very skilled craftsmen that just weren't good teachers. But then again, I have been taught by a good teacher or two that weren't particularly good students as well.
      So, let's give it a go.
      You don't dip your nozzle into the gel until you warm up the tip. You don't need nozzle gel to weld, so don't worry about it, wait until your nozzle is warm or hot. Otherwise, you just get a slug of gel up inside the nozzle that will heat up and drip all over your welds, which can cause trouble with the welds at worse, or just a waste gel. If the nozzle is warm or hot when dipped, it just melts it, then it leaves a thin coating, which is what you want. Dip the nozzle periodically, just a quick dip does the trick, and a dip when you're finished to start off the next time you weld. Also ground directly to your work not the table, always a good practice regardless of your experience. Grind the work area through the rust and crud to bright metal where you attach the ground and where you will be welding. 80-Grit Steel Demon Grinding and Polishing Flapper Disc works great in a 4 1/2" peanut grinder. Preparation is of the utmost importance in all crafts and in welding it is no different.
      Recap;
      Grind to bright metal everywhere you will be welding and grounding.
      Ground to the work not the table.
      Spray the table not the work.
      Dip the nozzle when warm/hot not cold.
      Gods Speed my friend!
