  • 💥 ALL MY GEAR AND FREE RESOURCES HERE: 💥dobsonianpower... Live EAA observing session where i show a good and simple trick using Sharpcap FWHM to override the star trails / elongated stars in the image. This is with my 12" f/5 dobsonian telescope on an equatorial platform but can be used with other set up.

Excellent tip! I recently added thr EZ GoTo and the ASI294MC to my 10 inch dob and I'm now wading through Sharpcap waters. I've been impatiently raising my FWHM, but after seeing this, I will lower it and be more patient. I am curious now about doing something similar with the brightness filter. Thank you!

I use it always except on super faint highly magnified objects. The brightness filter is more to AP, to avoid thin clouds to mess the capture. I don't use it though, to live stack.

Thank you for this Tiago! As someone starting out in EAA I was not having success with nebula images. I could not figure out how to get SharpCap to show the redish coloration. After watching this - I hope tonight will be clear skies - so I can go out and follow your steps with the Eagle Nebula. My wife and I looked at it in our 10" Dob last night. But of course it appeared as a grey object in the sky visually. So it will be totally awesome if we can see it with the resolution which you provide in your instructions. Very Excited!!!! Thanks! :-]

yes Jacinto. A nice equatorial platform is a game changer with a dobsonian.

A very good use for the FWHM filter. I wonder what you could do with the brightness filter?

    • @DobsonianPower

Good point. The brightness filter is centered on issues related with thin cloud so may be we can benefit in those situations. I guess we have to try it and check :)

For what purpose is designed FWHM control, and what are representing F,W,H,M letters ?
un I found: "The idea of FWHM filter is to exclude frames from the stack that are of lower quality (higher FWHM) to improve the stack. Basically, set the level so that most frames (90%+) have an FWHM lower than the set value and therefore get included in the stack and a small fraction have a higher value and get excluded."
"Which Focus Tool Should Be Used?
For a single-star (or sparse) field use either FWHM or Bahtinov Mask."

Full Width Half MAximum - measures the width of the stars. It's all in the video
