I work for a local trucking company and use a Webasto heater like this while on the road (the diesel version of course). We have several decommissioned trucks with these heaters in them, the owner has given me permission to take what I need and so I will be salvaging a unit to use in our RV, all that will be needed is a small diesel fuel tank.
I use a 12 gallon portable marine tank, and have it locked down in one of my storage bays. Works amazing, could not travel south this winter, and kept my class C warm down past -40 this winter.
Hi Brian. Just wanted to let you know. I did a van conversion last year for a friend, and she has the same heater as you do. She recently had a problem that her heater wouldn’t start. She took it to a dealer, and they determined that creosote formed in the exhaust. They blew it out with air, and it took right off. Your exhaust is longer than hers , so you might experience a like problem. It may be because she runs it on low a lot. She lives in her van full time and runs it quite often. Great video, Thank You ,
Thanks, I purchased a Webasto 2000 STC and also could not be happier. It works like a charm. Thank you also for posting a local supplier as the genuine Webasto (gasoline) heater is very hard to find. A fellow 🇨🇦 did recommend a supplier in Russia that I got mine from (heaters4you) - at less the half cost of what I could source one in the US or Canada. It took 2 months to arrive via Russia Post/Canada Post with tracking. It was 1 month in Russia and 1 month in Canada as Russia Post has tracking like Fedex you can see every step along its travels😅. Only caveat about Russian Webasto is there is no North American warranty. I wrapped my whole fuel pump with 1/4 neoprene foam insulation and a couple of zip ties that also takes care of the fuel pump ticking. I have only 60 days experience so far, but unlike my old VW gas heaters from the past this heater just works.
11:22 I've always thought that the heat coming out of the exhaust pipe is wasted heat that could be used by using a heat exchanger to heat the tank of grays or the water in the engine block. Starting a cold combustion engine suffers a lot. Thanks for the video and excuse my English I'm using the google translator A hug
Anything can be accomplished with enough time and money yet these heaters are very efficient and the exhaust may be hot yet... has little volume. BTW, Webasto and Espar make heater models intended to both provide hot air AND circulate warm fluid throughout your RV and engine. Perhaps that would be worth looking into.
I put the same one in my fifth wheel about three months ago. It is absolutely outstanding. I put it in because I saw your video. It is a game changer saving a lot of money and buying propane for the inefficient RV furnace that comes with RVs these days. I paid about $1100 which is a lot of money for a little dinky heater. However this thing rocks.
Good review Tito. I think you should leave your existing heater intact as a backup in case the Webasto fails. In fact a couple of backups would be wise. Something like a wave heater as well.
Thanks for the update. I'm going to put one in our Chinook to replace the Suburban that doesn't work and we wouldn't use anyway because of the noise, battery drain and inconsistent heating. I would reconsider taking out your propane heater if you already have it installed. It doesn't hurt to have a backup . We have a catalytic heater for a backup that works for our tiny rig. Happy Trails.
Great video as usual. I’m surprised that that your install kit didn’t come with the rubber mount for the fuel pump. My Espar D4, Webasto 2000 and my 5kw Chinese diesel heaters all came with the rubber mount for the fuel pump. It really does make a difference when you isolate the fuel pump from the metal frame. I love all 3 of my diesel air heaters in our class A. It’s nice dry heat. No more wet windows using a propane heater. Diesel or gas air heaters are a great upgrade for rv’s. Happy travels
The fan blowing with no heat is a nice feature. Wonder if you were really in a winter climate how it would do? It sure is clean looking if you haven't even opened it for 6 months during your test. Impressive. Your foam addition to stop the ticking/clunking is a win.
Great video - we installed a couple of the cheaper Diesel heaters and they have also worked great! We were amazed at how little power they use for the amount of heat they generate. Keep up the good work!
I run an Espar(Eberspacher)Diesel heater on my boat. When I was considering having a fuel burning appliance on my boat, Russian or Chinese products were not even a consideration. Webasto and Espar are super, well designed and manufactured units you can leave running when you fall asleep.

If there has been any major changes since the 6 month review; maybe do a year review. Thanks for all the info and saving people time from searching to find parts.
I purchased the same unit to heat my E-350 high roof conversion here in Alaska. Haven’t installed it yet but knowing that it’s heating your RV it should have no issues warming my much smaller space in subzero temps.
Going to use this on my fifth wheel toy hauler after I sell my class C, it’s perfect. propane for showers and cooking, gas for heating, electricity for everything else.
Tip: Affix the air filter to the backside of your return air grill with a couple of bungee cords. You can cut the air filter down in size to make it fit the grill opening.
This is great, a solution to my heater problem. the original LP heater stopped working and i had the dealer fix it under warranty, then it went out right before our Texas freeze. That sucked. I was looking at these before but could never find one that ran off of gas. My LP furnace when working is such a gas hog. This seems like a good solution. FYI working on my solar i did get the 2 of the 100amp lioncore Batteries waiting for a sale to get the third. just got a Victron DC to DC charger so i can charge the house batteries off the Alternator. Love the channel keep it up.
Good luck with the solar project. Check out the company (in virginia) I listed in the description. Last I checked they had some gas versions labeled as a Sprinter gas package or something.
U rock! Thank you for ur insights and and time involved helping us. I have a Chinese version of this and live in my shortie 3 nights a week while at work here in Minnesota.....it was -2 below last night and worked flawlessly. Thanks again.
We used a similar system to your Webasto - Espar or Eberspracher - while living on our boat, altho' it used diesel fuel. There's much to recommend the dry heat but both brands have historically had issues with their control boards, and that is the central nervous system of the entire installation. In Europe, both brands' diesel fuel versions are commonly installed in recreational boats and commercial trucks and seem to work reliably provided there's adequate DC voltage being supplied. Low voltage is the achilles heel as they can misfire on start up. Brian, given the 'utility company' on your roof and the more benign conditions your RV experiences, you'll probably find this quite reliable.
5 month this winter here in north Europe i also use heater cheap Chinese and its working good not so advance but have a remote control I can use when I'm in my bed
I like that heater and I’d remove the noisy suburban propane heater too. Wish more campers came with it. So many off grid people use it with a good lithium set up. If space was not an issue I may keep propane heat as a back up and keep propane for the stove because I like cooking with gas. Although I am not familiar with induction cooking. If I needed the space I’d ditch propane all together. Make more space for lithium batteries. Nice review 👍🏼
Consider a separate “day tank” to run the heater from, or a high pickup on your fuel tank so you don’t discover your tank is empty after spending a few weeks in the outback.
Nice idea but he used his generator line to supply the fuel and the generator pick up is usually higher in the tank than the regular fuel pick up for the engine so the problem was already solved.
Thanks for the update Brian. I have the same unit only with the manual dial in my class b. Your digital dial may be on the upgrade list. Never considered anything else. Worth the extra $$ for the German engineering and peace of mind. Definitely a game changer. Enjoy your adventure!
Hi Brian! Thank’s a lot for your vidéos! I use a 2000 stc with the altitude kit. Had the oportunity to test it lastly in the french alps and close to the sea. I am wondering if the webasto drys air? Have you noticed any isue with hygrométry in you campingcar after 6 month using it?
No issues with moisture yet. We've mostly been in dry climates so it's hard to measure. I'll be curious how well this does as we move up in elevation soon. We'll see.
Don’t know if I’m repeating... Build a small frame or use sheet metal clips on the back of that vent door and attach your filter to that. All of the air will then go through the filter.
I’ve had a Camco wave 3 in my van for 1.5 years and I’ve had zero problems. I do always have my fan and windows open do condensation isn’t a big problem. Except during 30 degree weather, which here in California has happened a few times this year, then there’s condensation on but only on sliding door and windshield. I really can’t justify the cost when I only use a heater 3-4 months out of the year and it’s never a constant. Then it get stored until the next year.
The cool thing (pun intended) about an electric blanket for me is, because of my bedroom being cold, on purpose, it'll warm up my flannel sheets and pillow to the perfect, "AAAhhhhhhh..." temperature that helps me drop off to sleep quicker.
That’s great Brian! I’ve wanted to do the same project, but my control panel is in the center of the trailer, and the wire routing has intimidated me to date. Perhaps I could just put a switch on the interior side of the exterior wall. When I see rigs with that light strip, I always think it would be great to add one to mine. Cheers!
Be sure to understand the difference between the Euro version (like I have) and the US version. Their different. Check out the US supplier I have listed in the description. They've got some good info.
Super helpful. I have a new van conversion that came with this heater. Love it! I was trying to find out if it is normal for the fan to be running all the time and why. Nobody had an answer, so thanks. But I’m still not clear why the fan runs when it’s not heating? Especially since it’s circulating cool air? Love the padding to prevent the clicks! I’ll do that this summer. Thanks a ton
The fan runs to pull air in to sample the temperature for the thermostat. Also, there's a better rubber mount available now very similar to this one amzn.to/3JsqxkB that works great as a shock mount for the pump.
Hey Tito, great update. Quick question. Once your temperature is achieved, does the low fan stay on? I guess I am used to my home where once temp is reached, heater cools and shuts off.
Yes. The heater uses air from the intake to sense the temperature for the thermostat. So the fan continuously pulls in a tiny bit of air to measure the temperature.
@@RVwithTito good to know. And any reason why the termostat overheats by multiple degrees before stopping the flow of fuel? I have the new 3.0 thermostat.
I was inspired by the first install review. I removed my propane heater and replaced it with one from eberspecker. I am really pleased with it. But I wish that I had thought to build a shelf for it that removed with the old propane version cover. That way I could disconnect electrical and gas then pull the whole thing out for service attached to the old heater door. I did use the old intake and exhaust port's with connections from a boating supply. I wish I used the water version that heats both the interior and hot water as well as heat the motor block. Witch would also use the motor block to heat when the motor was running. Complicated though?
I am getting a sense that you are full timing it. Must be a bit difficult to do many improvement projects without the workshop you left behind. Maybe a cargo trailer outfitted with a mobile workshop would be the ticket? Thanks for the great videos......ever consider a DC fridge?
Sort of. Not full-timing but definitely on the road for a few months. Yes. You're correct. No major projects for now, but putting all of my recent upgrades to the test. Definitely missing the tools.
Brian, I enjoyed this video as I have enjoyed your others. Very informative. I may see if the Webasto will work on my daughter's 1966 Porsche 912 to help heat it. I know your about efficiency and practicality and I was wondering if you were going to do a show on the lifespan of those denim shorts. I'm sure you've got your money out of them, since you've likely warn them since I met you in 1995. Send me an address for fan mail with your waste size and I'll ship a pair of 5.11 short in your choice of color. Love you brother. Better than I deserve, Lee
Excellent review. Just wondering though. You said you were going to remove your propane furnace. Will you be attaching this gas heater to the rest of your vents. I imagine your basement is heated by the furnace? Will this gas heater be able to take care of all that?
I live where it's 40 below Ihave one diesel heater in a 30 foot class A motorhome with one. Duct and it stays warm all winter and also keeps my water supply from freezing have 2 80 gals water tanks it works
1. Your comfort zone temperatures for nighttime and daytime is too cold for us. I would need to see how it works for higher temperature range. 2. If you delete the propane heater could you use the basement ducts for the new gas heater to flow through?
1. You could certainly set it higher, that's just where we like it. 2. I'm already using one of the ducts used by the old heater. The other ducts I've temporarily sealed off.
Hi Brian, It was a nice video on Webasto diesel heater. I have one question is that, does it requires ventilation to cool the heater? Because you have installed the heater in a closed area, where there is no ventilation.
The space isn't totally closed off. The panel where the intake is is open. Plus the heater kind of cools itself but constantly running air through. Even when you turn it off it runs the fan for a few minutes to cool itself down. So far it's been fine.
Great video you have really tricked this rig out to the max! Time to start thinking about a new Rig with new projects ! Love the channel great explanations clear consise and technical I have the same rv your like a project to do list! Have you swapped the propane fridge yet?
What’s the coldest temp you have been in? Do you feel the 2000 is adequate for your size rv or do you wish went to a 40 or 55 size? Looking to install in a truck camper that’s used in below freezing temps
Nice upload Tito! I'm trying to decide whether to put my battery bank and electrical systems under the twin bed near the Wabasto (driver side), or under the other twin bed on the passenger side. Obviously, it would be easier to get my #4 wires from battery to Orion 12-12 charger on the driver side, but my concern is that the Wabasto output will put out too much heat under the bed where all the systems are. What insulation did you use? I see that there is a product called " Wabasto theroduct insulation". Do you feel like the compartment would be too hot for electrical systems in the winter when it's running all the time?
I have two of them only one is in the RV only need one I thought I would need two but. I only needed one it's a cheaply but it works quite well no issues
Tito, you have not covered heater operation at altitude (>5,000 ft). I think you’ll find that with prolonged use of the petrol version at altitude, you will coke the combustion chamber without calibration. Perhaps you will return to Washington through Nevada on a leisurely route and be able to give an update?
Do you have an idea of how much air your getting through your ducting. I am thinking about putting 2 in my 40 ft solitude and I am trying to figure out if I could just make a mounting point where the current propane furnace is and use the existing ductwork which I have already upgraded to rigid ducting.
You'd probably want one of the larger models. The size I have is the smallest and will support 1 to 2 ducts. The most direct line out of the heater will get the most air flow.
My factory installed webasto in my VW transporter the webasto wont run if the fuel level is on the reserve. Does this work the same way? You could run out of fuel if you're unlucky?
Do you think it would work to install this heater to blow the hot air through the existing furnace ducting? Or would the fan not be powerful enough? Most of the installations I've seen seem to have very short hot air outlet runs so maybe there is a good reason for that.
The model I have works find for two ducts. One is from the original LP. I wouldn't use it for more than that. The airflow would be pretty low. I'd go with a larger model. I stuck with the smaller model to be more efficient. Seems to be working for our rig.
i want to ask do you leave it on 24/7? and you have had it on for months like that? so i assume it cycles on and off just like a house furnace would? it starts up and shuts down on its own? the thermostat was extra i think you said in the install video? my truck is diesel and i assume that it will work just as your does with gas? on and off and with the thermostat?
@@RVwithTito so guess we can say that is makes life in the boonies comfortable off grid. that takes a load off my mind. all for about 60 bucks a month. running at like 60% duty cycle
I have a couple of cheapy heaters and they run 24/7 as well I live in Quebec the only thing is the bearings, run out of grease they r copies all the parts fit the wabato Chinese heaters have bearing issues start to make noise and have to repack bearings I have 2 of them running on deasel but I'm told one can get ones that runs on gas or propane After u repack bearings I will run for ever no noise is pretty good
I have a cheap Chinese one to heat my shop. The build quality it terrible and I had to make several repairs and modifications, but it does heat well when running.
I'm trying to figure out how to power this thing. I'm installing it and don't know how to connect it properly without messing up my car. I'm assuming I just connect it to the battery? And if so, how?
You can use any 12V source for power. I don't think it draws more than 6A when initially firing up, then it drops to about 2A. So a 10A circuit would work.
Brian, do you know if the petrol (gas) version can be mounted sideways 90 degrees on the horizontal axis? I have a perfect spot for mine but it's on a side wall. Mine is not the diesel version.
I have the Chinese diesel heater. Used 2 winters sofar in New England in Class C full-time. Only problems i had was i had to replace the fan, glow plug came loose and the LCD controller is very fragile. But they are only $20 so I keep a spare. And also a spare glow plug and fuel pump also $20. Brian don't remove the LP heater system. You should always have a backup. Especially in colder climates. My LP system happens to heat the underbelly compartments and waste tanks. So it's a necessity. Also you can buy 10 China heaters for 1 Wabasto. Infact you can buy a China heater for the price of the Wabasto exhaust pipe. But a gas heater is not available from China. I probably wouldn't trust it anyway. Diesel safer .
Can this unit run from a separate gasoline tank? Like from a mower or similar. We have a sprinter diesel, but don’t want to tap into what could be a nightmare.

Nope no rubber mount on mine. This workaround has worked great though.
Your work around might even be better than the rubber mount. You have completely isolated the pump from the metal frame. Great job
The American heaters come with the rubber mount, the European versions do not.

Nice video Brian, can’t wait for RV manufacturers to “discover” these heaters

The Webasto heaters are very durable. I installed the diesel version in my boat in 2014 and it has worked perfectly for the last 7 years.
Great. Good to know. The only potential issue I see is in higher elevation. I'll find out soon. No problems at sea level though :)
the information you give here clears my mind up about what i want and what i will do. great info it fully answers all my questions.
Glad to hear. Good luck with the mods!
Nice update seems super quiet and what a savings compared to the noisy propane battery killer heater 👍

Thanks. Yes. I like the digital controller.
Another great product review, Tito!! Great job!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yeah. You're right. Just trying it out for now so I didn't do it up right.
I've used an electric blanket before this. Works great. Eventually you've got to get out of bed though :)
Thanks for this! It answered every question I had
You're welcome 👍
Thank you for the great update. Congrats on your channel and always expecting you videos.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching.
Cheers!
Thanks for the update ! Getting closer to getting one.
Very informative. Thank you for posting
Glad it was helpful!
We love it too. Game changer! Haven't had any issues, even at 5-6K ft of altitude.
THANKS FOR THE UPDATE
No problem
Hey Lee! These aren't the jorts from '95. I retired those last year. These are newer :)
Thanks.
You're welcome!
8:20 fixing the noise of the heater fuel pump.
Thank you for the Update Brian!
30's isnt cold. Thats warm in Minnesota. Lol. Im curious if it will keep ya warm in -20 degrees with a -40 windshield.
Thanks for the update and that it is working well.
Excellent review. Just wondering though. You said you were going to remove your propane furnace. Will you be attaching this gas heater to the rest of your vents. I imagine your basement is heated by the furnace? Will this gas heater be able to take care of all that?
I plan to leave it as is with these two vents. It works fine. I disconnected the other vents and have capped the basement heat many years ago.
I purchased the same heater on Amazon.
Did you show the subs how you do that? I may have missed out. Unfortunately I have a Coleman basement unit
Excellent, is there a size limit on the RV this unit would work in? Fifth wheel toy hauler or class A?
There are larger models that push more heat/air. The one I'm using is the smallest and most efficient which is why I chose it.
Thank you Brian!
You bet!
I would love to know if that Battery monitor is aftermarket or if it came stock in your motorhome
Definitely after market. Here's my install th-cam.com/video/zEycLvO1-es/w-d-xo.html
Great video Brian. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
I recently did one or these to 12vdc it was easy but a 2 person job
Great video you have really tricked this rig out to the max! Time to start thinking about a new Rig with new projects ! Love the channel great explanations clear consise and technical
I have the same rv your like a project to do list!
Have you swapped the propane fridge yet?
Haven't swapped the fridge yet. Second guessing whether I should though.
I only needed one it's a cheaply but it works quite well no issues
excellent video! thank you so much Brian
My pleasure! Glad you liked it.
Very informative, thank you.
Tito, you have not covered heater operation at altitude (>5,000 ft). I think you’ll find that with prolonged use of the petrol version at altitude, you will coke the combustion chamber without calibration. Perhaps you will return to Washington through Nevada on a leisurely route and be able to give an update?
We'll probably be at elevation in Utah within the next couple months. I'll have to flip the high altitude jumper and give it a try.
Where did you find the additional exhaust tubing ?
You can find various kinds on Amazon (amzn.to/3eEnKXe). The diameter can be slightly different, but it's pretty close.
Great video, this will be my next install
Do you have an idea of how much air your getting through your ducting. I am thinking about putting 2 in my 40 ft solitude and I am trying to figure out if I could just make a mounting point where the current propane furnace is and use the existing ductwork which I have already upgraded to rigid ducting.
You should be able to use your existing ducting.
@@rickeagle awsome thank you
You'd probably want one of the larger models.
Same. I have it hooked into the generator fuel line which will cut off under 1/4 tank.
*What model did you purchase for your Class C Motorhome?*
It is the Webasto Air Top 2000 STC (similar to this amzn.to/3zgYIqG but the gasoline version).
Can’t find the purchase option for the heater, just the parts. Link please.
Do you think it would work to install this heater to blow the hot air through the existing furnace ducting? Or would the fan not be powerful enough? Most of the installations I've seen seem to have very short hot air outlet runs so maybe there is a good reason for that.
Use your existing ducts. If needed, add a duct booster blower.
The model I have works find for two ducts. One is from the original LP. I wouldn't use it for more than that. The airflow would be pretty low. I'd go with a larger model. I stuck with the smaller model to be more efficient. Seems to be working for our rig.
Good information, nice video
Thanks. Glad you liked it.
Great review. How much was that unit please. You and yours havagudun Brian.
It was around $1400 for all the pieces.
i want to ask do you leave it on 24/7? and you have had it on for months like that? so i assume it cycles on and off just like a house furnace would? it starts up and shuts down on its own? the thermostat was extra i think you said in the install video? my truck is diesel and i assume that it will work just as your does with gas? on and off and with the thermostat?
You can also buy diesel heaters that work the same as this one. Look on Amazon. They are $150 or so with all complete parts and thermostat.
@@rickeagle Webasto for 150?
Yes. It works just like a home furnace. That's one of the cool things about it. Keeps the temp pretty well regulated.
@@RVwithTito so guess we can say that is makes life in the boonies comfortable off grid. that takes a load off my mind. all for about 60 bucks a month. running at like 60% duty cycle
Tito, are you or have you used this heater when traveling? I don’t like to use our propane heater when on the road.
I have but really have to need to since I can turn on the engine heat. It works though.
I have a couple of cheapy heaters and they run 24/7 as well I live in Quebec the only thing is the bearings, run out of grease they r copies all the parts fit the wabato
Chinese heaters have bearing issues start to make noise and have to repack bearings
I have 2 of them running on deasel but I'm told one can get ones that runs on gas or propane
After u repack bearings I will run for ever no noise is pretty good
I have a cheap Chinese one to heat my shop. The build quality it terrible and I had to make several repairs and modifications, but it does heat well when running.
@@RVwithTito they rub they wobble but they run.. once.u get out all the bugs they heat well LOL
@@garyreed354 Yeah. That pretty much sums it up :)
@@RVwithTito yup
I'm trying to figure out how to power this thing. I'm installing it and don't know how to connect it properly without messing up my car. I'm assuming I just connect it to the battery? And if so, how?
You can use any 12V source for power. I don't think it draws more than 6A when initially firing up, then it drops to about 2A. So a 10A circuit would work.
What size Wabasto heater did you install ?
Thanks Brian! Like #8
Thanks!
Brian, do you know if the petrol (gas) version can be mounted sideways 90 degrees on the horizontal axis? I have a perfect spot for mine but it's on a side wall. Mine is not the diesel version.
Not 100% sure, but I don't think so.
Awesome !
Hey Brian, have you had any issues with mounting it on the osb? Did the heat shielding your installed in the 4" cut out do the job?
So far no issues to report. Everything's holding up.
Haven't removed the LP yet, but I'm eyeing that spot for a second water tank.
Can this unit run from a separate gasoline tank? Like from a mower or similar. We have a sprinter diesel, but don’t want to tap into what could be a nightmare.
Oh sure. Lots of folks use a 5 liter fuel tank mounted somewhere.
