I rebuilt the front suspension in my Mercedes W201 and it's AWESOME!

  • In this video I rebuild the front suspension on my 1993 Mercedes 190E (W201) with new hub bearings, front and rear control arm bushings, ball joints, shocks etc.
    One very important lesson learned is that you should buy the complete control arm assembly with new bushings and ball joint instead of trying to rebuild yours if possible. I wasted a lot of time trying to remove the old bushings, clean up the control arm and press the new bushings in to save very little money.
    The work that I perform in this video is also applicable to most other Mercedes chassis from that era including the W124 and W129.

    I plan to rebuild the front suspension of my W201, it squeaks like rubber everytime I go on bumps, the left ball joint also squeak like dirty metal and the control arm bushings are starting to crack. So I'm gonna clean everything and change all the bushings, ball joint and anti-roll bushings aswell so that I can have a fresh front suspension.
    How much time did you spent on this rebuilt? (Excluding wheel bearings)

      @dosh8276 hmm the front isn't too bad... if you get the parts etc it's max a few days... for the rear I dropped the subframe so that was a bit more challenging

      I use black rust protective paint for all the parts - pretty durable

    Nice video!
    I noticed that ball joint is not correct position. Ball joint have little mark on one side and i think that must point to 90° different way (I think that mark must be point to inside the control arm).
    That ball joint have oval "hole" where that ball joint is moving. Ball joint can move so much on one direction, but if you rotate that 90°, there is not much space anymore.
    (Sorry my bad english and i hope u can understand, what i try to say. :)

    Hi i just finished doing my front wheel bearings, i put ALOT more grease on than you, can too much be bad? And how tight should the lock nut be regarding how loose the hub is when turning? Thank you loved the video

    • @ayz48
      @ayz48 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wanna know how tight it should be too. I messed up a new front barring on my 2.6 w201.
      But normally you should use all the grease that comes with the kit. 👍🏻 Rather too much than too little

      @erixx297 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If im not mistaken the big 'nut' thats screwed on adjusts the play in the bearing so you need something to measure the play (when mounted push the complete hub in and out), if its to much it can probably become loose or cause vibrations/noise if its to tight the bearings will wear our. Then there is a hex screw "inside" the nut that is torqued to spec which locks the nut in place.

      @erixx297 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A dial indicator for instance could be used to measure correct play in bearing

    Hey dude, I have a few questions for you. I have an om601 in my MB, but I wanna upgrade to 602 turbo. So firstly I need to remove 601 engine but I never have taken out a Mercedes engine. Do you have any tips and tricks up your sleeve to pass to me for removal😹😹.

    you can get a pair of rear control arm bushings and they go in as easy as a smack with a mallet. Thank me later....

      @@ETMotorsports would you know the names of the parts front and back to look for? ...I obviously am not well versed. Any help is much appreciated as I am currently in the process of a complete rebuild of my w201 ...Thanks!

      @djaygravity4501 check out pelicanparts.com and rockauto.com - you can filter by year and model and when you go to suspension you'll see the various components

    As far as I know you should NOT heat up the metal to make it easier getting the bearings out. Doing so may weaken the integrity of the metal.
