They work better with zephyr or Italian meringue buttercream, since Russian cakes are more often frosted with egg whites or whipped cream and not buttercream.

you are using the claw all wrong! It is actually a nice tip, you are supposed to hold it teeth up, and do like a shell type of back and forth movement.

I watched another video on these tips by "Montreal Confections" titled " testing Russian Piping tips- Russian Piping Tips- decorating a mini doll cake with new ruffle tips. She used "the claw" tip the other way so that the claw opening was on top and it came out kind of cute. These are very interesting tips, and look like they could be fun to use.

I think your claw is clogged or you need to put a knife in it to separate it like you some have to do with a leaf tip. I had to do that with mine.

Most of the tips work better on cakes. (Actually, they were meant for cakes only.) However, the "claw" tip is to make a ruffled shell border, so its a type of border tip. You would use it the way you would a 16,18, or 32 tip.

I have the claw tip with me, i used it for creating flowers, you make a 2.5 cm long line with claw, then do another line like you are drawing a sun flower, and you will get a beautiful flower design..
( i meant lines in the sense From the edge of the cupcake to the centre , straight-lines, it is very easy to use actually, you can also put 2 colours, so the gradient effect you will get for the flowers.
It will look like this 🌸

The "claw tip" creates an amazing, super easy decorative ribbon on the bottom of your cake, you know, that trim you see on birthday cakes and sheet cakes. I dunno if it has a technical term.

  • @rhema9339

After you are finished u are not supposed to drag the tip out so it leaves a mark, you have to leave the tip where it is and gently lift it upwards to finish icing it

Right around the 13:00 minute mark with Montreal Confections on her Ruffle Russian tips, she uses The Claw and it's.... Interesting...

    • @KristenCardinale

rinofthemill It actually is the same tip. If you pause the other video at 13:57 and compare screenshots, you can see they're the same. Ball tips aren't used in that video; the Montreal channel has a separate video for those.

if you'd move the cupcake in the hand holding it in stead of moving your piping hand you'd have a lot more ease and smoother finishes from not changing direction, where you're laying down icing at a different frequency: different pressure from stopping and starting again and different speed because you're moving a different way. Doubling back moves the center, the axis of the icing as you fall down the side of the cupcake trying to fully cover the area. Both of these can be put on the same thing, the turning hand, which is luckily a quick and easy change (:
I also noticed the lay patterns be disturbed by when you pull away, you pulling against the direction you've been laying - out and clockwise - which makes sense trying to detach from the icing but if you finish a stroke with a little push in and then a swift release up, hopefully you won't pull on your just layed design (:
Fun video, I hadn't realized there were pointy Russian piping tips!

She will probably like these if she practices and gets good with them. When used by a talented someone that has had a lot of practice with them, the results are stunning. She really should practice with these and get the hang of them before forming an opinion on them. If she could get good enough with them without being so sloppy, she would probably really like them. I know a few people that are really good with these (Russians, mostly) and it seems for this style of decorating, it is a totally different style and technique. Russians definitely have different aesthetics and style, so keep that in mind when learning how to use these well.
If it looks sloppy at first, don't decide it looks bad so the tips suck or think it's not something you can be good at. I suggest watching people who have learned with and have always worked with these tips and in this style.
This lady is really good with the Russian tips and I assure you am in no way affiliated with this person nor am I attempting to promote her. I'm only posting it as an example of great technique and beautiful results.
Russian cakes look completely different from Western style cakes. I love the Russian aesthetic and would love to see it used more in the Western countries.
Just keep practicing! You can get gorgeous results with these and your cakes would be very unique and stand out from the others. I like to do calligraphy. I'm fairly good at most of the common, traditional fonts that you see used in English language. I know the technique and have practiced for years to get good at the technique used in writing most common English fonts and styles used to write the Latin alphabet that Westerners use.
If I would want to learn to do Chinese calligraphy or Arabic, Thai, Korean, Georgian, Hebrew, Hindi, any of those- I would have to totally retrain myself and learn a whole new technique. It is like starting from scratch. It does not even matter that I am good at Latin alphabet calligraphy because the techniques are so so different.
I'm just saying- Don't get discouraged if you don't get the hang of it right away! Keep practicing because it is so satisfying when you finally are capable of doing it brilliantly! Sorry that was so long!

These remind me a lot of the Stilton nozzles/tips that you would use to create flowers petal by petal... I wonder if you would be interested in trying to use them that way instead of doing a steady stream of frosting each time? I THINK one of the stilton examples I'm thinking of is a 127? It would be used to make like a nice 5 petal flower on a flower nail or something like that... just an idea!

I think that "the Claw" is for decorating the outside of a cake, just do a line around the whole thing and then with a flat tip do a line in that empty space

hope you see my comment. just a little info. I dont think these tips are the best to use on cupcakes. They work much better to use as a boarder on a cake. You should make a video using these tips for a cake! Love your videos!!!!

7:40 you hold the tip at the center of the cupcake, just above, and you squeeze out frosting while turning your wrist side to side.

When using "the claw" maybe you could position the tip with the teeth up and do like a upward shell border movement

  • @simonetasleemali4937

maybe the tips aren't meant for just cupcakes, but for borders on bigger cakes too. but always feel free to use your talent and imagination in creating:)

Put the "claw" piping tip in the centre of a cupcake (slightly above it) and twist the bag.. try doing that.. maybe it works?

The claw tip is for grass design. The small squiggle is for leaves.

really hoping to get a reply (I'd have messaged if the option was available lol) I am an avid fan and love your recipes. Your buttercream recipe is my go to and I was hoping you could help me work out how much I would need (how many batches that is) to frost 48 cupcakes and a three layer 8" cake? Thank you in advance if you see this x

The Claw might be for a decorative edge of a cake or corner of the cupcake.
