as someone who is finishing up their education to become a car mechanic, i can say that you are so far doing a great job fixing that van. i cant see anything that you have done wrong. however, if you havent already, i would suggest for you guys to inspect the suspension. as its often neglected by owners and can vastly improve both the ride quality and reduce the risk you lose control of it while driving.
To be fair, it is hard to tear out old upholstery and a bench wrong. They haven't done anything mechanical yet, so not messing it up is not difficult to really do.
If ur becoming a mechanic u shoulda told him it was a big mistake to buy a 40 yr old Volkswagen the rubber and seals are probably all cracking I doubt you'd be able drive tht thing very far before something goes wrong

Naturally aspirated EJ is great choice for engine swap IMO. These engines are bulletproof. Keep in mind that they have almost the same parts like performance turbo variants which push over twice horsepower without reliability issues (except for ej25 for american market, these things blow head gaskets like crazy).

Heey, nice ride Barry! I have a couple of suggestions if you want: 1) Those wires are really dodgy and I suggest replacing them. 2) Those old school headlights are incredibly inefficient and I suggest replacing them with LED lights. 3) Get a car battery or preferably, li-on pack. It's pretty evident why. Also, make a 12 output CLOSE to the battery. Stepping up the voltage to 220 and then down to 12 is just wasting power. Make sure that the batteries are water-proof and in a safe place and don't leave out the protection circuit. It's a must. 4) Get a solar panel and mount it on the roof. It will definitely make your life easier. If you do decide to do these things and need a bit of advice, I'll gladly help! There are also great forums worth checking out. Just google em'. Congrats on the new car! Stay safe, stay healthy and best of wishes!
these vans are indeed worth alot when rebuilt, not rebuilting with parts that match the originals will lower that a bit, but not much. eitherway, old stuff like this can cost a fortune to rebuild yourself. but you were buying it to travel in, not rebuild and sell, so amazing purchase
That is arguably THE BEST Subaru engine ever built. Nice score! Just keep an eye on the oil and make sure to change out the filters/fluids on a regular basis, and that thing will last forevea! Also, I live in southern Oregon and have a 1982 Subaru BRAT (mini truck with rear facing seats). We should adventure sometime ✌🏼

Barry, this is VERY important. Make SURE you replace the Head Gaskets on that subaru engine. 90k is where they start to go bad and you do not want to blow one before you go on your trip. Good luck, keeo us posted, and have fun living the dream my friend.
I wish you all success possible. Especially with rear engined, boxer powered vehicle (you can always trick people that you have some classic Porsche). I just want to add: I love EJ engines. I really love them. My current car is slow af '05 Impreza Wagon but this car is so much fun. It sounds great, it is extremely smooth for 15 years old car. Also combination of wide tires, low center of gravity and short wheelbase makes it great on the track.
Now thats a pice of work. The thing with the 2.2L Subaru engine is true. The first thing you show about the engine 3:40 is an AC line. Its not necessery and only comes into play when you wanna swap in Air Conditioning. This is a is project you can learn quite something from about cars I belive. Defenetly get the engine oil changed, never hurts. And you gotta be carefull about the transmission. Its likely the stock one. Wich is set up for a 1.6 maybe 1.7L engine from 1982 wich is gonna be considerably less powerfull then a modern 2.2L. Meaning that even if you get the transmission fixed, it may break again in the future. Good Luck!
The switch is most likely used as a kill switch. People put them on older cars etc that can be stolen easily especially hondas, the switch is hidden somewhere so the thief won't know where to look for it. I recommend you keep it provided the wiring is good.
Me and my dad are currently working on a 1988 one (T3 (Transporter Genaration3) as theyre called in Germany), but the all wheel drive syncro version with 3 locking diffs, running and all and should be done in about 2 to 3 weeks, really excited for it. If youve got any questions about the Vanagon, me and my dad own 3 of them and the second one is getting fixed soon too, you can contact me, especially when it comes to spare parts, we´ve got some and here in Germany theres lots of people specifying in T3´s (Vanagons) so idk just reply to this comment and we could get in touch if you have some questions or need some parts or something. Ik this comes kinda weird but maybe I can help, maybe it isnt needed at all but i mean, offering it doesnt hurt haha.
And one tip already, please please please check if theres rust in the wheel housing in the front. Right above the front wheels the seat belts connect to the chassis and on Vanagons its a 90% chance that in those spots it has rusted through. If youre getting into and accident then the seatbelts will just rip out if the car and youre probability of survival just diminished. If those two spots (Drivers and passengers side) havent been fixed in the past (basically by adding new steel plating for the seat belt to connect to) they´re probably rusted through so I´d gighly reccomend taking a look at it. Just grab a screwdriver and punch in those places from the bottom up, i´ve seen screwdrivers go into the cabin through there, just check it out and make sure there isnt any rust because that could be really dangerous
Looks like a fun project. I was going to suggest an EJ swap if it had the original engine. Those pipes with nothing on them are for the emissions stuff from the Subaru it came out of, as long as the other end isn't hooked to the intake manifold, they are fine left alone. If you have the need for a retired mechanic in Medford, I usually have free time to lend some advice/ a hand.

Between high mileage, janky wiring and an off-the-wall engine swap, this has to be the most expensive way to get into vans.
