Earlier busses are hard to find nowadays, so the next best thing is a vanagon, i drove a friend's vanagon ang loved it, i like the rack and pinion steering on it

I bought mine not running, but got it going in about a week and have been driving it ever since… they are a bit temperamental, but too difficult to figure out!
Had a high top westy for 8 years imported into the UK from Germany, wasn’t air cooled but a turbo diesel.You won’t find a better van to camp in we absolutely loved her.

That Type IV aircooled engine didn't look like it had any leaks at all. That alone is impressive. Perhaps it was taken care of very well. The frame underneath seemed quite clean too. Not a lot of rust, and it is only surface rust. I little wire brushing, and some new undercoating, and it will be really nice.

I have a years college tuition in mine and I still havent finished the rust repair! But Betsy is one sweet ride! Me and the old girl have been together 42 years, My marriage only lasted 1/4 of that! (Hey Alice!) I have done so many upgrades in the last 7 years I cant even remember them all! Im with you Gary, I wouldnt mess with those water boxers! I wouldnt mind a little more power, but I wouldnt trade her for anything! So I dont know what all the skepticism is all about, but I would own that old girl in a heartbeat , if i wasnt hitched to Betsy!! You did good Matt Jackson, and good job pulling the trigger Jake!! Hey there is a clean Early bay on the side of the road at a house on the back road drive from Austin to Fredricksville. house right off the 290. I cant remember exactly where. but it looked like it was sitting for a while. Somewhere just before or after Johnson city. I cant remember exactly. but You can see it in the driveway clear from the road. Nice one to go save....
@@VWLifeVW it is a good conversion as long as you got all the plumbing but it bolts right in. I have built a few regeared tranys for them and the ford conersions.
Nice with original wheels even. I was worried this was my old '80 but doesn't look like it. Phew. I spent way too much time fixing all those fuel lines, injectors and ball joints for it to end up as a derelict. WARNING! It is freaking slow. Handled great though.
Awesome my dad in early 90s had 3 of these. Brown n blue ones.. I remember taking us camping in it.. he sold the brown one for 15k in 1994. I wonder how much there now ?

Vanagons were air cooled from 1980 to mid 1983. I have a weird theory, never proven, but I think the water boxer motor wasn't ready when they first brought out the Vanagon, so they kept the Type 4 2 liter for a few years. SOmebody probably knows all of that for sure.
Looks like a really clean Vanagon , I know what it’s like to play driveway Tetris. Like I tell my Wife, they don’t make’m anymore, of coarse She just rolls her eyes at me (I think that’s bad, ? )

I had a 81 westy for years I like it and I just finished a engine build for another 81 for a customer man they sure are costly to build right.

So my vw bus has gas in the oil. Is the motor shot, or could I drain the oil?
Do you have an electric fuel pump? You can drain the oil and you should be good
