I literally just quit this job and I’m gonna say *allegedly* for safety butttt :
I was a manager for about 7 months and this is the most high stress low reward company I’ve ever worked for. I was physically assaulted by customers more than once and corporate did absolutely nothing. We had no security of any kind. We had a broken gate ( that was allegedly broken since mid 2010 ) that I had to fight with them to pay $1000 to fix. I could keep going but it’s honestly traumatizing to think about. In all if you love their products they honestly aren’t that good for you ( literally read the labels they aren’t clean at alll ) and the company is shady as hell. I quit because it caused me to have mental breakdown.
    - also they never speak about the MLM in store at least in nyc, you are taught that it is strictly in the UK which is a lie, but they are completely separate entities as far as the US and their stores.
They also close stores on their employees with two weeks notice and *allegedly* make them clean out the store if the employees want to move to a new location/get their severance pay.

This one makes me so upset. I love the body shop! Here in Canada, they're stand-alone stores in almost every big mall, and their products are some of the only ones that don't cause my eczema flair up. They could be (and are) so successful as a brick and mortar retail store, I don't knit WHY they still have the mlm side.

They've only been an MLM in Canada since 2020, they had MLM branches in the UK and Australia for decades though. So a lot of people just assume they're a legit business and that side clearly is successful. But of course they make a lot of money quickly setting up a pyramid scheme, especially as they opened the MLM in the US and Canada just before covid and the huge spike in predators drooling over vulnerable scared people

I would literally have nightmares of being late because one time I was 1 MINUTE LATE meaning that I was on the floor one minute late, and the manager would write Me up. I was called disrespectful for standing up for myself after my assistant manager attacked me and made fun of my religion. I am an Aussie and the first time I heard about the mlm side was in 2013, never knew it existed before (we have stores everywhere though). A colleague from work became a distributor and it was her first party. I already hated mlms, but felt I should go to "support" her. I did warn her I wasnt planning on buying anything, as my wedding was coming up and money was tight...she completely understood. After the party finished, the buying part came up and there was a body spray I liked, so I decided to get it. Well, her upline lady was so rude that I was only purchasing one small item! She said this was my friends first party and I should support her more and in my head I'm thinking...this is why I dont go to these parties! Thankfully my friend was fine with it and explained my situation, but the lady's face did not like it one bit. Needless to say, I haven't been to another one and haven't heard of the mlm side of it since. I am shocked there is still an mlm side though, because it is easier to purchase online or in store.
I do love their hemp handcream. I have tried a lot of different handcreams, and none have ever matched how well this one works...but I buy it in store or online as needed, which is also rare.

I have unfortunately been caught up in this MLM before and they work the same way as 'parties'. It is so easy to get sucked into this and I know many friends who are body shop 'consultants'. Its conducted over facebook and you can get stuck. I once purchased the 'starter kit' which was about £50 which I then NEVER got back! I don't mess with them anymore and I discourage my friends and family shopping there.

The location I worked at was a part of a mall, in Canada, and I guess I was lucky to work for a store that wasn't toxic, and didn't push us to drive sales--especially during the busy holiday season. One thing that did strike me was when we'd get Groupon vouchers, and there was a whole discrepency about how to redeem them. I also remember asking my manager how the company makes a profit with all these crazy discounts and deals and she just shrugged and told me she had no idea lol

I worked for the body shop flagship store at bond Street,London, they give u a team briefing before you start and tell u individually how high or low your sales and points card conversion are and push you everyday to force customers to to get a points card you literally have to make sure u give customers a points card or it goes against your conversion chart on your till login number, they push u to sell ,sell , sell and are constantly pressurising you, and threaten you with diseplineries as points cards and average transactions are classed as part of your job and say that if its low then your not doing your job properly, but they put you in different zones Example till for 3 hours, so it doesnt make sense as if your on the till you cant control who is advising customers what to buy as your not allowed to move off the till, we lernt that it costs the company 90pence to make a full tub of body butter but sell it to customers for 15.00, all they care about is money money money nothing is ever good enough, each store is in competition with the next. Overall it was an extremely toxic place to work and im so so happy they have gone into recession, thats what you get for being greedy horrible & money grabbing, they act like you work for chanel in harrods its an absolute joke

We did well at first selling however the rewatds were low and operating costs were high as we often did pedicure parties in which you constantly needed to replenish inventory for. We never were interested in the recruiting side of things. This was well before I was educated on this business model. We left because the company would often compete with their consultants in which customers could get better deals in store than shopping with a consultant. Years ago, like 15-20 years ago, I was given a few products from The Body Shop as a holiday gift from one of my parents’ friends. (If I’m honest I didn’t use much of the products, but I think that had more to do with the scents they chose than anything else.) I have seen the brick and mortar stores and never thought anything of it, I just thought it was like any other store that sold soap, lotion, etc. until I started consuming anti-MLM content over the last couple years and that’s when I realized that I could’ve gotten roped into supporting an MLM at like 12. I’ve never been so grateful for not particularly liking the scent of watermelon

Hi Isabella. I know this is an older video, but if you encounter an article that's locked behind a paywall, it doesn't hurt to ask the author if they are willing to send it to you, especially if the publication is older. Publishers that lock science articles or studies especially, rarely compensate the researchers properly, and more often than not, are happy to forward their work to interested people.

I was a consultant in the early 2000s. I made a couple of hundred a month doing parties. It was really time consuming and my upline pretty much ignored me because I didn’t want to recruit. I eventually left. They did close down shortly after Anita passed away. I was very upset when they relaunched the MLM again a few years ago. I’m not surprised they closed it again.

I just recently quit the body shop this year and lemme tell you that the upper management is a mess! Also my store manager was verbally abusive and would consistently break rules and would gaslight everyone to agree with her. After i had a fallout with her, she threw me under the bus as her full time and gave me less hours because "they were cutting hours all around" but she still maintained her 40 hour work week. My check in the beginning was $1300 bi-weekly and by the end of my 2 years with the company my last check was $600. They are the most unethical and cruel running bodycare store. Also they refuse to update the stores especially where i was located because "the heater is just not worth closing the store for a week". I have so much tea on this company and i am sooooo glad i no longer work there.

20:50 I can't believe that an *employee discount* is listed as "earnings." I know the The Body Shop isn't the only company that tries to pass off employee discounts as "earnings" rather than a *discount* but come on. Savings =/= earnings. If a consultant chooses to not buy any products for themselves, does that count as "earning" too??

I actually ended up at an awkward “party” for Body Shop several years ago. It didn’t make sense to sell direct to my friends when they could walk into the mall and purchase without giving me a dime. I enjoyed the products but competition with a brick and mortar seemed ludicrous. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Wow I never knew the shady history behind the body shop! I used to be a die hard fan for them but I couldn’t get over them selling the business to L’Oréal as it went against everything they stood for.
In the U.K. it’s called the Body Shop at Home and if it was actually designed as a social selling get commission for the products you recommend I would have probably been sucked in to it as I was a die hard fan on the products before they sold to L’Oréal.
I don’t understand the reasoning behind a brand that has such a massive physical and online presence moving into the MLM world even if it’s the exact same product I would rather buy it from the store or online that through a rep!

I find it strange that they've stopped using the MLM structure in the US and carried on with it in the UK. I'm from the UK and have known a fair few people get involved with various MLMs, but the focus for those people always does seem to be mostly on selling the products and hardly anyone I know has ever really gotten into the recruitment side of things. Maybe they'll eventually start phasing out the MLM structure in other countries as well in time. We can only hope.

I thought I'd heard their MLM side was being closed down? The only perfume I can stand to use is their vanilla (so many perfumes give me massive headaches or bad allergic reactions, so I can't even risk scentbird). They've been sold out of that for it looks like years. I have maybe 1/3 of the last bottle I bought from them years ago. They still haven't restocked it and I don't know how I feel about that. I will miss having the perfume, but then again, I'm not supporting an MLM. (I only ever bought direct from them, not through the MLM side.) I hadn't bought anything since I had heard they were an MLM, but didn't toss out products that were still good. lol I'm cheap like that.

So, I'm interested in knowing more about it because not too long ago, my mom received a body butter from the body shop, which is strange because all of their stores disappeared here in Mexico. So, I asked and she told me it's because it was gifted alongside a Natura product which is another MLM from Brazil I believe. I wonder if Natura bought them or they are the same thing just a different name because they do sell all allegedly natural products. 🤔

    • @ReginaJupiter
      @ReginaJupiter ปีที่แล้ว

Hi, long answer here from ex employee* because these bitches are shady in the simplest things too😅
They are owned by natura since 2017 or 2018 I believe; not sure about the year specifically because they were training us with slideshows on the store’s pc (we couldn’t have photocopies of the slides etc so we can read stuff at home too, shady imo 🤠) and as far as I can remember they didn’t really touch that much on that natura thing either.
The slide -again, as far as I can remember- only said that natura is Brazil-based, natural products yada-yada and that the company owns tbs, Avon (shocker..) and aesop 👁️.
Take that as you will 🤭
*I was working for a year at tbs in Greece btw, it’s not as crazy as in the other countries, we don’t have the MLM thing here, but still pretty shady stuff is happening (as always in this country ☠️). The trainings were just slideshows on shift and that’s it. At least when I was in sephora I could have access to training material as a revision etc.

Your not wrong, actually when i worked there up until recently, the company has been pouring their resources and time in the Canadian market because that market makes the most profits since last year. As of 2023 to my knowledge there are less than 15ish stores in the U.S now. They recently closed stores in the chicagoland, denver and in michigan. They keep their marketing pretty simple and expect the employees to be walking advertisments in and out of work. Their products are great but their upper management continously violate and abuse the store employees.

This one kinda surprised me to be honest. I used to always buy their little jars of lip balm cause I loved the fruity scents they had. And the store was in the shopping center I went in with my fam. So it was an easy detour for a bit more fancy feeling little thing. I had no idea of any of this, which in away is kinda eye opening...You never really know anything about brands on the outside as just an average dude. Makes me kind of think what other 'better choices' could I make in life without ever knowing I am making the...not so ideal choice with my money.
Naturally as the world is now, it is complex to ever make a perfect choice cause it feels like everything has something sus going on.
