They were two of the biggest groups on the Motown label at the time and this would be the first time both groups would share the stage together. Although they had an unforgettable performance there was drama behind the scenes that took place before, during, and after the performance as the talent and egos of Diana Ross and David Ruffin collided before a national audience.

Ruffin was a glorious singer but a really bad guy. The turning point wasn't just his monstrous ego but, his savage beating of Tami Terrell with a motorcycle helmet. Terrell later suffered from a malignant brain tumor and it was suspected by some at Motown that Ruffin may have contributed to her illness. Marvin Gaye, who was devastated by Terrell's death, wanted to whip Ruffin's ass. Terrell died at the age of 24.

I don't know why this isn't common knowledge but Ross' power over Gordy was money. The Supremes, with Ross as lead singer, was making more money for Motown than any other group on the label. They were the first black group, male or female, to sell a million records three years in a row. If you Google who was the top selling group of Motown today, it'll say the Supremes. They had 12 #1 hits in just six years! Ross was, and I don't mean to be disrespectful, the goose that laid the golden egg!
All these things happened because Berry Gordy was completely obsessed with Diana Ross
