Mashallah, seeing a brother who is a non-native Arabic speaker understand and speak Arabic better than me (first generation Arab in US) is very humbling. This inspires me to strengthen my language and learn more to teach my future children insha' Allah.

a year for somebody who is diligent and consistent is a lot of time. Truly. A lot of systems work, be it the andalus institute, a private teacher, or for those that don't have a lot of money to spend free youtube courses. There are 2 playlists that I mainly used to study and I made it a habit to listen to arabic content that I find interesting and when I came to egypt some time ago Alhamdulillah I could communicate with everybody and spoke better Arabic than a lot of the students that have been studying a year or two.
Success is in asking Allah constantly and then providing the means in a manner which one can afford, and then keep making dua and sticking to one's efforts.

Salamualaykum, he’s absolutely correct when he says it shouldn’t take no more than a year to speak, to understand, to read, and to be understood. I’ve mixed many different methods in my learning and alhamdulilah I can say I can understand and be understood. Just focused now on sharpening grammar and vocabulary.

First, thank you for your efforts. May Allah reward you and all those contributing to the teaching and learning of the Arabic Language. Second, the Shaykh is right on point. The best way to go about learning any language is to benefit from the commonality and usage of everyday speech. Then, one can go further into the language and learn the specific subjects in details, like nahw, sarf, balagah, etc… I’m a healthcare professional and when I started my medical education, I had to take medical terminology before diving deep into any and all my medical classes. I’m a native English speaker. Thus, what the Shaykh said about learning the commonalities of the language first is very important and is often overlooked. May Allah grant us the patience and ability to gain his favors. Allahumma Ameen!

I read al arabiyyah bayina yadayka and understand many vocabularies, statements, conversations, and many things, it's a very important book if someone ready book 1 to book3 then he can catch up arabic language, but in addition Quran word by word also very important if someone read Quran from surah fatiha to surah sunnas by word by word translation he can catch up many arabic vocabularies too.

Reading the word by word translation isnt gonna help, you need to know the form that the verb is in. How to use the nouns and verbs with what particle it comes with and what it does in order to understand.

And his replies seemed so clear and logical, no doubt he has gained treasures of knowledge of the mubarak language and he knows what he's talking about. May Allah (Tabarak wa ta 'Aala) bless you both for spreading so much goodness and making it possible for muslims around the world to be able to understand the very words of Allah (Subhana wa ta 'Aala). Please keep up the great work and conduct more such amazing interviews. Jazak Allahu Khairan.

To have this opportunity and sit with the author, that must be an honour. Asking him to see your program or way of teaching what he thinks about it and what you need to change this is what you call a really good teacher! Not just that but taking risk by asking questions which might get answers that can be to different from his own ways of teaching at his Institute and than to put it out for all of us to see it is. Just brave and very honest, he got my repsect for that. Very rare to find teachers like that. May Allah bless them, Ameen.

Jazaka Allah khairan akhi. Lisan al Arab is a huge lexicon. I am not on that level... 😔. Anyway thanks for your work. I will keep building up and learning more vocabulary in sha Allah. I agree with you and the Sheikh practicing is essential in any language not so easy when you don't live amongst Arabs.

    Very insightful interview. BarakAllah feek.
I want to recycle a question which you asked the author because I didn’t see a clear answer… How do you get to the point where you can understand the books of scholars on various subjects? For example, I’ve read the first and half of the second Madinah Arabic books, and studied basic Sarf, but I can’t really understand books by Ibn Al-Qayyim yet. So how and when do you get to the point where you can begin to understand books in Arabic?
