The (then) 23 year old singer, Eric Burdon grew up in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. He said that his early life and experiences at school were like a 'nightmare' for various reasons, and that between the air pollution and humidity in the town he suffered asthma attacks daily. Maybe that accounts for his raspy voice and wise-beyond-his-years persona. Thanks for playing this. It's a rock classic.

My birthday is in December, so I bet you are old ahhh,,, hmmmm... -er. Fewer and fewer of us around. Wonderful age to have grown up in Canada. Many memories and freedoms kids today will never know. Enjoyments with simplicity. Possibly, in my opinion, the happiest generation in my life span so far... but that could change since I plan to be around for a few more years. Maybe not until 2055, but close.

Not only was it live, they only had the money to rent the studio for this one single recording.... and somehow they had the balls to move the keyboard during recording so he'd be the last thing you see coming into shot during the ending... he was next to the drums the entire song, except the ending.

What I notice about Eric Burdon, aside from his remarkable voice, is the '1000 yard stare' he has, like some military people get when they've been through too much and seen too many things they wish they had never seen that have marked them forever. When he looks at the camera he looks both at it, and he looks straight through it to something only he can see.

Thanks a lot. For me it's the best and most bewitching version of that very old traditionel folk song covered by the greatest artists. (Bob Dylan, Marianne Faithfull, Nina Simone, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Frijid Pink, Dolly Parton, etc.). A huge impressive masterpiece. Every time, I'm watching a reaction to this track with crazy Eric Burdon's vocals, , I'm floating in the same mesmerizing seventh heaven. Never get fed up listening to it. As always, love your so touching reaction.

It's a cautionary tale, "Mothers, tell your children not to do what I have done ... ," what NOT to do in your life, to avoid the pitfalls and lures of the sordid life. To my brain, the most poignant line in the lyrics: "Well, I've got one foot on the platform, the other foot on the train. I'm goin' back to New Aw-lee-uns, to wear that ball-and-chain." He's resigned to live a life of ruination, to expect only the worst to befall him "in the House of the Rising Sun."

The Animals put out some really good songs. My personal favorite was "Sky Pilot". On that song it gets to a point that seems like the climax then starts trailing off and you think it is ending. Then it comes back in soft and slow with an orchestra. Then it builds up again.

    FUN FACT:
No one knows who wrote “House of the Rising Sun”.
Because Eric Burdon and the Animals had such a massive hit with their recording of this song back in 1964, most people assume Eric Burdon wrote it. Fact is, no one knows who wrote it.
Musicologists have tried to track down its origins but it's so old that its origins are lost in the murky mists of time. It may even go back all the way to 17th century England in a form that became known as "Broadside Ballads." If it did originate in England then it probably came to America via some ocean-going traveler who may have sung it here in the U.S. and then others picked it up and it slowly got passed around. Also, if it did originate in England, then someone had to have changed the location of the brothel from its location in England to New Orleans, probably to make the song more relevant to American audiences. That is all speculation, obviously, since no one knows for sure what the original lyrics were in that particular verse.
Another interesting thing about the song is that in some versions it's about a man lamenting his experience in the brothel while in other versions it's a woman telling of her trials and tribulations at the brothel. I first heard it by folk singer, Joan Baez, a year or two before the Animals' released their version. In the Animals version the narrator is a man. In the Baez version the narrator is a woman.
There is also a version of the song by the legendary folk singer, Huddie (Leadbelly) Leadbetter, that is so different (both melodically and lyrically) that it's barely recognizable as the same song.
Another early rendition of the song was by Bob Dylan about 3 years before the Animals released their hit version. The oft-told story about Dylan "stealing" the song from folk/blues singer, Dave Van Ronk, is sort of true but also sort of not true. The "sort of true" part is that Dylan did first hear the song being performed by Van Ronk who wanted to record it. But Dylan included it on his own debut album (released in 1962) before Van Ronk got a chance to record it. The "sort of not true" part is that no one "owns" that song so you can't "steal" something that is not owned by anyone. And, as far as I'm aware, no one really knows where Van Ronk heard the song in the first place.
Back in the '60s, a plethora of folk singers were all hanging around in coffee houses in New York's East Village where traditional folk songs were passed around and performed by anyone who wanted to sing them. People didn't have cell phones back then so there was no way to record a song on the spot. So, if some traveling folk-singer happened to hear a song somewhere, and then moved on to another town and sang the song for another audience, the singer might not remember exactly how the lyrics went and would just make up new lyrics to fill in for the lyrics that he/she couldn't remember. This happened for decades (even hundreds of years in some cases) and that's why there are so many versions of old folk songs. Musicologists sometimes refer to this borrowing, changing, and adapting of a song as "the folk process".

This is an old folk song, covered by many musicians and arranged in a variety of ways, but as soon as this version hit the scene, it became what people think of when they think of this song. British invasion was amazing. It turned music on its head and inspired a lot of the major American artists of the time period (this song and the Beatles were a major influence on Bob Dylan going electric as he saw "rock" versions of these folk songs by British groups and realized he could make badass music by plugging in).

I am old enough that for me this song is a staple of campfire songs (speaking as a European former member of the Scouts)
PS: these days the bow they take at the end seems almost Japanese 😉 Only goes to show that the past is just like a different culture to us!

I believe "The House of the Rising Sun" is an infamous prison in Louisiana. Burdon and The Animals did it in the studio in one take. No music console to adjust any volume or tenor of the song!

To me the most influential music , (other than classical) began with the big bands and ended in the 70,s ,,since then I’m unimpressed

The origin of this song is questionable, but the first time it was recorded seems to be 1933. I can't imagine that it was ever sung with the same soul that Eric Burdon put into it.

A recommendation from the same period in time an amazing Danish singer Annisette with the band Savage Rose. Like Eric Burdon she is still going strong today... I recommend "I girl I knew" from 1968 or my favorite "Wild Child" from 1973 (but there's not an actual video to that one I think)
