puhh it´s a tough decision. Although I love Acustica and own them except from coffee myself, I also would give probs to the Slate Plugins this time (especially the 1176). In this context I would also recommend the Taupe Comp from Acustica. Even though it´s their Tape Emu, I really like the comp in this pack on Drumbusses. It fits not always, but especially for the snare very punchy
And yes with comps Acustica isn´t as top notch (yet) as with their EQs, PREs etc. But I would hardly recommend N4/Nebula and then almost everything from TIm Petherick. Not only for me the best compressors ITB. The L-Bus, Vari-Level and SUM 100 (especially for Bass) are soo great, also for drums and fast transients (TimP seems to use another type of sampling technique) And before I forget it, although it´s from London Acoustics for N4: Brighton, their Opto/TUbe COmpressor. That´s also a real beast :)
@@dawnderhenker honestly the amount of people advising me to try out the TimP comps is unreal haha definitely going to do a video just on his comps when I have time to try them out 😃 I agree I do think acustica will get to a point where their comps are comparible to their eq's and pre's.. They just haven't found the right formula yet. Out of all of them I would put faith in AA to nail the analog compressor sound.. Just not there yet. However from conversations I've had, not many have truly managed to nail the true analogue characteristics of compression. However, there's been a lot of comment about the DMG zener but I can't comment on anything analogue. I've used one analogue compressor in my life unfortunately
@@PaulThird thats a real bummer. I have so many acustica and nebula plugins (urs favourite is mine since years: tim p opto32 and every compressor he does is just beautiful) before i was using uad, ssl native and slates vbc and thought those were the best plugins... I had no idea how much better tim p sounds. But i will give the dmg a big test. Btw the very best algo comp i have ever used is arousor. You will be amazed. Acustica like sound in an algo plugin.
166 and 266 are cheap, same stuff internally with more features than 160vu and 160x. I think the 1046 is like the cooler 160a variant, same dbx updated vca. The hardware is darn inexpensive, and good.
Dude the Blue Modern from Slate is my Goto as well, its like using an La2a and SSL Comp rolled into one compressor very tight very snappy but a really newer sound
@@PaulThird Thanks, good to know! Also noticed my original comment wasn't specific enough, I meant to ask which of the two 1176 models in TrackComp 2 you used against the Slate one, if that wasn't clear, but I think that was self-evident.
Paul! Have you bought the DMG TRACKCOMP? :) Do you still like it as much? I think it sounds great in your video. Do you think the 2500 is as good as UAD's ?
Nah I'm stubborn as shit. I don't buy plugins these days 🤣 I chanced my arm but they said no which is completely fair so I just left it. Extremely good compressor bundle though, I'd say arguably the best out there
I recently demoed TrackComp 2 and I found it insanely good. If I didn't already own u-he Presswerk as my desert island compressor, I purchase the DMG one in an instant.
The bx Townhome....gives you a very unique polish....im using on Pre Masters after I use the DMG on the Final Mix........then through on PA Townhome before looping through the Analog on Export
Slate FG Modern is where, a better sounding 76 just beats UAD and the rest of them, even if the others are modeling the original unit better, it just comes down to which one has that new, crisp tight sound, Slate FG Modern on Drums is "Next Level"
This was super helpful. Subbin’. I’ve heard a ton of good things about Track Comp on forums but there’s not a whole lot of media out about it. There’s a lot about their limiter though. Both sound fantastic. I have a problem with compressors... Plugin folder full of them! If TC2 can knock a couple of them out of that crowded folder it will be worth it haha.
I was hoping for a black Friday deal but I was told they work on a more you buy, less it costs model. Definitely the best compressor bundle on the market!!
@@PaulThird same, I kept checking for a sale at DMG! 😂. I did pick up Unisum this week since everyone raves about it, 40% off. Gonna have a play today :)
@@mrnelsonius5631 let me know how you get on as I've heard A LOT about this compressor. Many have told me it's the best bus comp out there. It's on my to review list haha I picked up the TDR kotelnikov GE as I refuse to pay the extortionate price of the softube weiss. Now I have the transparent compressor I've always needed 🤓
@@PaulThird I actually have the Weiss. They did a big sale and I got an upgrade price. Still too expensive. It sounds amazing, but my only “super clean” comp I had were the fab filters so splurged. Weiss is great, but def doesn’t warrant its full price. Using it like I would a multiband and it’s great at that, but I have a feeling Unisum is going to make me regret that purchase haha. We’ll see tho.
I was looking for a weiss alternative and I was told to try the paid version of the kotelnikov and it gives me exactly what I'm looking for at like £26 BF price. Excellent transparent compressor. Lots of great compression tweaks and very high resolution. I like how you can also add harmonics as well if you want 🤓 However unisum is probably the biggest hyped comp I've been told about after the TimP comps so it definitely needs a review or shootout at some point.
I think AA and UAD.....should have been a little more reasonable and acessable as far as price and getting access to them from a Marketing Stand Point.......I believe.....Analog Obsession, DMG and Plugin Alliance.....and some of waves utility plugins....are the best out the there.......
I swear maybe its the YT compression or something but when you start chuckling about how huge the difference is, especially on the 1176 and 2500 examples, I hardly hear a difference. If anything on my monitors I can pick out the Acoustica ones cause they sound a bit more 3D. On my IEMS, I can hear tiny bit more impact on the DMG over the Acoustica Pink but it's so subtly I would never hear the difference listening casually.
I heard it through cheapish wireless bose headphones but that's just me I suppose. Still all subtle at the end of the day to the average listener but I dunno, suppose we all critically listen differently 🤷♂️
It's not the YT compression and it isn't (only) about the quality of your monitoring situation. I'd say it's 85% about your ear training and listening carefully.
How you been using it. My problem is that an 1178 is just a stereo 1176 so will be intrigued to hear what it does compared to 1176 hardware and another plug that's very close to it
@@PaulThird real talk....I’ve been using the mono instance. I use it on rap vocals and, to steal a phrase “chef’s kiss”. I compared it to purple and I didn’t realize how bright purple was until I compared it to this. I still like purple. It’s dirty. But I’ll likely be using a high shelf after it going forward if I pull it up again. 1178 is just very smooth and buttery. I’m not huge on the saturation models on it but I might have to play with it more. I’ve been using BIG AL after it blended to taste to dirty it up since it is pretty clean and it’s a knock out combo IMO.
Come on bro Stop being a brand chaser I’ll be honest with you You really want to get on the next level? And even save money with hardware I would go with a nebula, an acoustica audio route Nebula and Acustica Audio Makes a $20,000 studio sound like a $500,000 studio if you know how to track out right, mix and master correctly and use your tools, right
AA and nebula is basically gonna put a lot of the high end hardware out of business Just today I was Using the Tim P 1176 and Pre Amp with Nebula Together those two nebula plug-ins sound as good as any physical 1176 you could go buy you literally waste your money if you just buy that instead of using those nebula plug-ins because they’re giving you the live analog sampling from the units
Yeah. It's a shame I never managed to get time to finish it, but I mixed the drums, bass and guitar so it's handy to keep for demos 🤓 Yeah it's the best comp bundle on the market imo. DMG zener is worth that price alone haha

about that DBX 160, maybe we should try n60a by Tim P... very impressive sound, classicly snappy but with a good depth
