Really glad that theres someone like Wendigoon who is actually a Christian and has had a very deep connection with the faith for most of his life to weigh in and explain a lot of these topics which could easily be manipulated without prior knowledge. really adds another layer to the whole thing and always very engaging.

    • @warbossgegguz679
      @warbossgegguz679 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +259

I will say as a Catholic hearing him struggle to remember anything about St. Francis was humorous. But yeah his scriptural insight is very good for the podcast.
He did kind of flubbed up when talking about Satanism in the Goatman episode, since an inverted cross has only really become a "symbol of Satanism" because of edgy teens/punk culture, when in real demonology ANY cross is a christian cross. Changing the direction it's facing doesn't change anything. And on that note, the inverted cross was originally a symbol of St. Peter since he was Crucified upside-down. And there are a ton of other cross-variants mean to tie into specific saints and orders.
The ACTUAL symbols of Satanism are the Three-Pronged cross (aka Judas Priest's logo) and the leviathan cross. So ironically his statement about most Satanists being posers is even more true than he realizes. The inverted pentagram was taken by them just because it was a pagan symbol of good will, and the church is obviously not into paganism, so they flipped it upsidedown because I guess that implies it's "Even more anti-christian!" or something. Sort of like what edgy Varg-wannabes do with Mjolnir and nordic runes.
So yeah, most people claiming to be Satanists are just really edgy atheists/antitheists trying to piss people off, and they have like 0 understanding of demonology themselves.

@oliviavanbrink Unification Church! One of our guys just killed the prime minister of Japan last year. We didn't plan it though, he did it because the prime minister had ties to the church and he resented the church cause the members give a lot of their money to it. He saw his inheritance being lost to it and was upset, so he wanted to kill the founder's wife (founder already passed) but went for the minister out of convenience since he supported the church.
I'm an American who lives in Japan now as an ex member.

@oliviavanbrink Grew up hating pagans and doing a lot of conditions. Idk if other religions have them, but conditions are like things you do to set up the spiritual preparation for something to happen. So the church leaders would say they need some number of members or families to commit to a condition before an event in order for God to accept it. Then, for some number of days, usually 21 or 40, those people would have to follow a condition. This was usually some type of fasting, or most often bowing and praying. I'd often have to wake up at 5am and bow 21 times to a picture of the leaders, then pray. Every morning we'd wake up early and chant the family pledge in Korean without knowing wtf we were saying lol. And then go to school, see everyone around me as unholier, and pretend to be normal 😭

Wendigoon is such a great addition to this kind of podcast. Because theological themes always show up and I am screaming for podcasts to talk about it when I recognize it. He provides a lot of awesome insight. Also a great representative of Christianity. I am agnostic but he makes reading through the bible and its diffferent translations and such incredibly interesting and i am taking a theology class at school because of it. Also the radical empathy on display here for the mentally ill is very welcome in the coverage of this situation. I always viewed it as incredibly sad. Being so ill, and so forgotten that you want to ascend and disappear. You make your own world to live in. I did that as a kid when things got rough. I fortunately I knew the difference between reality and pretend. I always try to relate to the worst people in true crime. I think doing that on a larger scale, but still having an even hand when it comes to rehabilitation and punishment, is the way forward. Radical empathy sometimes can be hard. And its okay to deny certain groups of people it(pedos who have made contact with kids) but i do think we need more empathy like this. Because there are a lot of people who are similar to early Applewhite listening im sure. But they will never go on to hurt anyone. We need to ensure they know that they aren't pariahs and if they're medicated they can almost always have a decent life. My cousin is schizophrenic and I think of him when that stuff comes up.

Just a comment about Wendi saying that he thinks most people claiming religious trauma are overreacting--maybe some of them are, but most of them are telling the truth. My dad started taking me to an extremely conservative church after my parents split up (I was 6) and they were a church that believed everyone is born an evil sinner, and therefore everything bad that happens in your life is god's punishment for your inherent sinfulness. They were telling me, a six year old, that my parents divorced and my dad became an alcoholic and my sister developed severe mental health issues because I was born a sinner and I deserved to suffer along with everyone around me. I tried to take my own life at 8 years old. It didn't work because I didn't know how to do it, so I tried again at 10. I firmly believed I would be sent to burn for all eternity if I succeeded, and I STILL tried because that was more appealing than watching everyone around you suffer because you were just born wrong. Religious trauma is very real and far more common than many people think.

Yeah I think Wendigoon's bias towards Christianity showed a bit there, and tbh I understand why he's of that opinion even though I don't agree with it. Theres a very common belief in the churches I've been to that the negative aspects of Christianity are overdramatized. Mainly because they don't see those aspects of it in thier own church. I'm not trying to talk bad about those people, they're usually good folks, I just get what your talkin about is what I'm sayin I guess.

To be clear, you don't need to have a mental condition to fall prey to cults like this. All it takes is to have a fragile state of mind, something that can come from something as simple as a traumatic event, or series of events.
Even if you're super well adjusted.

That’s why so many young disenfranchised (usually white) men are groomed into possessing radicalized right wing ideologies because those groups know perfectly how to take advantage of their mental state & slowly but surely mold them into another extremist willing to launch an attack on something they deem “traitorous” for their country.
Innuendo Studios has an amazing video about this exact occurrence that details the dangers of the Alt-Right Pipeline & how it’s trappings are pulled off to create more sad men into angry ones.

Completely agree. Furthermore, EVEN IF your life is going great, and you have no physical, mental, social, financial or other life problems leaving you in a vulnerable state of mind and you're doing completely great, you can still be manipulated by these groups. That's why education and research on these groups and events is so important, because by understanding that Every person is susceptible to these tactics, you are better able to recognise the signs if you encounter a situation like that in your own life. Pretty expected for a man whose based his life around Christianity.
The contrast is pretty stark here. On one side you have atheist Jackson who compiles dozens of pages of notes on a given topic and freely shares all the sources they come from in the document
Compared to christian wendigoon who just admit he has never scripted any of his videos and never provides sources he gets his info from.
Not surprisingly the latter is the one who will just discount information if it doesn't conform to his chosen beliefs.

43:24 I was raised in a fundamentalist sect that outsiders described as “cult-ish.” This “not quite a cult” created the curriculum that my homeschooling was based on, and I was taught far-right pseudo-science my entire life. The science I was taught was more akin to creationist apologetics. Christianity was used as a way to excuse homophobia, racism, and sexism. (The women were expected to always wear skirts in public and to be submissive to the men in their lives. Interracial dating was not allowed at the college until about 15 years ago.)
These people oversaw my college education, and as a closeted bisexual man it was an intense situation. I had friends who were found out as gay by those running the college. (not practicing homosexuals mind u, simply people who were attracted to the same sex) The people running the college would blackmail these students into ratting out their fellow queer students, out them to their families, and then kick them out of school.
I have since left the Christian faith entirely. I realize these people do not represent Christianity as a whole, and most Christian’s I meet are lovely people. I find wendigoon’s approach to Christianity as a breath of fresh air, but please remember there are a near infinite amount of different versions of Christianity, and some people will use the guise of Christianity to control others. The trauma is often very real.

Wendigoon also sucks for this shit too hahah. Just don't trust people that base their life around it, it's a good rule of thumb.
Don't believe me about wendigoon? Well the fact he admits he never scripts any of his videos nor does he ever cite sources for his information should tell you all you need to know about how accurate he is on any given topic. You just need to assume that he remembers things correctly, which is stupid as hell.

43:14 it’s a little fucked up to doubt the truth of someone’s religious traumas or think they’re just exaggerating about them solely bc it’s never happened to you as a practicer of the same faith.
i have two friends who were raised in cults. like two honest-to-god, documented cults, much like heaven’s gate but more christian and less alien-y. when they met me, i was still christian, and when they told me ab their experiences, i didnt doubt them for a second, even though my church experiences were great.
