  • I hand forge a spear in my traditional blacksmith shop and grill some meat in the forrest. I use mild steel about 6mm.

I like to make my skewers out of square stock and give it alternating twists throughout the length. It keeps most of whatever you have skewered from twisting without you wanting it too while cooking. Really missed my coal forge watching you work.

Beautiful work! I always enjoy seeing your blacksmithing work. It is an addicting hobby and the feeling of satisfaction when you forge something useful, take it to camp and enjoy using it is just priceless. The meal looked excellent my friend! Take care.

It's dealt with the same way how you fellas deal with the heat. I would literally melt humid or not. The highlands of Scotland is cold this time of year and the damp is wicked. Enjoy the sun man and happy hiking

Manitoba is beautiful but you certainly have to have a thick skin about yah to be able to live there during winter hey Here's Johnny... do you travel the ice roads? I am from Newfoundland/labrador it's -20 right now and the windchill making it feel like -35 also a blizzard on the go. The wind is roaring at times between 100 to 115 km per hour. The weather here can change very quickly I guess that is why the elders say if don't like our weather here wait 5 minutes.

You have a really nice workshop. Could you have simply taken a bar and filed or ground a point on one end and called it done? Sure! But to make the extra effort to not only forge it and add some scroll work, let alone challenge yourself to make three that are close to identical, is a good example of a simple forging project to challenge your skills and consistency without worrying about ending up with unusable waste if it doesn't go exactly right since so long as there is a straight section and a point, it will work. Thanks for sharing! 👍👍

Thanks. I will consider it - but don't think I will do it. The blacksmith tool series show the essential (isn't much more to show, just a building that is nothing special). The plan is to make an outdoor blacksmith shop next summer and show the process here on the channel - just a small simple one.

Nice little meat skewers Rune. If I can offer some advice without offending I'd try to keep an eye on the height of your 'tong hand' when you're forging tapers. On the first one your hand was much higher from the anvil face than it needed to be for that angle of taper, which why you got that bend (what we'd call a 'dogs leg') when you struck in from the end of the bar onto the unsupported material. The front end wiggling around when you start forging on the square is the result if you don't immediately correct it.
As you probably know the angle of the bar relative to the face of the anvil can be used to dictate how steep or shallow the taper will be. Not trying to teach you to suck eggs, just make things easier. Now I'm going to grill something that used to have four legs, video made me hungry ;)

For jeg er meget interesseret i netop bushcraft og overlevelse, derfor kunne jeg godt se det fede i at lave en lejr et "hemmeligt" sted hvor man bare kan tage hen og være dig selv..
