- Usain Bolt is one of the greatest athletes of this generation but his stint as a footballer is a one to forget. His dream to play for Manchester United would not be fulfilled as he would bounce around in trainings and trials from different teams like Borussia Dortmund, Stromsgodset, and Central Coast Mariners. Unfortunately he would lack the skill to stick around in any of these clubs and he would retire from football just 1 year after starting.

Not everyone has the ability to make it to the biggest stage especially in a field like sports. One can be known as the fastest puncher, highest jumper, longest thrower, fastest swimmer, because they are in the spotlight. So numerous fast people would only be known in their locales. The phrase, "considered the fastest," would then be right to use.
Of course but take the example where some species are declared extinct because they haven't been spotted in a while but later it's discovered some individuals still exist. It's safer to use the word "considered/known."

I feel like the criticism in this video is a bit too harsh, even in the ''red flag'' highlights he doesn't look that bad. Sure he was extremely delusional, but he was basically an average player trying to be a professional right away, from these highlights I don't think he looked that bad, seems like he would do pretty good in lower tiers of football

Bolt's case is a perfect example just because you have the connection to enter a profession or position does not mean you'll have the skills to remain there. People often tend to think certain decision might be unfair(like bolt) but sometimes you just have to humble yourself and realize your not as good as you thought you were

Technical ability isn’t about being a freestyler. It is much more simple than that. The ability to control the ball simply from any scenario. Distribution of the ball, ability to carry the ball at various speeds and distances. You do not need to know how to do a sombrero flick to do these yet these small examples I gave are what the average player must do. What do you think goalkeepers and Defenders are judged on? 😂
@@hurbrowns5397in a basic sense, the level of proficiency in which you can pass, dribble, shoot, control the ball with your first touch under pressure, play in tight spaces. Those are basic on ball skills that top players master, then from there some can do more advanced skills. Off ball skills and game IQ are equally important though.

Not only did he not have basic football skills, he also chose the wrong positon to play because he wants to be cool. He is fast (whithout the ball) and tall, meaning he should focus more on the defensive side of the game since he lacks basic techicals, Fullback (not like cancelo but the more traditional role) or even a fast center back would have been much better choices to start at the pro level. Yes he woudl still fail at positioning, but thats something that can be slowly learned even at 30 years of age. He would still be clumsy as hell, but its easier to disguise that when defending.
The truth is, he was completely delusional, and although he could play pro football if he was a litle more honest whith him self, he would never even get close to what he wanted which was man united level.

Full backs usually have one of the best ball control and technique on the team though. It is very important for that position as you need to carry the ball forward a lot.

It isn’t harsh but a fact. Usain could maybe have been an incredible footballer but he spent his development solely for sprinting. In another case if he had devoted himself to football and had the football equivalent of support he had in track he may have been one if the most incredible strikers or wide forwards the game has ever seen but it is all speculation. One could only dream of what a 6’5 forward running in behind at 27mph or taking on opponents at blazing speed would do at the top stages of the game (Bale v Bartra, Robben v Spain, Mbappe pretty much every game & Walcott similar all come to mind yet he would’ve been even faster and if he had the ability of Henry?)…

@@DontAttme sprinting is just one aspect of the game though. there is no guarantee that he would have been any good even if he had football training. most guys who spent their lots of their youth at academies never make it to the top leagues. and i don't see any reason to believe he had any major advantages when it comes to learning skills. football requires another level of coordination than sprinting, completely different skillset and being able to run fast doesn't make you learn those skills faster. only thing you could say is that he has proven to have the discipline to be a high level pro, but that goes for any elite athlete, regardless the sport he comes from. you might as well say that muhammed ali could have been a great basketball player because he had good footwork, hand-eye coordination and was tall.

Sometimes some elite players are called out for being headless, only good at running in a straight line, etc. But Bolt is proof that even players considered like that are technically elite players, and that speed alone is useless in football. Without ball control, one cannot become professional. And depending on the position on the pitch, many different qualities that need many years of training are needed. And raw talent isn't even enough to become an elite player. A huge talent will become professional, but reaching the elite like Man Utd takes a lot of work and dedication during many years. Hugely talented players that don't work hard or have a dodgy behaviour can have a chance in those clubs during a time, when they're young, but they don't succeed.
Had he been training all his life with good players aside from athletics, he could maybe have reached semi-pro level starting his career at 31, but there's no way he could have done it to the top, except if he had been a football prodigy among the very best ever, and with huge work. And yet, not sure.

The type of sprint is also extremely important here. Football does not value 100m sprint. There isn't any chance for a 100m sprint in football. Most sprints are 10m or less. Bolt is not a fast sprinter in the first 10m. His height is an advantage. He is a 6'5" guy. He is very tall in the football player standard.

I think also his mistake was not humbling himself and playing as a defender. I think he would have played better there (No need to dribble etc, just attack the ball and hoof it up the pitch) plus he is tall which is good for the air. The only thing he would have had to work on would be positioning and reading of the game. But he wanted to play in positions which are extremely technical.
he would have been even worse as a defender since mistakes from defenders get punished more often and his first touch was terrible. we would have made so many mistakes as a defender. maybe at best a wingback in a back 5 who just runs up and down the wings would have been the best position.

Nice stuff. You should look into what happened to Falcão, a legend of Futsal, when he signed for São Paulo to play as their #10, some 20 years ago. He was already in the late stages of his career in Futsal but he was never given chances by the manager at the time (Emerson Leão) because he was signed by the president of the club without the consent of the manager. Said manager was also very famous for being a "Agent's Manager" in the sense that if you wanted space on his teams then you needed to be part of his agent's footballing organisation. It's quite the interesting story of how Brazil could've had yet another Ballon D'or contender in a time when they had Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, and Kaká all on the same national squad at the same time.

I'm surprised by comments calling this video harsh. It's not at all. The guy had opportunities that young and upcoming players, who've played their whole lives at a high level and gone through the academy, will never get. It disrespects the sport.
Blaming the country and league that gave him a chance, instead of admitting he wasn't good enough, is laughable. "The level wasn't good enough"? GTFOH. He deserves the criticism. Saying, "I didn't want to stay in Europe because of the media" sounds like another excuse to hide the fact that he was simply... sh*t. The reality is he knew he wasn't good enough but self-belief can take a man very far and places they dont belong. Connections and money over skills.
This whole thing could've stayed as a marketing stunt, but he genuinely believed he had the skills for professional leagues worldwide. No one had an issue with him taking those chances and trying. Give it a crack but be man, admit you failed because you weren't good enough and dont go blaming quality of the league that gave you a chance. He doesn't stand a chance in the junior leagues of Australia, San Marino, Fiji or Greenland let alone professional leagues anywhere in the world.

He definitely would have got a contract from the Saudi league if he was doing this now. They could have given him the money he wanted, would have been a high profile signing for the Saudi's to promote the league and the standard of football is pretty low so he could have gotten some game time and probably scored a few goals.

I don't watch either sport (athletics or futbol), but I knew he was doing it for fun. I don't know what it is with European futbol fans, but when you have a sport as popular as soccer is, there are just gonna be some people that come in who are not gonna take the sport as seriously.
Because there are people that have trained for 10+ from the 6 year age to 16-17 and still didn't make it. So Bolt wanted to reach that within a year

I haven’t seen anyone make 1.25 million or more. So effectively he was at the level of MAYBE and I mean MAYBE a reserve or b squad player but was asking for playing time and to be paid about 3x more than the highest player in the league. The problem is that ultimate, Bolt as a footballer is a pace merchant. His not got any real technical ability. His only strengths are pace and physicial strength.
The problem is that his greatest strength is is 30-100 pace. His 0-30 metre pace is .. its obviously very good, but its not better then everyone else ever. There are many people faster then him over 30 metres. At that distance, his just a very good athelete. But then, so are most footballers.
The problem when pace is your only winning attribute, is that its easy to defend against because you can just drop deep. The only way you can utilise him is to put a ball over the top or through the lines. But unless the other team is defending on the half way line... Bolt isn't going to be able to massively outpace them and any advantage he does gain is quickly caught back up by his complete lack of first touch.
Honestly, his style of pace and his physicial strength mean he would have been far better suited to playing as defender. Kyle Walker actually has a similar style of pace, he actually often gets beaten on the initial acceleration, but is able to catch them by the end because he keeps getting faster. But I don't think Bolt would have had any interest in playing in defence.
I think it's an overstatement. Let's be real, it's incredible that he even could do anything... Like, first thing, he was already out of shape... Like, he was old, and he retired from track and field for good reasons. It is a good thing that he didn't accept the contract, because he'd get some nasty injuries eventually, and that would really suck. Btw, I have nothing against the facts you stated, except one thing. Sprinters have way faster acceleration and explosive movement, the fastest soccer player is very unlikely to be in front of a top sprinter for a single meter of a 100m race. Of course that there are huge issues still, specially endurance, which sprinters obviously don't need and that would impede them from showcasing such speeds, and the fact that they can't possibly control the ball or change direction. But I think you're highly underestimating Bolt's speed, his start looks slow because the other ones are just so fast, but even him is so much more explosive and has higher acceleration that any "soccer player"... His acceleration is faster than even NFL players, which are notably agile in that regard... I know it's kinda hard to imagine, but believe me, guys like Sun Bingtian are just specially explosive out of the block, and he can hit his top speed insanely fast... The issue with Bolt is that he was out of shape, risking injury and too old, and that soccer is a difficult sport to get into and a sport that isn't actually as fit for a sprinter as some want to believe. If he really tried to he could probably be a good soccer player, but he had to sacrifice his carreer in track when he was younger, which would be hella dumb and plain sad.
Pace in a raw form is enough to get a lot of players ahead.
Not at an elite level but League 1 or League 2 could easily be taken on pace.

I would say even less than that, Vanarama south/north already has lightning fast players who can’t depend on pace alone. The amount of skill even in “lower” leagues is deceptive. Tier 5 on the English pyramid has more talent that most countries top flight.

I did feel it was a bit of an insult to anyone who was a professional footballer when Bolt was training with top level clubs. All those professional footballers who they’d just take one look at his age and not even invite for a trial. Yet Bolt with no professional football experience is given the chance. Although ultimate and inevitability it comes to nothing. He doesn’t even look EPL League 2 level, yet 2:34 here he is.
Just doing the maths about 7:30 even in the EFL Championship you’d be lucky if you get the £30k+ a week he wanted. His actual wage based on his level would be below £1000 a week mid-low EFL League 2 at absolute best, and even then he would likely struggle below that at National League Level, so at a push would be National League North/South so closing in on semi-pro.
Maybe in 4023 he might be worth what he’s asking. But nobody in there right mind is going to be offering him what he wanted.
During his time in Australia, Usian Bolt also had a marketing deal with Optus. His face was everywhere at the time but nobody here was that hyped over him nor did he improve profits for Optus. Australia doesn't get as hyped about celebrities as a lot of other countries do. He wasn't going to convince anybody who didn't already love Soccer/Football to attend matches. A-League attendances are pretty small compared to AFL, Rugby or Cricket. Soccer is like the fifth or sixth most popular sport here and most have no interest in the A-League even hardcore Soccer fans. He wasn't gonna draw in the crowds to a level that justifies 3 million. He was only offered the trial at Central Coast Mariners as a publicity stunt but still gave him opportunity to prove he was more than just a publicity stunt. He only trained when the cameras were on him otherwise he'd just leave. It's very clear that he was just about the attention of it and not serious at all about being a professional player.
You have to have incredible passion for the game almost like you couldn’t really do anything else. Running at top speed might only happen for about 15% of a football game, and prob over a much shorter distance. Football is more about acceleration and agility rather than top speed.
I still think Man United missed a trick here. I think it was after the London Olympics where Bolt was going around saying he wanted to play for Man United, but obviously United clearly weren't interested, but considering the hype around Bolt and the Olympics at that time, especially with the Olympics being held in this country, Man United could (and probably should) have set up a one-off charity match for Bolt to play for them.
There would have been a ton of media hype surrounding the match, they could have got a load of retired Man United legends to play, Bolt would've got his wish to play for them at Old Trafford, and they could have made a boat load of cash for charity. It would have been a win-win for everyone, but for some reason United didn't even seem interested in doing that either! I don't know why. It's not like they don't do legends charity matches already!
