They were absolutely stellar in Northampton, I was stunned by the fact that if anything Pete's voice has got better with age. Well done gentlemen, and thank you.
I'm in a time warp - took me back to early 80's. They were great.......but imagine if Kevin & Danny had showed up in their hometown. That would have been stunning.
I consider Murphy to have become a parody of his former self. If anything he seems to have become less confident with age, of his singing voice. Have a listen to his re-recording of My last 2 weeks on his Dust album.
It must have been fun to perform those iconic first three notes of "Bella Legosi's Dead." I hope you read this, as I recently had a heart attack, hummed "Bella" and laughed my way through the stent while seeing it on the screen. It was perfect. I laughed my way through it.
I met both Peter and David when they were in Australia and he spoke of his love of the new young fans with two who would have been about 20. It was clear how happy it made him to see them there. Also got my '79 white vinyl signed by them both, it was a brilliant concert. Couldn't wipe the smile off this old bat's face all night.
I saw him with Love and Rockets in 86, in L.A, open for Siouxsie... he got upset at someone in the crowd, by the stage... he said.. act your age and not your shoe size!.. lol such an English Gentleman
@@CMZIEBARTH ..I didnt see L&Rs ,but saw Bauhaus a few times & cant remember him ever losing his cool ...i felt him & kevin H were a very underrated rhythm section.
I’ve never thought about reggae influences for Bauhaus before David J mentioned. Strange, I’ve listened them constantly since 1982., and never thought about it. Ok, Harry track is reggae style of course. Who could immagine reggae will be a bedrcok for Goth!? :-)
If you listen to She's in Parties and pay attention to the electric guitar sound you will recognize some kind of reggae influence on it, especially in the part when Peter Murphy starts to sing "Hot lines under a rain of drums, cigarette props in action..."
Great interview from Dave...still got a dole slip which he wrote his name and address on back in 1979. Never did get around to sending that C90 tape to you of the band practicing in the portakabins at the back of Nene College Park Campus in 1978. Still got it somewhere in the garage among all the stuff you accumulate over a lifetime.
@@bluedrinks1 ...Yeah some dude's been chasing it. He collects loads of Bauhaus stuff and I've said he can have it if I come across it again. Dave said Bela was written in 1978 and so was Dark Entries. Two great classics to write so early on. There was a track on that tape with Pete singing 'Love Life' L..L..L..L ..L ..L ...Love Life...don't think it ever got to vinyl. It was a defining moment watching them play their first gig at Nene College in late 1978. It felt very fresh and new ! Shame the main media never really got it and it hampered them at the time and didn't give them the credit they deserved. But quality will always float to the top and their contribution to music is carved into the art form and people are still discovering them and being influenced by them today....bloody hell though the years roll on by don't they !
my eternal gratitude for playing in Sydney, Australia. It meant an awful lot to me - thank you so so so SO MUCH. It was probably distinctly advantageous to see & hear them at 50 rather than in my teens. I probably wouldn't have remembered much of it had I seen Bauhaus back in those messy days
Such a great interview. In the late 70s in troubled Boston, being a punk, mod young record buyer. We would go to reggae clubs, and as long as ya were there for the education and wonderful tunes. No one gave ya trouble.White kid, punk rasta ok.Western front in cambridge.
I used to drive around in me old VW cabriolet Jammimg Earth, Sun, Moon. Every album got better and better and then Lyft came out. It was my #1 for a decade! I saw you guys at 1st Avenue for that album and picked up an old drum skin outside after the show. I can't remember the band that opened for you guys, but I remember that they joined you on stage for an encore. It was "Beautiful"!
Had the absoloute please of seeing you guys play in 'max watts' in Melbourne Australia..i have followed you since leaving school in the 80's omg,no one has ever come close..
Bauhaus has never been purely Goth for me. They are capable of comedy and brightness. I do not think of them as say, Christian Death or a band of that ilk. My favorite band ever! They painted with many colors
No one called it that at the time, it was more of a dismissive term used by lazy music journalists, Indy, Alternative, maybe even art school Punk (more lazy music journalists) mostly until later when the term did stick.
Good work! What I enjoyed most about this interview, is the physical absence of the interviewee in the video. Way too many times these days, you will have some kid interviewing a noted musician on camera, where the interviewee believes it's all about themselves and their "association" with the subject; therefore, actually making it not about the subject, but about themselves. Again, good pro-job!
For years I have been trying to tell friends the backing to 'Bela...' is very sound system/dub inspired - I thought particularly by Keith Hudson 'pick a dub' lp & Skin ,Flesh & Bones... Errol 'flabba' Holt was the Bassist in Roots Radics - check out the various early 80s 'Scientist lps' recordings...for some of the best.
Bauhaus inspired me so I had to form a band in Nottingham and worked with mood indigo Steve Pinnock but worked as affliction furnace in 1988/9/2000 and my hourly rate is twenty five to forty as a music biz consultant Jesus Christ 😂 may Claire Louise Steele's work with me more
I saw Bauhaus supporting someone back in the early 80's. And I thought they were way to out there for my liking. But now, 50 years later, I'm getting into them.
He IS the bassist from Love and Rockets. Bauhaus deconstructed into Tones on Tail and then Love and Rockets all without Peter Murphy who pursued a solo career after Bauhaus.
@@FlynntandSteel ...yeah Peter 'pursued a solo career '...but didnt get one.. after the slightly miserable finish of Bauhaus ,Love & Rockets really sounded like they were enjoying themselves again
i'm too lazy to search, but is it just folklore, or a fanciful anecdote that during the recording of bela, the band members were 'chased' out of the studio by demons?
In 'Who Killed Mr Moonlight' David J called Peter Murphy an 'insufferable prick'. I wonder how much cash was required to make him a 'sufferable prick'? I would dearly like this answered but until that time I have lost a fair bit of respect for David J as it seems the whole reason for the 40th tour is cash related, especially as he received second billing 'featuring David J', when DJ should have been on equal terms with the egotistical, rose-spitting one.
Well maybe he IS an insufferable prick... but maybe he too is a great singer, performer, writer... Artists tend to be not the easiest people... but also interesting ones.
I completely agree with David, Bauhaus's music exist outside of time it occupies it's own unique space and I love it.
Goth is a label so that stupid people can file it away. Bauhaus is bauhaus. Goth is everyone that tried to imitate them.
Great interview, man has aged extremely well, and so has the music. Bela Legosi is one of the best dub reggae songs of all time, timeless infact.

Yeah dub and reggae...if you listen to She's in Parties for example, that influence is obvious

Similar to how the blues influenced Depeche Mode and James Brown influenced Cabaret Voltaire.

What's funny is that Bauhaus was, or was considered fringe music, and now their as popular as ever, shows how ahead of their time that they were.
