I still have my very battered copy that I carried with me through many life moments starting in high school and obsessively watch the movie with Anthony Andrews at least twice a year. Name of the wind is my favorite book of all time. There is nothing truly like it. I recommend it to every single person. I also gift is around Christmas time every year
Some of those are my favorites too! The Wolf sounds like one I'd like. I have very recently DNF' ed Red Rising. But maybe it is worth revisiting if the next book is so good.

Just wanted to let you know that I bought Radiance on your recommendation and I LOVED it. As a couple, Ildiko and Brishen are too adorable for words! There is SO much respect between them, and it's so well crafted in just the small affections used to show it. There's no insta-lust, but a gentle, well-paced change in their perception of each other. One of my favourite moments is when they're talking about their first sexual experiences, and Brishen begins to imagine her as a sexual being despite her humanity, and it arouses him. You just see everything click. He wants to offer her something better, something worthy of her quality as a person to replace that lackluster memory. It's this desire to first give emotionally, from both of them, that makes their openness and everything else so endearing and believable. And the weaponization of eye-crossing ... too funny! I wish it wasn't so short. I want just more of them together, and certainly more shredded bed linens, lol! I haven't read the follow up, and I can see how the epilogue feels tacked on. His mother's death was sort of annoying b/c you REALLY want her to die in a much more personal way. It's not that the way she died wasn't entirely probably (hubris and black magic never mix) it just wasn't satisfying. Especially after she returns "the gift" she was sent after his abduction. OH BITCH! Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for the recommendation, and for shining a light on this lovely indie gem!

First time watcher, so thanks for explaining The Wolf. Btw, you might want to check out Harry Harrison's West of Eden series. I feel like I am hearing myself talk about West of Eden, when you talk about The Wolf. It is similar, in that another sentient species evolves on Earth but set MUCH earlier. Basically, no meteor killed the dinosaur's and they are already a developed species when us humans come along. It's is terribly old and probably won't get you any views, but is really good and thought provoking. It's from the 80's, from a guy that got famous from a fairly basic/funny sci-fi series in the 60's. This and The Hammer and the Cross series are his best and nothing like his beginning works. Best underated/unknown series.
Interesting list. I think, I will give 'a little hatred' and 'the wolf' a try. On my top 3 - list would be : The first 2 Farseer - Trlogies by Robin Hobb. I really love this books and can not narrow them down to one book. Then there is 'the warded man' by Peter V. Brett wich created a big and fascinating word, the evolved throughout the books. And then it has to be Lord of the Rings...

Great choices. I've read and enjoyed most of them. My personal SF&F favorites: Zelazny's Lord of Light. Robert Graves' Hercules, My Shipmate. Walter Miller's A Canticle for Leibowitz. Iain Banks' Consider Phlebas. And a dozen more. I guess my definition of favorite is pretty broad.
I need to read The Name of the Wind. I've been interested in it but I guess I was sort of waiting for some news of the third book... I read Red Rising maybe 4 years ago or so. I liked it but then I think I took too long to pick up Golden Son and now I need to reread RR. I recently have been making lists about what I think my top 30 books are. A lot of them I've only read once and I've been toying with the idea of rereading a lot of them to see if they do indeed stand the test of time and remain on my favorites list.

See if you really *need* to read The Name of the Wind ... It's a beautifully written male wish fulfilment fantasy on steroids, which works for some people, but I just found the Gary Stu protagonist and casual sexism unbearable :/
I had a similar experience with the Kingkiller books. I worked at a bookstore years ago and picked it up randomly one time never having heard of it. Loved it. Everyone I recommend it to did too, which were many. Losing hope a little on a third coming out, but it's one of my all time favs too. I also bought Lies of Locke Lamora back then but have never gotten to it cuz I am kind of afraid I won't like it as much as I hope.

Great list. The Ocean at the End of the Lane is my favorite Gaiman book too, but I didn't know about that cool backstory. I really want to read The Name of the Wind, but I'm afraid to start a series that has been on hiatus for so long. Still working towards A Little Hatred - can’t wait, but still can’t see how Abercrombie can possibly top BSC. Wolf & Spider are utterly fantastic. Locke & NotW are decent but I think the prose in both books stumbles a little in places. 6 of Crows could’ve been brilliant but I found the characters really annoying & too YA for my tastes. Gaiman is a fucking living legend - enough said. Pan is cool but is it really that good? Was really hoping The Way of Kings had made it on to your list🤣🤣🤣

I enjoyed Wise Man’s Fear because it expanded the world and lore but I do think Name is a better book As for Red Rising I think Pierce Brown’s writing just gets better and better - Dark Age totally blew me away 🤯 I just finished my fourth read of The Wolf so I hope you like it 😌

I was hesitant to to get into the new trilogy since I felt Morningstar ended so wonderfully, but i agree. I'm really really hoping he pulls the ending of the econd trilogy off as well.
Peeped your Goodreads after you mentioned this was the video you'd recorded, so I'd been wondering if you'd go with 'American Gods' over 'Ocean.' Should've known you'd make the right call. There's not a single misstep or wasted moment in 'Ocean.' And holy shit, talk about nailing the ending. Given how razor-like the book is, all of that good work would've been for naught if the ending were anything less than perfect. ("One Life, Furnished in Early Moorcock" is my favorite Gaiman short story [and possibly my favorite short story, period], and I suppose it's no coincidence it's also somewhat autobiographical.) Obligatory favorite book response: 'The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay.' The way you feel about Rothfuss's prose is the way I feel about Chabon's. Just dazzling stuff. Reading it was the only way I managed to keep my sanity during a boring-ass business trip to Fort Worth.

I adore Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind. In fact, the entire Sword of Truth series is excellent. He has some views that are out there, but then again, don't we all? Also, if you love Neil Gaiman, Clive Barker is an even better writer of fantasy/horror and "weird fantasy." And that is coming from a Gaiman lover. Two of my favorites from Clive are Weaveworld and Imajica. The way I would describe Imajica is that it is the sickest, most demented, poignant, most beautiful book I have ever read. The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant is another favorite fantasy series of mine. It laid the groundwork for many fantasy series that came after it.

Interesting list, I will be checking out a few of these :) The Wolf sounds like something I would like, Lies of Locke Lamora are on my shelf I just need to get to it. I am surprised about A Little Hatred, I think it was my least fav book of Abercrombie, I like the moving the world in a new age of technology part, but a lot of the characters felt like more bland versions of his greatest hits and more naive than his world should allow them to be. Also not a big fan of “I see the future” bit, still a great book, I was just a bit disappointed when I read it. Some of my all time fav are: Small Gods, Assassin's Apprentice, The Blade Itself , Red Country, Da Vinci Code, maybe Name of the Wind(would have to reread it, remember reading it fast bc it was a page turner but also that it left me frustrated in some parts), The Dark Elf Trilogy (The books that got me into fantasy, it's been 18 years soooo...). Great vid as always :)
Interesting but apart from Ivanhoe I read nothing else from your list. My fav all time book is Master and Margarita” written by a Russian writer Mikhail Bulghakov. A bit hard to describe - it started as a black comedy. Satan visiting Moscow in 1920s. Obvious potential for satire. Then somewhere along the line that book liberates itself (and reader). In the end it is like looking at night sky somewhere in the desert. You cannot put in words. Nothing comes close.
@@LienesLibrary Give it a try. Couple comments - there is older translation by Mira Ginsburg which is good but was based on a version of book censored by Soviet censors. Most modern translations are good. For example one by Richard Pevear. Bulghakov’s father was a professor of theology specializing in early Gnostic movements where Darkness and Light formed to complementary parts of the world. To some extent it reflects in the book - even though it is not religious in the slightest. Just the theme of unforgivable transgression of betrayal. Very obvious in Soviet reality. PS. One more thing. Russian way of formal addressing people is by first name and name of father - Grigori Ivanovich, Vera Ivanovna etc. That element often confuses people tackling Russian books.

Peter Pan?! Like you? I was obsessed with the story before even having read it. However, after reading it I was horrified I ever liked the idea of it. ~~~SPOILERS~~~ Wendy straight up had a daughter and allows Peter to kidnap her so she can be used as a domestic servant?! No.

The reason I stopped after Red Rising was because I couldn't stand Darrow. He was so selfish and arrogant and also became perfect at everything. Does this change in the next books?
I felt similar after reading Red Rising I just didn’t feel motivated to pick up book two. perhaps now I will go ahead and pick up ‘Golden Son’ soonish. I want to know what humbles Darrow. (don’t tell me though.)
My top three books of all time are Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, the Beautiful Monsters series by Jex Lane (it's a weird one but damn does it get me), and The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet

I really want to read The Name of the Wind, but I'm afraid to start a series that has been on hiatus for so long. I've heard some people say that it's so good it's worthwhile to read even as a standalone, would you agree with that? Thanks!

Still working towards A Little Hatred - can’t wait, but still can’t see how Abercrombie can possibly top BSC. Wolf & Spider are utterly fantastic. Locke & NotW are decent but I think the prose in both books stumbles a little in places. 6 of Crows could’ve been brilliant but I found the characters really annoying & too YA for my tastes. Gaiman is a fucking living legend - enough said. Pan is cool but is it really that good?

I just found your channel, and our tastes are very similar with what we have both read. What do you think of Wise Man's Fear or the rest of Red Rising? I'll definitely look into the Wolf, and I have A Little Hatred queued in audible.
I enjoyed Wise Man’s Fear because it expanded the world and lore but I do think Name is a better book
As for Red Rising I think Pierce Brown’s writing just gets better and better - Dark Age totally blew me away 🤯

I was hesitant to to get into the new trilogy since I felt Morningstar ended so wonderfully, but i agree. I'm really really hoping he pulls the ending of the econd trilogy off as well.

Peeped your Goodreads after you mentioned this was the video you'd recorded, so I'd been wondering if you'd go with 'American Gods' over 'Ocean.' Should've known you'd make the right call. There's not a single misstep or wasted moment in 'Ocean.' And holy shit, talk about nailing the ending. Given how razor-like the book is, all of that good work would've been for naught if the ending were anything less than perfect. ("One Life, Furnished in Early Moorcock" is my favorite Gaiman short story [and possibly my favorite short story, period], and I suppose it's no coincidence it's also somewhat autobiographical.)
Obligatory favorite book response: 'The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay.' The way you feel about Rothfuss's prose is the way I feel about Chabon's. Just dazzling stuff. Reading it was the only way I managed to keep my sanity during a boring-ass business trip to Fort Worth.
oh man I haven't updated my Goodreads in years, I pretty much just use it to keep track of how many books I read each year - I honestly couldn't tell you what's listed there as a fave, but I can tell you it's definitely wrong 🤣

I adore Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind. In fact, the entire Sword of Truth series is excellent. He has some views that are out there, but then again, don't we all? Also, if you love Neil Gaiman, Clive Barker is an even better writer of fantasy/horror and "weird fantasy." And that is coming from a Gaiman lover. Two of my favorites from Clive are Weaveworld and Imajica. The way I would describe Imajica is that it is the sickest, most demented, poignant, most beautiful book I have ever read. The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant is another favorite fantasy series of mine. It laid the groundwork for many fantasy series that came after it.

Interesting list, I will be checking out a few of these :) The Wolf sounds like something I would like, Lies of Locke Lamora are on my shelf I just need to get to it. I am surprised about A Little Hatred, I think it was my least fav book of Abercrombie, I like the moving the world in a new age of technology part, but a lot of the characters felt like more bland versions of his greatest hits and more naive than his world should allow them to be. Also not a big fan of “I see the future” bit, still a great book, I was just a bit disappointed when I read it.
Some of my all time fav are: Small Gods, Assassin's Apprentice, The Blade Itself , Red Country, Da Vinci Code, maybe Name of the Wind(would have to reread it, remember reading it fast bc it was a page turner but also that it left me frustrated in some parts), The Dark Elf Trilogy (The books that got me into fantasy, it's been 18 years soooo...).

Interesting but apart from Ivanhoe I read nothing else from your list. My fav all time book is Master and Margarita” written by a Russian writer Mikhail Bulghakov. A bit hard to describe - it started as a black comedy. Satan visiting Moscow in 1920s. Obvious potential for satire. Then somewhere along the line that book liberates itself (and reader). In the end it is like looking at night sky somewhere in the desert. You cannot put in words. Nothing comes close.

@@LienesLibrary Give it a try. Couple comments - there is older translation by Mira Ginsburg which is good but was based on a version of book censored by Soviet censors. Most modern translations are good. For example one by Richard Pevear. Bulghakov’s father was a professor of theology specializing in early Gnostic movements where Darkness and Light formed to complementary parts of the world. To some extent it reflects in the book - even though it is not religious in the slightest. Just the theme of unforgivable transgression of betrayal. Very obvious in Soviet reality.
PS. One more thing. Russian way of formal addressing people is by first name and name of father - Grigori Ivanovich, Vera Ivanovna etc. That element often confuses people tackling Russian books.

The reason I stopped after Red Rising was because I couldn't stand Darrow. He was so selfish and arrogant and also became perfect at everything. Does this change in the next books?
it does - Darrow's pays a heavy price for his arrogance and is pretty dramatically humbled

I felt similar after reading Red Rising I just didn’t feel motivated to pick up book two. perhaps now I will go ahead and pick up ‘Golden Son’ soonish. I want to know what humbles Darrow. (don’t tell me though.)
