this sketch actually sends a great message. if superheroes exist, they don't owe us anything, they save the day by their choice and they don't have to if they need a day off. be a superhero and take a day off if you need one, its not selfish to keep yourself healthy.
Does it send a great message? It might've been if he hadn't been there while something bad was happening right in front of him and chose to do nothing. If he was at home or the Fortress of Solitude or just on vacation then he could do whatever and that would be cool. If you meant to say that everyone deserves some time to take care of themselves first then yeah, that's great, but that wasn't really shown here for comedic reasons. 😵
But let me guess, you think humans owe it to society to "contribute" to it by working, even though that means nothing more than working away their lives to make someone else rich?
"I need to save me before I can save the world" "You can't take care of your enemies if you don't take care of yourself." Basically the same concept, huh? Both are very true and very useful. Thank you Studio C/JK! Studios! Entertaining and brilliant/wise!
You know what's actually really sad? Most of the excuses Superman gives for not stopping the robber are actual stupid reasons that people in superhero comics and movies give for not liking superheroes. Security Guard = Police and opposition to vigilantism Bank Robberies happen everyday = Saying Superheros are unnecessary and that they just complicate problems that already happen all the time. Or that Superheroes are ineffective and shouldn't exist if they can't solve every problem. "Oceans 11" Situation = People foolishly justifying the villain even though he is clearly in the wrong "Give a Mouse a Cookie" Situation = Superheroes will lead to crime escalation and more villains who seek to defeat the hero "Media Showing Up" = Hero is only doing it to look good. Frankly, I don't think any of these arguments are valid and this skit does a pretty good job of showing why. If you have the power, you have a responsibly to use those powers to help people. All you can do is as much good as you can and it's everyone else's problems for criticizing you for simply helping people. It's 100% true that all it takes for evil to win is the good men doing nothing.
The main counter is the supervillians only appear once the superhero makes himself known. There seems to be a direct cause-and-effect relationship between the two.
