Joe, you couldn’t have asked any more perfect questions. The same I would ask any musician of songs I love… as a musician/ song writer/ producer myself, it always interests me to know others writing process. Prince used the same setup and instruments in every song, in order to keep the creative juices flowing without interruption. Which is the best way any musician can write. Clear the path, so that its easier to walk it. Meaning, get all of the technical aspects out of the way, so that it allows complete creative freedom when writing the song.
Don’t put anything in the way, to block that mental path to creative nirvana. And as Anthony said… “No rules”. Don’t limit your creative prospects in order to fit a genre. Take what comes out and make the best of what it is. Don’t force it to be what its not meant to be. And most of all, have fun.
Once you uncuff yourself from the technical constraints that will kill creativity, your mind is free to accept those lightning bolts of ideas that may end up being your Sasquatch or Lochness Monster. Your one hit wonder or one of many to come. Which is why I think that so many one-hit wonder artists are made and disappear. If your mind isn’t free to accept the gifts that become your songs, you will be stuck in creative limbo until it is… and if you are a creative… Always carry around something to record those ideas when they happen. Because those who know, will tell you that as quickly as those ideas come to mind… They disappear.
