great analysis! as an Asian American I found this movie very accurate in depicting the difference between Chinese and American culture. Love to see one of my fav channels give such an impassioned video about it.
Definitely very accurate. I’m from Hong Kong, but I’ve lived in the United Kingdom for 3 years. Sometimes I see old people travel alone here, and similar as in the tube for anyone in London, loneliness is something I experience quite often. since some of my extended family is here as well, the weekly Saturday gathering of the extended family is a direct juxtaposition for me here in England. Yet, since my extended family’s here, there’s no ‘going back to China’ as in the film for me. It’s more like if I’m choosing one culture over another for my future kids, regardless of family, and this is a very important decision as this culture carries with you through your whole life as seen from the loneliness of old people. P.S. if Mexico has this experience as well (which is more insane than in China with 70+ people in a block), that means it’s not a just an east vs west culture. I think it could be more of an Anglo-American culture.
Also, for example, my dad still works in Hong Kong, and I learnt a lot from my uncle over these 3 years. if my family didn’t retain this culture of extended family, I don’t know what would have happened to me. This is the weakness of nuclear family, since the seniors of the family is only sustained by 2 people ( the mother and the father), if one of them fails this role (e.g. divorce) the other would be affected greatly, and so would the kids. On the other hand, in a village, there’s more failsafe for children. (Would you trust your child with your brother or cousin or the babysitting centre?) P.S I feel like any Asian-western person can write a whole article on this, I know I can.
Isn't this more of an argument against nursing homes in the US? and/or an argument for lying among families? I don't really see how the nuclear family comes into play? Also, I don't believe the ends ever justify the means, so I don't think lying in any type of relationship is good.
@@RockBridgeIsland Yeah, I asked because my finace from Colombia said she had never heard of a nursing home when she arrived in the US when she was 25. And we had an interesting conversation about the two different cultures. So I know her mom may live with us for large portions of time, but I'm totally ok with that, because I love both of them :)
I think some of it is cultural difference. My family? There’s the constant saying of saving face (that got mistranslated as honor forever ago) and not burdening others. Group comes first. If you are unable to fix something yourself, then your family will be there and will understand.
I’m so glad someone finally talked about this. The nuclear family is an American tradition. “It takes a village” has been a saying for a reason.
It's an interesting take on this flim on how you view family and how family sld act or do morally in a family and it's interesting.

Favorite film of 2019! Lulu Wang is amazing! 😊 I am glad you got a chance to watch.
This movie reminded me of my family soooo much. I loved it.
I liked how you used the movie as a framing device for something bigger.
hey, thanks. I'm glad you commented, I'm catching up on the last year of essays you've posted. So good.
@@RockBridgeIsland thanks, I'm looking forward to more essay from you
Masterful video! Your voice is so good for narration!
Hey thanks, v. 😊

love this, was doing a research project on the nuclear family, this answered all my questions
I love your channel

I would say that's definitely one of the most urgent practical takeaways of this!

@@JBles825 oh wow that is a beautiful story. The idea of a nursing home must be VERY unusual if you aren't accustomed to it.

the traditional family is not a myth... the family as Americans know it, stems from Judeo/Christian culture in other words the West.
