This is easily the best comprehensive historical summary of offshore performance i have seen on youtube. I've spent my whole life on the water and worked as a marine mechanic for a period. I would love to see a series discussing the history of specific engine and drive systems as well as the companies that developed them. The Mercruiser TRS and Alpha/Bravo drives for example, or perhaps a video on companies like Ilmor, Imco, OMC, etc.
In 1979, i was fortunate to witness the big class 1 boats when they came to Melbourne Australia for the world titles. I was also fortunate to actually meet Betty Cook, who my mother had befriended. Betty was well in her 50's back then, and i was amazed that a 'Grandmother' was racing big loud offshore boats: she was a down to earth and friendly lady. Hello from Australia.
Fabio Buzzi was my hero. A true gentleman of the sport. Innovative ahead of his time boat design. I remember our last conversation during KeyWest World Championships his last trip to US for this event he was dismayed with the unfortunate decisions division in the sport late 80’s early 90’s planned focus on European offshore racing much more supportive sponsored organized operation. The racing has remained true offshore racing. The Italians truly support offshore racing.
My grandfather had a 1972 28' Bertram named "C' Treasure", twin inboards powered by built Ford 351 Clevelands making 400hp each. That deep V hull would rock alot if you go the waves from the side. But hitting waves head on? It would absolutely bust through heavy seas at full speed like it was nothing. I miss that boat.
Absolutely loves this and well done!! Got a great chuckle out of the inclusion of that 43’ donzi going head on into the monster surf off San Fran…the hull did not survive that drop and cracked in half
We've definitely got it easy today. Back then, finding a valve train that could survive 6 grand for hours or a drive and prop that could go from air to water WO snapping wasn't just a card number away. The old boat packed full of two stroke Mercs inboard was sweet. Not really practical but pretty sure I'd have been that guy if I was in the game then.
I spent a day on 188th Street in about 1998ish, when it was still big boat companies and probably a lot of white powder. WOW! What a time to be in the boat business....
This is by far one of "The Craziest" ideas by mankind. Insane but I love it. You are most alive when standing at the precipice looking death in the eye saying "Not today!"
Growing up on the Mississippi River and close to LOTO, I've been in 9.9hp to 1k hp boats. I worked for a marina and got to work on a scarab with a Tyler Crockett race engine. Never got to open it up, but at 50% throttle, we hit 100mph/99.58mph and we were out of river lol. I'd love to be able to go out in a 40' with 1k N/A hp engine.
My high performance boating experience started during the Golden Age which was a glorious time for the sport. The modern racers may be faster with higher tech but watching the glamour boys vs Gentry and Reggie vs the likes of Los Muchachos and Ben Kramer was some sort of spectacle. Great video!
Offshore was still offshore big difference. I think we were present for the glory years of race sights boat design racers &crew . Miss all blessed to have been there . Best experience of a lifetime. No regrets. RIP to those lost to the power of speed & ocean desire to win.💯💔🙏🏾🏁🏁🇺🇸🔥🔥🔥
@@vehiculemagazine I hope you didn't take me as a smart mouth. The announcer was so close to saying the proper thing. Open- No radiator, uses whatever water you are running in. If that's the ocean, you should flush the cooling system after each use. Closed- Radiator, can run in saltwater all day with no concerns about salt corrosion. I think all of these go-fast boats ran open systems. Even though they ran in seawater.
Superchargers over Turbochargers every day. I've never understood the appeal of recirculation exhaust fumes back into an engine when it's been the tried and true "cold air intake" that works the best. Cold air has more surface area that hot air. Thus, more oxygen.
You think a turbo recirculates exhaust fumes into the engine? And you think a supercharger gets lower temperatures at same boost? There is a single reason to pick superchargers over turbochargers... And its throttle response. In any other metric, turbos are superior.
Drag racing was born from moonshiners outrunning the police. Offshore power boat racing is born from smuggling. Obviously huge amounts of money are involved in those operations. Which allowed the design and building of high performance vehicles. Mickey Munday talks at length about the development of the cigarette boats in cocaine cowboys. They had that long nose to allow a ton of "ballast" in the front of the boat.
You should look into the Super Fountain power boat. It is a Skater Fountain hull with twin jet engine drives currently in the power boat record circuit
Such good videos. Im a noob to the subject so these are very nice to get a quick run down on who is who. Got interested in this world thanks to Don Aronows brands.
Great video on the Great video on the VH and how it changed racing. I was very lucky Ritchie Sutphen out of New Jersey designed the PT boats used in World War II. They were extremely effective his son Ritchie Sutton Junior designed my Sutfin boat. It was a 33 footer with twin 750 hp motors , it could just about 90 miles an hour. I raced it for about 15 years and kept it for 25 years. Unfortunately a bunch of drug runners got into offshore racing. They would go out at night with their offshore boats and pick up loads of cocaine off the Florida coast, they had tons of money people like Ben Kramer in the light so much money they kept getting bigger and more expensive boats to the point where my sponsors want nothing to do with this illegal system sponsors dropped out, and that was basically the end of normal offshore racing continue to exist with the design of catamarans, which is the dumbest design in the world It's a boat that can stuff very easily. Can't turn well and can't handle rough water but it can go about 15 to 20 miles an hour faster than a v hull so because they couldn't handle rough water, they brought the offshore racing insure I mean, sometimes they would literally be 100 feet off the shore where the water was flat. It was absurd. I stopped racing and a lot of other people you need to have millions of dollars to compete with these catamaranin insure racing none of the insurance companies or promotional companies want anything to do with this nonsense so the Sport kind of died
Had a 28 ft burtrum haul 9 ft beam 3 ft gunny wells 1968 just haul 2 240 yamaha out boards tuna tower etc trim tabs out ran pt boat from Mexico with 80 mm cannon

The static lines and jumping picture courtesy of old VHS tapes. That alone brings back memories.
I’d enjoy seeing a renaissance of this sport. I grew up in Seattle watching the sea fair hydroplane races.
sea fair, so cool should we do a film on hydroplanes?
