    I went to the imperial palace last week! they allowed my family to join the tour even though we didn't book online

    • @RohanGillett
      @RohanGillett 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Actually you haven't had to book online for some time now. Nowadays you just turn up and do the tour. If I remember correctly I think they accept about 200 people on a first-come first-served basis.

      +Rohan Gillett Yeah, we had around 200 people in our tour group... "First come, first served".

      Thank you! I really appreciate it! I'm still working on finishing up my schooling before I make the move, so It'll still be a while before I start making my main videos from within Japan haha. Though I will probably do some introductory videos in the coming months just to get things rolling.

    Wow, great video! I came across your channel a few months back due to your great bicycling japan documentary. I subscribed so I could watch the rest of your videos, and was able to see a few before they were all taken down. Now I see why! I love the new show, I've been looking for some high quality tourism videos and I think this new one is great! It's very professional and the video quality is fantastic. Glad to see your making videos again. Does this mean you're back in Japan?

    Did you get some kind of camera stabilizer? Did you use the Nikon for the whole shoot? What was the phone controlled camera at the end?

    • @HappyInJapan
      @HappyInJapan  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Bobby Lopez Creative Hey Bobby. You got it, I have a Blackbird camera stabilizer and love it. Very easy to adjust and collapse to take in my backpack and also able to handle a wider range of camera weights than the traditional Glidecam brand.
      The studio section of each episode was shot on mainly on a Nikon D750 with a secondary ND7000 rolling on a slightly different angle (though after reviewing footage I wish I had put it further to the side). The location section was shot almost 100% on Nikon D7000 about 8 months before getting the D750. A few shots were from the GoProHero3+ Black which I usually control via iPhone app... though in truth it sometimes is too much of a hassle and I just hit record and shoot blind w/ GoPro. The shot at the end is GoPro, and although I tap my phone like I'm stopping the recording I'm actually just a big faker since the phone was still locked and not controlling the camera at that point. ^_^ Season 3 of Tour Japan will be the first season where everything (studio and location) and are shot on D750 with a few GoPro shots sprinkled in where necessary. I'm using GoPro less and less these days. Originally it was for underwater and slow motion (120fps at 720p, or even 120fps at WVGA), but since picking up a Sony rx100m3 last spring I find I only reach for the GoPro to get interesting angles other cameras can't fit or for something underwater... Sorry for the long answer to your short questions. Hope that helps though. Feel free to hit me back if I've only created more confusion. :-)
      Andrew

    I was lucky enough to tour the Imperial Palace in 1997 and got to bring along my tiny maltese dog Babe. It was a beautiful day and all was going well, until my dog Babe got away from me and went under a huge black lacquered door. I ran to the door, got on my hands and knees looked into the bottom gap of the door and starting yelling for her to come to me "....right now!", before I knew it the palace guards had me sitting up straight but still on my knee's with guns in my face yelling at me in Japanese. Two pushed me to the ground with my hands behind my head and began to frisk me. A fellow tour, an older Japanese women came up to the guards, bowed low and than explained to the guards what had happened and they dog was still on the other side of the big doors. I thanked the nice lady in Japanese but the guards still would not let me up or move. After more guard cars came and this female guard with a big animal wire looped pole to catch mean big animals; I was finally stood up, taken to a black unmarked car and sat in it for two hours. With the very nice fellow tourist lady refusing to leave me. After two and half long hours another car showed up; after the palace closed down that whole section of the palace gardens we were touring, this very nice lady dressed in a business suite, skirt and all spoke englsh with me and said they were very sorry and that a Palace employee would be bringing my dog to me very shortly. I asked why was my dog kept in the palace for so long. She explained to me that my dog Babe, had gotten all the way to the private gardens of the Emperor and a lady in waiting to the Empress found my dog drinking from a koi pond belong to the Empress. I asked if my Empress meet my dog. The nice lady said no, due to the Emperor and Empress being in London, but several of the Ladies in Waiting to the Empress enjoyed my dogs company for a while before calling the Palace Household Agency. About fifteen minutes more and those big lacquered doors I looked under opened a beautiful lady dressed in the finest silk kimono came out followed two more guards dressed differently than the one's who had me on the ground. She came right up to me with Babe in her arms; with Babe looking very smug; the heffer, and handed me Babe. She said a few words to me; leaned over to kiss babe, bowed very low to me, turned and went back in the gates. than with a loud boom; the doors closed behind her. I was than escorted out by car top the entrance we came into, out of the palace and driven straight to my hotel. My Babe had be bathed, combed out beautifully, perfumed up and was wearing a gorgeous silk hand embroidered little over-coat. And when we checked out of our hotel; we had found out that the Palace had paid our bill. Now that is a Palace experience Although i would not like to repeat it. Thanks for reading, Joe.

    I would love to do the tour but my husband and I are limited on time and want to see as much of Tokyo as possible. We'll be there for only 3 nights before heading to Kyoto and it's our first time in Japan. Do you know how long the tour is and is it worth doing? Or should we just take some pictures and move on?

    • @HappyInJapan
      @HappyInJapan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great! How about 4k?

    • @HappyInJapan
      @HappyInJapan  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love 4K. It's interesting though, that most devices and playback locations aren't capable of displaying 4K. Before making that jump, I'd rather make these videos 60fps. My camera shoots 1080p at 60fps but in order to create true slow motion I make the final video 24fps (like you'd see in the movie theater) so that if necessary all the footage could be slowed down to 40% speed. When I upgrade my camera next, I'm hoping to get something that shoot 1080p at 120fps so the final video could be 1080p60fps. I'd go up to 4K if the camera also shot that res at 60fps, but not really convinced people watch YT videos at true 4K. Even if they select that option in the playback settings, they would also need a screen with 4K pixels to get the benefit.

    • @DavidDiaz-so5kj
      @DavidDiaz-so5kj 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Happy In Japan frankly I watch in lower res because we no longer have unlimited internet in states. Most of us now have a 1tb cap per month which 4K hits sooner then you think with a family

    I’ve read various comments. Let me give my own perspective. I have been to Japan a few of times. I go there for business, not any sightseeing. I had the time to walk around the Imperial grounds, or former Edo castle and I did see the lines to tour the Imperial, “residence’ but didn’t go there . They were very short lines. I love history, architecture, art and various Japanese things. One can spend months touring this country. Very nice people, but please learn very basic Japenese such as hello, good afternoon, thank you…. You really don’t want to be that foreigner. Basic courtesy goes a long way in Japan.

    Love the Marunouchi side of Tokyo Station. The station itself has undergone significant changes in the last few years I've been visiting and grown so much you might want to do a video on the inside. The Higashi Gyoen Gardens next to the palace are always a must visit for me as the wide open spaces are such a contrast to the tight confines of the city.

    • @HappyInJapan
      @HappyInJapan  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Perdomot Great point! Yes, the station has become an attraction in and of itself. We almost made a video all about it and interesting nearby areas like Yurakucho and Ginza. With only 6 eps per season it didn't make the cut, but you could easily spend a lifetime exploring Tokyo and never run out of interesting stuff.
