Being a soft presence in the world is not garbage theology. It is the exact same presence nearly every employee has in the workplace who is a Christian., it isn’t hide your faith. It is model your faith.
I am not saying that everything TGC puts forth is flawless. But she seems rather harsh in her comments about the TGC as a whole (not just in this clip).
Agreed. Butterfield has a large microphone, and I'm concerned at how quick she is to make statements like this that can do more harm than good. I've greatly benefited from TGC and have seen God use that ministry in many people's lives.
intemperate, incautious words from a woman whose clarity and good judgement have been a joy to hear previously. She's not forming an argument, just slinging mud. Very sad to see. A sobering reminder that we all have our bad days.
Government schools suck. It's not even a matter of religion. My four year old is already starting to read. I'm doing everything I can to keep my kids out of the minimal standard education system I would expect a government to provide.
That is not true. What about charter and magnet schools? These are government funded as well. You can do a quick google search to find scores of excellent public schools across America. Broad, generalized statements like this are not helpful.
To all of the people who think their children are school missionaries are they missionaries at their work? How can children be wise enough as a child to combat what the world has to offer? The world is being presented to children from adult teachers. And children are going to counter that? Home school your child so when they are adults, they will have the wisdom to make a difference.
We teach them! That is the role of parents: to teach their children how to live in a sinful world. I've seen kids learn from a young age how to combat the many heresies of this world. Homeschooling kids is not the only option.
why do we believers spend so much time fighting amongst ourselves when there is already enough work to do for the Kingdom? As a reformed public school Christian, I agree we need to pursue Holiness but at the same time be Paulinian and not separate ourselves from engaging the world. My 3rd grade public school teacher read us The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrode and studied The Abolition of Man at secular university. Only Christ will bring in the Kingdom.
I believe Rosaria Butterfield is wrong. Sending kids to public schools is not "garbage theology." We can't hide our children away from the world in order to "protect" them from evil because evil resides within all our hearts. We need Chrisitan kids in public schools for a host of reasons and I wish Rosaria would explain what she means when she makes bombastic statements like this.
Not everybody is at the same place; I don’t know that I would call it garbage theology per se, but that people are growing in grace and are at different levels. I never had my child in public school , but to be perfectly honest when I had her in Christian school, it was not much better. Some of the kids there were devils. As well, even in these Christian environments, the hiring process for the academics was so sketchy. I was in a Presbyterian fold and many of the teachers that were hired could’ve been assessed as unbelievers or their theology wasn’t aligned with actually the church ecclesiastical system that led that school. Is this not a confusing matter? You have educators that say they’re Christians, but they’re teaching something different from the ecclesiastical system. Hence, there are many issues. We eventually had to homeschool, which worked out well in the end .
such great advice.. it's not like we all have it figured out and when someone points out something that is CLEARLY not working out - then repent and move on...
As a Christian think about the words you're saying. Are you being strongly insensitive? Listen to yourself and really think about what you sound like. Discipline doesn't need to sound condescending and cruel.
People totally freak out over Jen wilkin saying that it was best for her family to send her kids to public school and then totally discount her numerous theologically sound teachings. School choice is not a first order issue- it doesn’t determine our salvation. Jen does encourage Biblical literacy and being women or men of the word and using what we learn there as the basis of our decision making. There are plenty of heretical teachers out there. How about we call them out?
100% agree. I am grieved to see this kind of in-fighting between brothers and sisters. I pray God help Butterfield to see the emptiness and futility of this kind of quarreling between spiritual family members.
Wow, this is unreal. Now ya'll are attacking Jen Wilkin because she has an opinion about public school, which is a social issue, not theological, after coming from a family of teachers? I'm disappointed in Butterfield, I really am. Don't get so extreme that you're falling off the path on the other side.
How have you reached the conclusion that parenting and educating children is not a theological matter? Are you aware of any places in Scripture that address parental responsibility? It is my opinion that your presupposition that "political" and "theological" are mutually exclusive categories is foolish and not Biblically defensible. The whole earth is the Lord's!
@jarredpetroff6659 I do not believe, and did not say, politics and theology are separate. As someone who was homeschooled and started full time community College at 16, I prefer homeschooling. However, it is not for every parent or child and God will not dismiss or be angered at a parent for letting them learn in a public school (especially if it's a good one.) In the 1st century wealthy family's had tutors, many poor family got whatever learning someone around them was willing to give or an apprenticeship (which, during some times in history, were treated no better than a slave.) You use a lot of big words and make a lot of assumptions. Perhaps you should try a bit of humility.
Render unto Cesar that which is his... God's word says our children are OURS. They belong to Christ. Also are these public school Christian kids baptized? If they can't be because they don't understand the gospel well enough why are they being sent out as "missionaries".
Rosario is so true ... LISTEN and RESPOND to her counsel "Gospel Coalition." Better yet, REPENT while there is yet time. Why oh why is that so hard for you?
How can you be "salt and light" if you are hiding out at home or in an all Christian environment at a "Christian school"? We sent our children to Christian schools to share the Gospel. And, they did. Teachers and students accepted Christ because the Holy Spirit worked through our children. You are never to young to be on mission.
I can tell you plenty of stories that worked out differently. No one should be on mission unless they 1. Have surrendered their life totally to Christ and 2. Are prepared with a good plan. Sending kids, many of whom have not fully surrendered to the Lord, to hang out in an ungodly environment and to essentially be raised by nonbelievers for 6-8 hours a day, learning about sex in 1st grade, is not a good plan, in my opinion, unless the Holy Spirit clearly calls for it.
@@justinmayfield6579 How do you know that all public school teachers are nonbelievers? And what school is teaching first graders about sex? Please name the school, the teacher(s), the city or town, and state. Thank you.
