    I'm a novice with engines and really enjoy/benefit these teardowns. It helps me learn engine parts and identify parts, even it it's not always in the same format for each engine. As a rental service manager dealing with different vehicles, it certainly helps to know the basics parts to identify problems. Thank you!

    The bent rod looks like they drove it into some deep water, or they tried to start it after a flood. This would also cause all of that rust!

    • @wirenutt57
      @wirenutt57 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure! The only thing I can think of is it was driven into deep water while it was running, maybe went into a lake, canal, or river when the driver fell asleep or something similar. Maybe in the north and they were driving it on a frozen lake that wasn't frozen as much as they thought, then it sat at the bottom for a while until the ice thawed and someone could dive in and get a chain on it.

    • @pawsnpistons
      @pawsnpistons 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@wirenutt57 You dont need to drive in a river for that. Depending on the car a slightly flooded parking space is enough, because if the air intake is mountet low, thats it for engine. A colleague of mine destroyed a new BMW that way.

    Being an old geezer and having rebuilt many engines over the years, I cannot see how guys can destroy these Ford, GM, and Chrysler engines of today. They are so carefully machined and the tolerances are so right on the money, these babes should last forever with a little bit of care and common sense......and this is coming from a guy that pushed his engines hard, both on the strip/street and roundy-round. Love the 6.1 tear downs. In the middle of a 6.1 based 426 build. I'm sure you know this but you can make an easy cam removal tool by welding a rod to a cam bolt. Gives you way better leverage.

      Just as easy is get a short piece of all-thread and screw an old junk cam into the front of a cam you want to remove. It will work like a balancing counterweight and/or a lever to better control the cam removal without beating up the cam bearings, or cam lobes.

  • @clifbradley
    @clifbradley 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The intake for these cars is at the bottom. Another brilliant Dodge design flaw. But driving through even a small puddle or hauling ass in the heavy rain is enough to soak that filter and probably sat at idle for a bit and then put the car under heavy load hitting the gas, sucked in all that water on a soaked filter...must have thought they hit an open sewer main or ran over a 4 inch chunk of concrete when that hit. I bet that sounded glorious..

    • @IhateYoutube
      @IhateYoutube 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's no where near the bottom the airbox pulls from the bottom of the apron like 2' off the ground. If this damage happened with a stock airbox you can bet that front
      end was under a foot or more of water. My guess is they had an aftermarket fender pull CAI that hung down much lower than stock.

    Seen that happen one time, mustang with 4.6. Going down road after rain and hit puddle, cold air intake wasn't sealed as most aren't, swallowed a huge load and taco'd a connector. Not enough to lock up but enough to change compression and cause a misfire. When I got car, did compression test found one lower than others. Customer wanted fixed, so I tore into it. Found rod with a slight bend. Replaced rod and in the wind again.

  • @radoliz2
    @radoliz2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    To bend that rod, the engine had to be running. And a fluid suddenly leaked inside that cylinder. I wonder if it has a sudden head gasket failure at that cylinder? The hemi are great engines super simple to tear down. Tho they have valve seat problems it’s not that common to see, usually due to them being over heated at some point. And bad lifters tearing up cams on the later models. But the cam lifter issue was very common to see on LS engines also. I think they both use the same lifter suppler? The main repair they always needed was broken exhaust manifold bolts.

Not like something like a dropped valve as everything else is ok. Possibly it did get a gut full of water and someone flooded it with transmission fluid in an attempt to prevent water damaging the engine while it was sitting around.

    The one crank journal can be polished and used. By the look of it without a mic the surface seems very useable. Polish and plastigauge?

    You've got a great business and youtube content model. This thing is a content mint.
    This suggestion goes in the law of diminishing returns bin, but I'd love to see a compilation of like thirty to a hundred 5.3 GM v8 failures (what's in my car). It'd be cool to observe the many failure states of the motor and see what's most likely to happen.

    Also: What''s the status of M3 E46? Last video left me unsure if it is working now

    I dismantled for 16 years. I used a heavy-duty large animal surgical table. Had a nice v down center. Made it a bit cleaner.

    My shop never gets a Hemi from a yard that *dosen't* need at least 1 valve cover. I think the yard guys get spiffs from FCA to punch holes in them.

    i assume you don't know about the bolt in the water jacket right above the oil pan.... the old engines had a pitcock in the water jacket to drain the block to prevent freezing

      @@justineaston8202 Lmfao. They get fixed at the dealer that's the reason you don't see many. Or that most people buy a reman engine for the 5.4s ect. Fords got some problems with people not changing oil soon enough and the little rocket bits exploding and ruining engines. or timing problems ect.

    Why did the rod bend? Hydrolocked? Nitros shot? I can't imagine it happened inside manufactured rpm range but with all things today you never know.

    I just realized that this job is like buying packs of trading cards. Some of the parts/cards are valuable, but mainly because they rarely survive the failure event, and people also need them for their own collections.
