Omara Aguilar Mint is a plant sacred to Hades. Its origin comes from a story with a naiad named Minthe. Minthe was a naiad associated with the river Cocytus. Hades had an extra-marital affair with Minthe. Because she had attracted the attention of Hades, Minth claimed to be superior to Hades ' wife Persephone. When she heard of this Persephone transformed Minthe into a plant. Because of Minthe's association with death, mint is used at funeral rights.

Sometimes people forget that Hades wasn't intending to kidnap her right away. This is how I picture it:
Hades (to Zeus): "I know nothing about girls... should I just ask her if she likes me... ooorrr?"
Zeus: "haha silly brother, so inexperienced in the ways of women. If you think that her mother will even let you get close to her, you're a fool!"
Hades: "Well what do you suggest I should do? Write a love letter or something?"

Zeus is a womanizer and also an aphathetic god, while on the other hand hades sticks to persephone and he seems to be a gentlemen.

Zeus has kidnapped plenty of women while Hades kidnapped Persephone (and in some stories Persephone wanders into the underworld without Hades knowing) and mostly stayed loyal to her while also allowing her to visit her mother, some people say Hades created harsh punishments but no the other gods (mostly Zeus) came up with most of them.

I always feel sad when Demeter’s mourning of Persephone makes her turn old, I read an academic journal once that said that Demeter turning earth into winter is a metaphor about a mothers sadness when her daughter marries and moves away.
The myth was created to show the pain the seperation of mothers and daughters weddings brought but just one correction, the myth takes place in the summer, where it is typical for the earth to be "barren"

As the father of persephone, he gave Hades his blessings to marry her and organized her kidnapping; he hid it from Demeter because she was very overprotective of her daughter and won't sit by and do nothing if Persephone was married off with her knowledge. He's the one to blame really.

That's why he gave Persephone everything he had.
That's why he married her.
And that's why he let her go back to her mother, giving her a chance to choose.
Even if at first he looks like a kidnapper, he shows himself as a loving husband at the end of the story.

I really like this. It shows Hades and Persephone's relationship in a very real and positive way. It shows how, yeah, Hades kidnapped Persephone but Hades gives her the pomegranate as an option. And how Demeter grows to accept Persephone's love for Hades and how she eats the fruit by herself.

Ok first of all hades isn’t actually that bad he’s really just a good guy but ever since Disney made Hercules, people now think of him as an evil person. In one Greek legend, hades loves Persephone so much that he tortured two men who came to the underworld to try and take Persephone away from him. He also helped a man get his wife back but the man only lost his wife because he did the exact thing hades told him not to do

@@volkerk169 She actually was kidnapped. He asked Zeus for help and Zeus asked Gaia (Mother Earth) to grow flowers. As intended, Persephone was distracted by the flowers and Hades rode out on a carriage from a crack in the earth and abducted her. He took her down to the Underworld where they fell in love whilst up above, Demeter was wreaking havoc on mortals and freezing everyone's crops to try to get information and find her. Zeus noticed this and that less people were coming to his temples. He sent Hermes down to the Underworld to try to convince Persephone to return to her mother so people would stop dying. When Persephone found out what her mother had done, she returned but not without a parting gift from Hades. He gave her a pomegranate and after around six months with her mother, she became lonely and missed Hades more than ever. She ate six of the 12 pomegranate seeds, which led on to the year being divided into seasons. During the six months she was in the Underworld, Demeter wreaked havoc and froze everythings, which was essentially winter and autumn. During the six months with her mother up above, everything was bright and blooming, which became spring and summer. Persephone used to be named 'Kore,' which means 'daughter' and 'maiden.' But after becoming Queen of the Underworld, she took the name 'Persephone' which means 'Bringer of Destruction.'

Sami Burcham The underworld isn't hell. It has a variety of places within it, like an entire world. It's just where souls go if they don't ascend to Olympus, which was mainly reserved for Gods and demigods. So no matter how good of a person you were, you'd go to the underworld and you likely wouldn't suffer but end up in a section of the underworld quite similar to the proverbial heaven.

I realize that. The Isles of the Blest are for the extreme over-achievers who were reincarnated three times to see if the could go there if they earned the “good” part of the underworld, which I don’t remember the name of; I’ll get back to later on that. Then there’s the in between place like Purgatory called the Fields of Asphodel. However, Persephone actually had most of the say in the punishments for The Fields of Punishment (aka “hell” part of the underworld), which took up most of the underworld-with Hades’ palace in the middle of it all.

Sami Burcham I asked my ancient Greek teacher about the story of Persephone and she told me that in other versions of the story Persephone doesn't get abducted, she just accidentally wanders into the underworld. I like that version a lot more.
Why does everyone paint Hades as the demon archetype? He's a really nice guy who loves his wife, keeps his promises, and does his job. Plus, Kerberos means "spotted", so he named his gigantic three headed hell hound Spot.

Because in christianity, the ruler of the underwold / dead is "bad Satan" everyone else kinda gets dragged along with it. It's also the reason why Hades was f.ex. the bad guy in Disney's "Hercules" and I think one of those Percy Jackson movies

The art is absolutely beautiful, telling this story without words. I also loved that in the end Demeter respected her daughter's choice. She's going to miss her, but she was already suspicious that her daughter was no longer really happy on the surface and wanted to be with her husband. It's hard for her to let go, but she can see her daughter is really happy with Hades, and Demeter understands that Persephone is no longer a child and needs to live her own life and she accepts that. I think that speaks to any mother learning to let go of their children.
When the story goes like this, it's a bit more heartbreaking. Imagine if Persephone fell in love with Hades, and wanted to be with him, but at the same time didn't want to leave her mother's side. Being forced to split her time between them, knowing they will both be miserable without her.

To be completely honest, I've read some of the other versions of this story, and I like this one the best. Hades acted as nothing more than a gentleman---despite the fact that he kidnapped her from a controlling mother---He treated her as his equal, and even gave her the option to leave. If he truly were as bad as the other gods, he wouldn't have given her an option, and he most certainly wouldn't have cared to ask for consent! Hades was the best choice she could've ever made, and I respect her decision to stay with a man that treats her right.

Well, to be completely honest, this version is really not the correct one. You may like it , but it's not accurate to the story. Hades kept Persephone imprisoned in hell, and only allowed her to go outside sometimes just for a few months to see her mother. Her mother was so distraught that she cried and wept and the land was barren during the months she and her daughter were apart but all because 'devilman' had to get his rocks off with his wife, he never let the woman and her mother stay together longer than a few months. Sounds pretty selfish to me, as a guy. But it's even worse, considering that many of the gods and goddesses in the Greek pantheon effected the human world and often drastically, with their suffering and emotional tirades. So if Persephone's mother was in a funk about losing her only child, surely the earth would be barren of food, no animals would eat or be plentiful and even humans would starve, birth complications would be prevalent due to starvation of the mother and illness would be prevalent too since the immune system is compromised in malnourished people. And cyclically, just as her heart was repeatedly stripped and her life deprived of her child's loving presence, so would the world be deprived of the nurturing energy that healed and nurtured all upon it.
I read somewhere that this version (where Persephone actually loves Hades and agreed to be his queen) is indeed the correct one but during the dark ages churches were replacing many of the origin stories with bs that make the gods seem bad and evil, including this one

I like this version of Demeter where she didn’t send the earth into a barren and cold wasteland to make a point to Zeus to give her their daughter back, it was more out of utter grief that her daughter was gone and she could only assume the worst. And how she wants her daughter to still be with her but also knows Persephone is also happy in the Underworld with Hades.
To be fair, Persephone was promised to Hades, who is one of the only gods to remain faithful to his girl. He even prevented two "heroes" from kidnapping her by fusing them to chairs with snakes and sending the wraths on them. They're truly a great couple.
Yep, there's many versions of this myth. I really thought about adding the chairs with snakes in it, but the animatic was already pushing over 10 minutes already. Good observation though!
E. Louise M. But, if we are being fair to Demeter, she had no knowledge of what was going to happen. Nor did Persephone. And, if you're thinking about it this way: Persephone wouldn't have known what sex was at the time, so even if she did consent, if she told her mother; she probably would've labelled it as rape, and then told everyone about how 'Hades raped my child'. So, in all reality, no one is in the right or the wrong. In the story, Hades could be seen as 'evil', unless you look deeper into it.

In so many of the myths I read “fighting” a woman meant raping her until she gave up.
Dudes, everybody upset because he kidnaped her or whatever, but they are still the best couple in the pantheon. Like, do you know how Zeus and Hera married? There's a version where he changes his form to be a bird, enters on her room, act's like a "pet", and when her defenses are down he changes back and RAPE her. She get's so ashamed that agree to marry him if he told nobody, and still he betray her like it was a game.
So, Hades kidnaped Persephone? He still treated her with love and respect and didn't have childs with other woman, while Zeus, who everybody thinks is the perfect husband, goes out there and rapes woman, he even raped Persephone not once, but TWICE, one as a snake and the second with Hades' appareance. And don't even get me started with Poseidon...

Zeus can also be seen as the oldest in terms of time outside of Kronos... It's a perspective, merely, e.g.,
His siblings were trapped in Kronos shortly after they were born but Zeus was not trapped inside Kronos, and then Zeus released his siblings which is almost like Kronos giving birth to the siblings (a second birth for them). It was an interpretation I heard from a mythology class at university. (Kind of like the Biblical "I am the alpha and the omega")

I love the symbolism in the character’s eyes and in Persephone’s hair.
Maybe It’s accidental, but I like to think that, in the characters eyes, the purple is because their find or they’re doing “their thing”, and the pink is when they’re having strong positive feelings, like happiness or love; like at the beginning, when Demeter is happy doing her job (or maybe because, for her, her daughter is the love of her life), and Persephone’s eyes are full gray, because she is happy, but not specially happy, and she hasn’t found her “full thing” yet, until that moment, she just was her mother’s companion.
Hermes’ eyes are purple all the time because he was doing his job (“his thing”) as messenger god during all the short.
When Hermes just came to the Underworlds, Hades’ eyes are more pink than before (still purple, but more a pinkish purple); Hermes’ eyes are more pink when he is explaining to Hades the situation because he is happy assuming the hero’s role in this story (they became purple again at the moment he saws Persephone).
When Hermes first sees the new Persephone, her eyes are full pink, like, she is totally in love and happy now; so, when it’s zoomed in on her face, It's not just pink, but pink with purple! She is happy, in love, and found “her thing”; her role a Queen of the Underworld. Then, when Hades explains her what’s happening, her eyes are pink than purple, not for the love to Hades this time, but for the love to her mother (or, maybe, because even hearing all what her mother is doing upside, she still loving her husband, one of the two).
When Hades says goodbye to Persephone and gives her the pomegranate, his eyes are full purple, like, he is doing his duty, what is right; but, when Persephone is going with Hermes, looking back at him, Hades’ eyes are full purple, BUT!, with a pink dot, a symbol of hope, and that he will still love her, and waiting for her, even if she is gone.
When Persephone is back, her eyes are gray again, because she is very far from her role and her love.
Then, both, Persephone and Demeter have gray eyes, because Demeter can’t be happy if her daughter isn’t happy.
Then, at the moment Persephone eats the pomegranate, her eyes became a darker shade of pink, because he is doing a sacrifice for love, like, a very passionate love here… And then her eyes are full normal pink again at the moment she is totally transformed and sees Hades again. She is totally in love and that’s all she could think at this moment.
Or maybe the purple eyes just represent negative feelings (the pink still being the same); and in Hades, his eyes represented obsession at first, later sadness because he is letting his queen go; and Persephone’s eyes were pink-purple at the Underworld because, even when she was in love and happy, she still scared and missing her mom. Hermes’ eyes were purple because he fears all this Demeter situation. And Demeter’s eyes were purple she was looking for Persephone, then when she is seeing her transformed into Underworld’s queen, and then, when she is going. Then, Persephone’s eyes are pink-purple at the ending because, even when she is happy of going with her husband, she still knows that she is going to miss her mom.
At the end, Demeter’s eyes are gray, but you can see a little of pink, because, even when she is going to miss her daughter, at least knows Persephone is going to be happy.
And in Persephone’s hair.
At the beginning Persephone’s hair is tied, and with the white floral headdress as a symbolism of chastity and innocence.
Persephone’s fiery hair, obviously, is a symbolism of her new role as the queen of the Underworld.
When Persephone is back, Demeter puts the white headdress on her again, waiting things to get back to normal again; just that Persephone’s hair is down, not tied; like, something actually changed and isn't exactly the same than before; can't be the same.
Then, when Persephone eats the pomegranate and transforms again, her fairy hair completely destroys the headdress; her chastity and innocence is long gone, and it can't be brought back; now, the metamorphosis into her new role is complete.

I don't know why but the way Demeter looked when Persephone was gone just broke my heart and made me cry.

Funny you should say that because that's kinda the whole point of the versions of the myth that I've read. Despite this comment section being filled with people naively claiming "bUt pErsephone WANTED to go with Hades in the oRiGiNaL vErSiOn" just because they wish it was so, there's no such thing as one "original" version to end all versions. There are several, equally valid versions from legitimate ancient sources and in the ones I've read the mother/daughter love between Demeter and Persephone is the focus, while the "love" between Persephone and Hades is either nonexistent or takes the backseat by a mile. He even is more of a thing that happens to Persephone than a character in some. Thematically speaking, I don't think the name 'Kore' (Κόρη literally means 'daughter') was chosen randomly for Persephone in the older versions (although admittedly there could be other reasons too e.g. people preferred to refer to underworld deities by epithets rather by their names due to superstition). Although no one can tell for sure, I read it more as the story between a mother and her daughter being separated due to the daughter emerging from the innocence of girlhood and being taken away to get married (most likely against her will). It's about a mother's grief and a young woman finding agency in her new circumstances. I like the modern version of the story where Demeter is a controlling mother and Persephone is willingly seeking out love, I do, but I think the older version can also be very empowering and it's sadly overlooked in favor of a romance that was probably never even there originally. Persephone's myth was beloved by women at the time for a reason. Anyway go by the modern version if you'd like peeps, but don't claim it's "canon" or the oRiGiNaL vErSiOn.
Edit: Also wanna clarify that Persephone's marriage to Hades grew indeed- despite its iffy beginning- into a very functional and mutual one according to ancient sources. Hades was unflinchingly loyal to her (not exactly typical for male gods), he valued her opinion and counsel so much that in several myths she ends up calling the shots instead of him (at his own behest), she was one of the few female deities to be seen exercising real power in her domain and she actually got to spent equal time with her husband and family. Even in the old versions there's a lot to like about Persephone x Hades in spite of that initial iffy aspect, my comment was never about "this ship is problematic and you should feel bad for shipping it". Just wanted to clear up some confusion I've seen about the myth and that I wish the mother-daughter relationship got some more love in pop culture instead of painting Demeter as a controlling, abusive mother that Persephone just couldn't wait to be away from so that her abductor can be the hero.

Very interesting! She doesn't eat the pomegranate until after she's out of the Underworld. Then when she wants to go back to her mama, she eats an apple from the surface. It's like they're giving her bus passes to go back and forth--but it's with fruit. Demeter isn't a helicopter parent--she just misses her daughter. Hades isn't a bad guy--he just wanted love. There's no going back which is why in the original story of the four seasons, Zeus bends the rule slightly creating a gap where Persephone can see her mother 6 months a year. Thus forming our seasons.
I mean Demeter is a crazy bitch my guy. There's a version of the myth where Demeter wants Persephone to be one of the virgin goddesses so she causally forces Persephone to live alone on a moutain, and act like a child. Hades treated her like his equal, and that's why they fell in love.

I love how this myth seems to try and explain the seasons. That's why I love mythologies, they're always rooted in something man is trying to understand about the natural and human world.
Fun fact: the original myth for Persephone, before the Catholics got it in their hands, actually made Persephone FIND an entrance to the Underworld while she was frolicking in a meadow, and Hades never even meant a for her to come, but when she did, she loved the Underworld for what it was, and told Hades to make her his queen. Demeter was beyond scared and PISSED that they can't find her precious Kore (btw in this myth, Persephone was named Kore aka "Little Child") and she then created the famine for humanity to suffer for not having any help with the search. Zeus (who didn't like seeing his worshippers dying out in massive rates) was finally tired of Kore's antics and personally got her *himself* from the Underworld. Hades later found out and was mortified, already having fallen in love with Kore. But, Kore had eaten a pomegranate without Hades knowing, knowing that if she didn't she would never return to her beautiful kingdom and husband. Zeus then punished her after he heard that she had eaten the fruit of the dead, connecting her to the Underworld forever. He "grounded" Kore by staying with her mother for six months and spend the rest with her husband. Oh! And he also changed her name from Kore (little child) to motherFUCKING CHAOS BRINGER! OUR BABY PERSEPHONE'S NAME MEANS CHAOS BRINGER IN THE ORIGINAL STORY! She also dishes out most of the punishments in the Underworld too. So yeah. Persephone is a badass if I do say so myself!

Actually, for once the change isn't something to be traced back to the Catholics. The version of Persephone being kidnapped, which is the one widely accepted today, was the one that was recorded by Homer and his peers. And yes, they were mostly assholes who lived in Athens and so had rather poor views on women. I do much prefer the version you're quoting though! Do you have sources?

Your wrong, there is a true version, by that I mean one of the first recorded versions of the tale so the most realistic. Historians have found years of evidence to support the the real story so reading it another way is almost like not appreciating the stories of the gods. Although, the true version of this tale is much more disturbing compared to this animation made solely because it has artisitc purposes.

Persephone and Hade's story was always my favorite they had pure love for each other and were pretty much monogamous. He treated her right, like an adult, and he let her be the badass she always was

@Abraham JohnathanHi, this might be a bit late, but here it goes. The "main" Gods, that is Hades, Poseidon, Hera, Hestia and Zeus were all offsprings of Rhea and Chronos, which were titans. Then you have Aphrodite, which was born off the sea foam formed by Chronos father falling testicle (as in Chronos castrated his father). Some more obscure deities were also born during the titan age, such as Thanatos. The others were offsprings of the previously mentioned gods, who either reproduce with others gods (for example, Ares is Hera's and Zeus's son) , nymphs or humans. Hope I didn't make this confusing. (I'm basing this of Hesiod's Theogany, btw).

Y'know in some versions, like the one I originally read first was.. Hades didn't kidnap Persephone. Hades invited her to his place and Persephone agreed. Hades offered her 12 seeds as food. Persephone ate it. Her mother hurriedly went to look for her but when she found her she already ate 6 seeds. We'll, as we know in Greek mythology once you eat something from the underworld you can never go back. So it was settled that Persephone spends 6 months with her mother that makes spring and summer then 6 months back in the underworld with Hades, hence autumn and ffall.And it was believed that Persephone actually loves Hades
Even in that version, he still deceived her so i would not call it a love story. In all versions he conspires to keep her from her mother against her will and her mother's will. Really, Persephone's will is precluded by her mother's will, since she is underage in the myth and Hades, in some versions even goes to her mother to get permission to marry Persephone which is never given.
I read somewhere that this version (where Persephone actually loves Hades and agreed to be his queen) is indeed the correct one but during the dark ages churches were replacing many of the origin stories with bs that make the gods seem bad and evil, including this one

Woof Woof Where did you read this? The Homeric version is the most attributed to the abduction myth and considered the oldest and Hesiod mentions it too. I have never heard any church changing Greek stories. In fact, there is evidence that as the pantheon of gods changed through time so did the telling of their stories. However I’ve never read about any Persephone myth where she wasn’t abducted. Abduction and rape stories are pretty common within Greek myths already I don’t see why the church would change one more. From Hera, Demeter, Ganymede, etc. so many stories tell of this. 🤷🏻♀️

Yeah, totally accurate to the real version of the myth where he abducts her against her mother's will and keeps her imprisoned as a slave. Not to mention he was a middle aged man who used to watch her from the shadows and wanted to consummate a relationship with her and marry her despite her mother's objections; she was much younger than him when all this was going on, mind you.
if this was a lifetime movie it would end with Hades going to jail and Persphone in the hospital, then cut to her going in and out of juvenile hall and getting into trouble for truancy and criminal acts before suffering a breakdown, due to emotional turmoil of the abuse she suffered for years. Finally she and her mother would go to family therapy to try to overcome the damage the abuse had done to her mind and repair their relationship as mother and daughter.

The story of Hades and Persephone has always been one of my favorites in Greek Mythology, I loved every second of this video and the amount of work that went into it. To say the least, this is a masterpiece in my opinion.

I’ve seen a bunch of, “ No this isn’t the original story, men messed it up years later! Persephone wanted to go! Posts, I feel the need to spread this post and inform y’all.
“ A disclaimer, first of all: any post that says THIS IS THE ORIGINAL MYTH is going to be wank, because we don’t know what the original myth was - we only have the first written sources, but without a time machine there’s just no way of finding out how the myth developed in an oral tradition. So already, we can debunk about 80% of that post. Groovy.
The first source we have for Persephone being carried away is in Hesiod’s Theogony, written in the 8th or 7th century BC. We also have the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, written in the 7th or 6th century BC, which is explicitly about her being taken away by Hades.
Hesiod is one of the oldest Greek sources that we have, roughly contemporaneous with Homer. We don’t have any earlier sources than this which say ‘hey, Persephone went to Hades because she thought it would be cool’. A lot of people have theorised that this could have been an original, or at least an earlier tradition, but it’s about 60% wishful thinking, 20% misinterpreting evidence (i.e. assuming that Persephone and Demeter used to be aspects of a great mother goddess, which they weren’t) and about 20% conjecture based on actual rational thought (i.e. the fact that the oldest written source we have is about an abduction doesn’t mean that it is the original source; there could be older non-extant written sources or just oral tales which pre-dated writing). It’s not fact.
It’s true that Homer himself never explicitly says that Persephone was abducted - he just describes her as Hades’ wife - but he also doesn’t say that she wasn’t abducted; it could well be that the myth of her abduction was so well known that he had no need to recount it.
It is true that Persephone’s name was Kore, which means ‘maiden’; however, this could be an epithet because she was unmarried. It’s also theorised that it was a euphemism of sorts for when people didn’t want to name Persephone outright; again, this is a theory. Lots of gods had epithets - basically cooler names which underlined some of their core attributes, e.g. Apollo = Loxias, which highlights Apollo’s powers of prophecy. Unlike the post claims, the name ‘Persephone’ does not definitively mean death / destroyer; the etymology is unknown. The ‘death / destroyer’ theory is just one of many, and others are based around ideas of harvest and grain.
The reason Zeus got involved wasn’t just because he was tasked with sorting out justice - it was because he had told Hades ‘hey, you want a wife? Cool! Abduct my daughter, Persephone. Her mum totally won’t mind,’ and then when Persephone’s mother did mind, Zeus was like ‘I fucked up real bad, I should sort this shit out.’ In Ancient Greece, women didn’t have to consent in the same way as we do now. Abduction marriages were actually illegal (or at least very very naughty) but the bride’s consent basically took the form of her father saying ‘you’ll marry this dude, right? Yeah, cool. She’ll marry you, dude.’ Here, Zeus gives Persephone’s consent to Hades by telling Hades that he can marry her - this is why technically she wasn’t exactly abducted, because the necessary consent - her father’s - was given. HOWEVER, let’s not get into Greek law here. She was abducted by our standards.
It is also true that Persephone became a very feared goddess and basically had a great time in the Underworld. She wasn’t exactly more terrible than Hades, though; there are certain myths (e.g. Sisyphus and Orpheus) where she’s the one who says ‘Hades, babe, shall we give this guy a chance to make his way out of the Underworld alive?’ HOWEVER, she did usually do this with the implementation of specific terms, meaning that she had a level of control in proceedings which a lot of other wife goddesses didn’t have over their respective spouses’ spheres. Most mythological canons also give her and Hades a very healthy and monogamous relationship (with the exception of Orphism, which is a bit more iffy on that front) so, disregarding the abduction part of her myth, their marriage was really relatively healthy, even by modern standards. Also, Persephone did not ‘lay the smack down on sinners’, as quoted in the original post - the whole idea of sinners is basically a Christian concept. The Underworld was not Hell. It wasn’t a place for bad people. It was just where the dead went. Tartarus was the place where the really bad guys went to be tortured and shit, and is more indicative of Christian notions of Hell. People weren’t punished in the Underworld. They just went there.
I love the idea of Persephone as a consenting wife of Hades. I am a fan of modern reinterpretations in which she chooses to eat the pomegranate seeds willingly, or where she falls in love with Hades and goes to the Underworld of her own accord. However, these are modern interpretations, based on modern gender politics and ideas of reclamation and representation. I will forever fight for people’s right to reinterpret myths however they like, but this whole idea of the ‘original myth’ of Persephone being devoid of any misogynistic undertones really needs to die.
I think it also speaks to a worrying argument that in order to empower Persephone, some people need to remove her trauma. Why can’t Persephone be a terrible dread queen of the Underworld and a survivor? Why should her experiences need to be erased in order to make her into a strong woman? If you ask me, she’s already stronger than Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. I don’t think that the modern need to reframe Persephone as architect of her own descent into the Underworld is necessarily as progressive as others think it is. I think it sends the message that a strong woman always has agency, and I actually think that a better message to send would be that it’s totally possible to lose your agency and still retain your strength, because you define yourself through your own actions, not what is done to you.

Should I read it
I think what you wrote is fascinating, especially the aspect of her empowerment. I've always understood the story as an arranged marriage in which Zeus made an awful decision (as per usual) and under-estimated Demeter's abilities. The fact that Persephone appears to find happiness doesn't change the fact that this was an arranged marriage in which she nor her mother had any choices. I think it's also telling of Hades' own role that he agrees to the separation as a way of, in my opinion, attempting to soften the blow to Demeter that despite her best efforts to protect her daughter, she still wasn't able to stop something like this from happening. I think it's also telling about how, in that time period, probably one of the only things you could hope for as a mother to a daughter, is that whoever she would end up marrying would be kind.
There was one interpretation that I did find interesting. I don't remember where I read it so sorry for not having any source: The story went that Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon were chilling and Zeus was talking about how beautiful Persephone was and getting a little gross as per usual and that Hades, who liked her quite a bit, casually mentioned wanting a wife and Zeus decided to give permission because it was like the first time he was interested in any goddess. So it was a lowkey way for Hades to protect her and he never intended to actually make her marry him but she ended up falling in love with his world even if she didn't immediately love him. But yeah, that's just a random interpretation and I thought I would add my 2 cents lol
