How do you consistantly keep the same angle on the outward poles?

What I did was dig the holes bigger than the poles to allow for stone to back fill . On the out side poles I just leaned them out against the outside top of the hole and then backfilled with stone.
I believe I used a 12 inch auger.Roger Rainville
