The succesful ones were pretty rare. That's why they became myth outlaws. When we read about their lives the story often end in "killed by gunshot wounds". So better be in the right side of the law.

Great video Santee! Glad to see my ancestor's war buddies and temporary partners mentioned. My ancestor, Charles Fletcher Taylor, left the gang after only riding for a short time. He went straight and luckily missed out on the Northfield raid.
He was a Lt under Bloody Bill Anderson and took command when Captain Anderson was killed. Fletcher in Outlaw Josey Wales was very loosely based on my ancestor Fletcher Taylor.

The distillery’s are cooking the autumn batches around here now. The corn crops are coming in, barrels are being rotated in the barrel houses, and the leaves are starting to turn beautiful colors. As the cool nights start, the oak tightens back up and the whisky is released from the char.

Good old Elmer was more successful after death than he was alive. At least earning money. We have a had a few other bank robberies here in Oklahoma where the outlaw blew the safe up and caught the money on fire. You're right about the banks being difficult to rob. You had perfect example with the Daltons and James-Younger gang. Trains and stagecoaches came somewhat easier.

Further, this was the age of a armed population and the risks had to be calculated. Santee is spot on that store robberies or express office robberies were more common but still risky.

I did know that bank robberies were not as frequent as people thought but I am learning more about how much the locals helped to protect the bank. I must say I am looking forward to your video on store robberies. Something I thought was more of a modern phenomena. Interestingly I have been reading about 18th century British highwaymen and, just like your bank robbers, no matter how big a haul they got it was quickly squandered resulting in a return to highway robbery. Interestingly they all knew it could not last and they would end up dead. But their attitude was one of live for today.

I like how you guys decide to do the opening scene at Wells Fargo, since they were around during the wild west. According to my research, there were far more train and stagecoach robberies than bank ones because, kind of like what you've explained, they're easier to rob in an isolated area than to rob a bank in the center of a town full of citizens that'll do whatever it takes to defend their money. I could understand why, since insurance wasn't a common luxury back then. Thanks for the video, and I'll see you down the trail.
You can still visit one of the banks held up by the Daltons. The Chamber of Commerce is in the same building, and if you set up a time, read a list of rules, pay a fee, and sign a waiver saying you agree to said rules and will allow a chamber representative to sit in the other room for the sake of supervision, you may go there for two hours after it's closed to the general public and look for ghosts....or pretend you're looking for ghosts and actually just enjoy two hours of private exploration of a historic building for the sake of researching your novel. The chamber representatives are pretty chill, and if you give them a heads up, they will even let you pretend to rob the bank with a fake firearm. (No one else was in the lobby, and it was my own money that I took from the counter, and like I said, I had permission and supervision; I didn't actually break any laws.)

You can still see bullet holes in the glass of the windows, and if you walk down Death Alley, you can still see scars and holes in the brick walls that I can only speculate were caused by the gunfight (Daltons vs. town defenders), and there are certain spots in the bank where you can sense a crippling fear, almost as if the fear the hostages felt during the robbery still rests in the lobby. There are also places in the bank and the alley where you can feel intense heat in your arm, almost like you're sensing the pain of the bullets from the resulting gunfight. Next door is the hardware store where the defenders got their ammo, and it's still open for business as a regular store, but the owner also has a good story about when her father met Emmett Dalton years after the robbery. Of course, they have markers at the exact spots where the town defenders were killed and body outlines of where the Daltons died. The museum is just across the street with Dalton artifacts and a nice documentary. Every October, they also act out the robbery, and then you can take photos with the actors playing the Daltons. If you drive a very short distance (maybe five miles or less), you can see the Daltons' graves. There's also an old mansion....not exactly Old Westian, but while you're in the area anyway, you may as well. This town is maybe a half hour or so from the town that has Little House on the Prairie if you want to step away from the "shoot em up" for a moment and see more of the "pioneer life" aspect. If you were in Kansas anyway, you'd have to visit Wichita. Old Cowtown Museum is set up like a replica of a Western town, so you'd have to see how it compares to the ones in Arizona. Wichita is pretty proud of its cattle drive history, and on the drive out there, you get to see a vast expanse of prairie (albeit not as vast as it was in the 19th Century). It's very beautiful, and you can just picture covered wagons and cattle drivers making their way across it, not to mention it looks like the perfect spot for the Ghost Riders in the Sky to show up. Within this area is Beaumont Hotel, a stagecoach stop that became sort of a weekend retreat for wealthy cattle barons. People say it's haunted, but I personally have never had any trouble. Apparently, the innkeeper's wife ran a "business" while a guy named Zeke tended the bar, and when the innkeeper found them together, he hired a cowboy from the stock yard to follow Zeke off sight and make sure he didn't return. Sort of the tail end of the Old West era. You can (on certain days) eat at the hotel, even if you aren't staying as a guest. I liked all these places before I had any interest in the Old West whatsoever, and then when I realized I found this time period fascinating, the visits got even more fun. For someone like you who has loved Old West history for years, it would be an absolute blast. You should definitely plan a visit one of these days. Our state also has Dodge City, but I'm afraid I can't give you my opinions on that because I've never been. It's four or five hours away, so not exactly an easy drive.

By the way, I looked into it, and apparently Dodge City's Boothill Museum is built on the same grounds as the original Boothill Cemetery, which you can visit while you're there, and it's about 10 miles away from wagon ruts left by travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. If you're willing to drive an hour or two out of your way on the route between Dodge City and Wichita, you can also see the Gypsum Hills. They look really different than what I would consider the typical Kansas landscape. We also apparently have our own version of badlands about 2 hours north of Dodge City. Again, I've never been because that's a really long drive for me, but if you came all the way from Arizona to explore the state and wanted to squeeze the most out of your tour, that might be something to consider.

Poor Bill. It's tough to keep up with technology when you've been dead for awhile. At 1:19, a side article in the paper talks about the Montana Vigilantes. Quite a wild bunch in their own right, according to a memoir that I read. Have you considered doing (or have already done) an episode about them?
I think in movies the developers wanted to make a robbery more intense and entertaining to watch because they might show you one scene where a group of outlaws successfully rob a bank and take the money but in reality like you said they weren't successful because alot of them weren't planned out before the robbery and since many towns had banks that were close to other businesses or people might have guns in their pockets it's hard to pull it off because the town folk are willing to do anything they can to protect their money
If you ever watch a movie called "The Spikes Gang" you'll see how quickly a robbery can go bad. Just people walking by or coming out of an office can foil the whole thing.

It's a duster, which is a classic Victorian era linen or canvas coat that covers your clothes so you don't get...dusty. Also, it's classic bank robber garb.
Possible video topic, how Railroads chose the towns to lay their lines through. I am in my sixties, and from a perspective of being raised in Indiana, it seems pretty obvious that having an interstate highway going through your town versus going by seven miles away from town makes a significant competitive economic advantage or disadvantage. Kind of like Route 66 your way. There must have been a lot of factors, above and below the table, influencing these decisions.
I used to live in Wichita Falls Tx, last lynching in tbe area happened in 1898, a couple of bank robers killed a teller and ended up lynched later that afternoon.
Hey Santee! Perhaps the reason why bank robberies were not that successful in the days of the wild frontier is because most bank tellers were packing a gun under their vests! In those days people were allowed to defend themselves against lawless intruders with no questions asked about whether they had a permit to carry or what caliber gun they used to gun down the criminal! The museum is just across the street with Dalton artifacts and a nice documentary. Every October, they also act out the robbery, and then you can take photos with the actors playing the Daltons.
If you drive a very short distance (maybe five miles or less), you can see the Daltons' graves. There's also an old mansion....not exactly Old Westian, but while you're in the area anyway, you may as well.
This town is maybe a half hour or so from the town that has Little House on the Prairie if you want to step away from the "shoot em up" for a moment and see more of the "pioneer life" aspect.
If you were in Kansas anyway, you'd have to visit Wichita. Old Cowtown Museum is set up like a replica of a Western town, so you'd have to see how it compares to the ones in Arizona. Wichita is pretty proud of its cattle drive history, and on the drive out there, you get to see a vast expanse of prairie (albeit not as vast as it was in the 19th Century). It's very beautiful, and you can just picture covered wagons and cattle drivers making their way across it, not to mention it looks like the perfect spot for the Ghost Riders in the Sky to show up.
Within this area is Beaumont Hotel, a stagecoach stop that became sort of a weekend retreat for wealthy cattle barons. People say it's haunted, but I personally have never had any trouble. Apparently, the innkeeper's wife ran a "business" while a guy named Zeke tended the bar, and when the innkeeper found them together, he hired a cowboy from the stock yard to follow Zeke off sight and make sure he didn't return. Sort of the tail end of the Old West era. You can (on certain days) eat at the hotel, even if you aren't staying as a guest.
I liked all these places before I had any interest in the Old West whatsoever, and then when I realized I found this time period fascinating, the visits got even more fun. For someone like you who has loved Old West history for years, it would be an absolute blast. You should definitely plan a visit one of these days.
Our state also has Dodge City, but I'm afraid I can't give you my opinions on that because I've never been. It's four or five hours away, so not exactly an easy drive.

By the way, I looked into it, and apparently Dodge City's Boothill Museum is built on the same grounds as the original Boothill Cemetery, which you can visit while you're there, and it's about 10 miles away from wagon ruts left by travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. If you're willing to drive an hour or two out of your way on the route between Dodge City and Wichita, you can also see the Gypsum Hills. They look really different than what I would consider the typical Kansas landscape. We also apparently have our own version of badlands about 2 hours north of Dodge City. Again, I've never been because that's a really long drive for me, but if you came all the way from Arizona to explore the state and wanted to squeeze the most out of your tour, that might be something to consider.

I think in movies the developers wanted to make a robbery more intense and entertaining to watch because they might show you one scene where a group of outlaws successfully rob a bank and take the money but in reality like you said they weren't successful because alot of them weren't planned out before the robbery and since many towns had banks that were close to other businesses or people might have guns in their pockets it's hard to pull it off because the town folk are willing to do anything they can to protect their money
If you ever watch a movie called "The Spikes Gang" you'll see how quickly a robbery can go bad. Just people walking by or coming out of an office can foil the whole thing.

It's a duster, which is a classic Victorian era linen or canvas coat that covers your clothes so you don't get...dusty. Also, it's classic bank robber garb.

Possible video topic, how Railroads chose the towns to lay their lines through. I am in my sixties, and from a perspective of being raised in Indiana, it seems pretty obvious that having an interstate highway going through your town versus going by seven miles away from town makes a significant competitive economic advantage or disadvantage. Kind of like Route 66 your way. There must have been a lot of factors, above and below the table, influencing these decisions.
Related to that are the towns that were born because a railroad went through, some of them pretty small... "jerkwater towns".

I used to live in Wichita Falls Tx, last lynching in tbe area happened in 1898, a couple of bank robers killed a teller and ended up lynched later that afternoon.
They wasted no time and not a taxpayers dime.
Hey Santee! Perhaps the reason why bank robberies were not that successful in the days of the wild frontier is because most bank tellers were packing a gun under their vests! In those days people were allowed to defend themselves against lawless intruders with no questions asked about whether they had a permit to carry or what caliber gun they used to gun down the criminal!
