Not sure that I've said this before, and I don't know if it will make sense, but I LOVE the fact that Shannon TALKS to US in the video and that it is clear that he is talking to us and not just talking to a camera recording stuff.
The whole presentation and casual feel of each video has been just a pleasure to watch.
EDIT: Oh wow. Thanks for all the likes...I think this is most I've ever gotten for a comment, but it is sincere admiration.
Shannon and UT are among the best and most complete hockey youtubers on the platform.

One of the many things that separates his channel from others is the lack of negativity while others will dedicate a myriad of episodes on who and what teams "suck" in the ever so tired list format. Also many of the opinions are immature and premature and there is rarely an episode that these channels upload to rectify past judgements.

    • @beckobert
      @beckobert 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Also: No completely Hot Takes, without commitment. There are so many channels where the general structure of every argument is: "This gut is an absolute bust and should be allowed near a rink. I'm not saying that he might never become a great player, but his numbers are slightly below what was expected from him".
If you have an opinion you believe in, stick up for it. If you already know it's blown way out of proportion, just don't blow it out of proportion. Shannon understands that, but it is surprising how many other channels don't.

I want to add to your point that players don't suck:
You always have to keep in mind that they are competing against other pro players. If a turnover happens it often happens because another player was just doing his job extremely well.

    • @andyvulhop
      @andyvulhop 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

This. People only see these guys compared to other elite players. In Columbus, you see guys like Jody Shelly or Jared Boll around the ice rinks now and then if you are there enough. Whenever he actually laces up, he makes literally everyone look like school children, despite being a "low skill goon" who's been retired for a while. Up close, it's unreal how skilled even the "lowliest" guys in the NHL truly are.

I've changed my mind about wearing a jersey to a game in which neither team is repped by your jersey. Jerseys are expensive and if you only have one, where is it more apropos to wear than a hockey game?? To that point, I've started wearing my Crosby jersey when I'm out and about. So far, I only wear my Stars jersey to games, but I go to enough of them that I've gotten my money's worth out of it. Sadly, my Nate Schmidt/Golden Knights jersey just hangs in the closet--but I will start wearing it out and about as well...

The biggest thing for me was learning that a lot of what makes a team successful never shows up on the stat sheet. Vegas' first season is the perfect example of this. Nobody thought they would do anything with the roster they drafted but they made the Final. Yes, part of it was because they had fantastic pro scouting to find diamonds in the rough, but the biggest thing was the feeling everyone in that locker rook had that they had something to prove. That isn't a number you can quantify, but it was so important for that team.
You need to find the right mix of guys and the right attitudes to win just as much as you do raw stats. Numbers alone will never win you a championship.

Speaking of "odd jerseys"... In 1991 Ken Linseman played 2 games (total) for the Maple Leafs wearing #13 (pre-Sundin of course). One home game (v. Washington) & one away game (@ Vancouver). I'm a life long Toronto fan and I HATED Ken Linesman, BUT I think it would be funny to have a #13 Leafs jersey with Linesman on the back. I could go blue OR white since he wore both in an NHL game, but probably blue for easier cleaning in case someone dumps a drink on me. :)

Great video. I love talking about jerseys for any sport. I hope the NHL can squeeze in a few color vs color games here and there. Not a ton, just a few. Soccer and the NBA pull it off.
Penguins in black vs Flyers in orange needs to happen once or twice a year, to name one

One of the biggest things that changed for me over the last decade is simply appreciating talents no matter what jersey it wears. Obviously I still have my preferred hierarchy of teams and enjoy watching their rivals lose accordingly but there's players I just really enjoy watching from every single team where I might have hated them based on something as silly as a logo in the past...

Your 5th opinion on ugly jerseys that end up being sought after down the road is why I picked up a retail authentic 2013 Sabres 3rd jersey (the gold front/blue back one) for $60 last summer. Regardless on if it becomes popular years from now I love the odd/less loved jerseys for being a unique part of my collection.

Major props to #3 on the jersey list! I got a Canes jersey back in 2006 during the Stanley Cup season and put 37 on it with a custom name because that's my name/number. After the playoff run in 2019, I had the custom name taken off and put Svechnikov on it. The fonts aren't a perfect match, but I love wearing it and representing the Cup run and the current successes at the same time.

I remember one summer when I was a teenager and my family and I went to stay with my aunt in Reno Nevada for a few days. I wore my blank Anaheim Mighty Ducks jersey one day and a couple of young kids asked me if I was a hockey player. I hated having to tell them no, but it just funny and sweet what those kids thought of me in that jersey.

I too stuck with blanks until I caved on a Point jersey when they had a fire sale thinking the Lightning wouldn't re-sign him. I knew we would. BUT I think we can all agree that putting your own name on a jersey places you into one of Dante's circles of hell.

I got yuh beat my friend . 😏
My first Jersey is 40+ yrs old .
Itsa CCM Nordiques home ( white in the good ole daze ) Jersey I got when I was 13/14 . Its definitely showing its yrs ... 😕
And I still wear it !
My "collection" is very meager compared to yours . 🙄
    I only collect my 3 teams . Brandon Wheat Kings 4 - Quebec Nordiques 3 - Colorado Avalanche 2 . 😎😊
I'm a prairie boy who used to constantly get jabs for the Nords .
I was a WHA fan until they joined the NHL .
    Also * was/am an Expos fan . Don't follow baseball anymore . 🇨🇦
P.S. it's so nice of your kitties to get the rest , that I assume you don't .

Cant claim I have followed Shannon from the start- but I am for sure one of the ‘oldtimers’- by chance looked him up as early as sometime in Preds deep 2017 run for the first time - no clue exactly when.
Subbed from that next season. I am not a jersey guy-but over the years Shannon has made me pick up on a lot of the subtleties regarding nhl hockey - those things never mentioned during a game for the most part.
So for me it has been a process of learning, not so much a change of opinions.

    Why do we watch?
You're knowledgeable. Shannon, on some subjects you put NHL Network and TSN to shame. You certainly do more research than they do.
You're personable. Likeable. Too bad you don't get free beer everywhere you go, because I'm betting tens of thousands of your viewers would eagerly buy you one without even much thought. That's an invitation in case you're ever in New York.
Your takes on various subjects are not just recycled sports network garbage and stock phrases regurgitated by talking heads, but a real fan's takes. It's genuine and well-thought out.
Stop wondering. We like you. A lot.
Best wishes and keep it going. I tune in every day.
P.S. the cats licking their privates is just a bonus.

I’m 2 months late on the response, but here goes. I own a dry cleaners, as nd have worked on many hockey jerseys, my own included. For the warped front logos, I use a large steam utility press and the logos come out quite nicely. Find a reputable dry cleaners in your area and they can make it good again

  • @MarcoSchirripa

I absolutely agree with the reasoning on buying blank jerseys instead of player name jerseys, but I also think that many jerseys look so much better with the names and numbers on them. Some of the less impressive Reverse Retros, for instance, look so much better in actual games with all the extra info on them. The Red Wings, Penguins, and Stars ones really stuck out to me, as I was unenthused at the reveal, but I think they look much much better when the teams wear them in games.
That being said, my James Neal and Olli Maatta Penguins jerseys did not age well.

They'll generate opinion and stimulate conversation when you wear them. And perfectly pinpoint a moment in history. Like a Naslund Penguin or Luongo Islanders for example.
