They Were Once at the TOP of the COLLEGE FOOTBALL WORLD... (The Fall of Nebraska Football)

  • Nebraska used to be feared by their opponents back in the day. From 1962 to 2001, the program built by legendary coaches Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne won 398 games, 44 more than the second-most winning team, Penn State, in that period. Since Osborne's retirement, the program has fallen off a cliff. Scott Frost was supposed to turn the program around but after four miserable years and a 16-31 record, he was fired. Now Nebraska will turn to Matt Rhule who makes his triumphant return to college football. In this video, I discuss the history of Nebraska football and how it went from the top of the college football world to the bottom of the Big Ten. Can this program be fixed?

I'd say 6 to 8 wins as I feel this defense is going to be better than most think. I'm also one that feels the Huskers will beat Minnesota the first game as Minnesota always struggles early, they're breaking in a new QB and they have no idea what the Huskers are going to do being Rhule's first game. I feel the surprise of what Rhule and his staff is bringing along with them replacing some important positions that the Huskers edge them out. I know the Huskers don't do well either in game one but this isn't Frost anymore. Just a gut feeling. Thanks for the support. GBR!

Grew up in Lincoln in the 80s and 90s as a diehard football fan, but in the last 25 years, volleyball is where it's at. Something that does not get talked about enough is when Solich left Nebraska and went to Ohio. Not only did he win there, but he also took many recruits out of Nebraska. While they weren't 5-star recruits, they were the role players that Nebraska desperately needed. Losing the homegrown talent from the state slowly ate away at the program's foundation, and they haven't recovered since.

Bro, you decimated Coach Bob Devaney's name. See other post how it sounds. Losses this year? Michigan St? Minnesota? Illinois? Iowa? We smashed Iowa last year denying them a shot at the B1G championship game. This is not a total rebuild. Nebraskas schedule rebuild year can go two ways. 6-6 or 10-2. Depends on QB and O line play. Can Nebraska run the ball? With AG and GI, sprinkle in some RJ and Sims. We shall see where we stand after the '25 season. Schedule is brutal. That's OK, iron sharpens iron. GBR ☠️☠️☠️☠️

Speaking as a Nebraska fan, we were largely satisfied with Solich's performance and Pelini's W/L record. After the wild successes of Osborne, of course we were _hoping_ for more with Solich, but I don't recall a single fan calling for Solich to be replaced at the time (media personalities and especially institutional figures are a differerent bucket).
Pelini isn't a simple story. I initially celebrated his arrival, but by the time he was fired, I was ready for him to leave. Why? Two reasons.
    1. Despite nice records technically, Pelini just could not beat a top 15 team. Worse yet, his teams had a nasty habit of getting *blown out* in those games. This happened for many years. I developed a theory that the players were breaking under the pressure that Pelini was offloading onto them. #2 seemed to confirm my suspicions.
    2. The guy had a temper. At first, it was endearing, because if felt like he was frustrated on behalf of his players at refs, etc. But in his final years, he started lashing out at people at the University, at fans, and you could tell he was taking his frustrations out on the players, too. If you get that toxic, you had better be winning national championships left and right for me to even consider wanting to keep you around.

It is all Karma for firing Solich who was a good coach. When they started firing coached after 10 win seasons it showed how insane Nebraska had become. They will always be a big ten bottom feeder. Maybe they will win 7 in a great season, but normal will be 3-4 wins.

I don't know about all that, I remember pelini didn't get along with the media at the end. The players did like pelini. He was volger, lost his filter at the end. Then the Wisconsin game was the nail in the coffin. Gave up 500+ rushing yards to a Melvin Gordon. This was bad for 2 reasons one it's nebraska strong DL play is important and he is a DL coach that's his thing. I do not remember all the details but those last few years were pretty bad.
Alot of people say he was a poor recruiter and benefited from Callahans recruits. 05 was nebraskas strongest recuting class the last 20 years.

The people who were co- responsible for destroying Nebraska Football were Bill Byrne and Steve Pederson, the 2 AD's responsible for the Frank Solich debacle. Bill Byrne gave Solich a 1 year contract after a 6 and 6 season, the worst record that Nebraska had suffered in over 40 years. And right after granting that extension, Bill Byrne resigned as AD and left to be the AD at Texas A&M, saddling Nebraska's new AD Steve Pederson with a coach he didn't want. And from comments it was pretty obvious that Steve Pederson did not want Frank Solich. Meanwhile, having picked a coach that the incoming Nebraska AD hated Bill Byrne left to be AD at a school that was in the same conference as Nebraska, the Big 12. Either Byrne should have butt-out of getting involved in keeping Solich or he should have run it by the new AD before signing Solich for a one year extension, since it was an open secret that Nebraska planned to hire Pederson when Byrne retired. Solich went 9-3 the next year, Pederson said that wasn't good enough and fired him and Nebraska had left-overs for coaching choices by the time Pederson found a coach (Bill Callahan) willing to work with an AD who fired someone who had won a National Championship as head coach and did a good job in the following the 6-6 season. Nebraska hasn't been able to hire a top coach since then.

Their is 2 very impressive things about nebraska. The fans never give up on the huskers and the players worked very hard the whole time the huskers were losing. The coach's and AD let them down for many years.

Oklahoma has not been a top program and hasnt competed with any team they found themselves up against after that Natty.
dont get me wrong i really liked that team and Josh Heupal (sp?) and it was heartwarming to see that resurgence but Oklahoma has not been rolling , theyve had teams that were really good but theyve had 20 years of losing the big games that really count including being dominated by LSU twice and being absolutely dismantled to the point it was ugly and i turned off the game against USC which is a program that still to this day since the BCS era has not had to play any top 5 programs which are LSU, Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and now Georgia.
on top of that USC has been consistently overrated for decades now
i have not seen Oklahoma field a functional defense or even mediocre ones in play outside of the Big 12.
yall have won a lot of games and stay ranked and winning that conference but Oklahoma is far from elite.

Now everyone is on TV every single week. And everyone has adopted and implemented the training they started. There is no draw to a cloudy, cold, windy school that hasn't been relevant in a single current recruits lifetime.

I doubt it- they can win but not to the level they were at in the 70s and early 80s. The game changed to a speed game versus the power football that Nebraska used. They can thank Jimmy Johnson of Oklahoma State and later University of Miami that killed the option football. Nebraska has had success since then but not to the level they had in the 70s. To sum it up a well coached team with a good passing and running offense and speed ultimately killed the option football powers.

They fired Pelini for saying "f the fans" after they walked out of a game, one of Nebraskas biggest come back wins. He was right. Unl shouldn't have fired him. F the fans.

Nebraska is the only team in the history of sport that will still fill its stadium for 10 years with the worst team in the sport...there is zero incentive to get better because people still show up. In Scotts first year, they were 0-7, filled an open date with Bethune Cookman, just to get a win, and the place was rocking. Isn't natural and certainly contributes to the poor showing and underachieving. The coaches get paid too much, as do the players, while they still do not recruit at a high level due to coaches packing it in due to their huge contracts. They need to start over with a hungry, cheaper coach.
