    Your comment about being different, I can relate to. I have Asperger Syndrome and the grief I've had over the years has made me realise to understand difference. I sincerely enjoy things that are different. Makes life interesting. I embrace it. I worked with a guy who I'm sure had Aspergers. Brilliant software engineer, but he thought it was normal that he had memorised all the STD telephone codes and that he could recognise dashboard instruments of any car - "ah, this speedo was used on a Ford Corsair between 1965 and 1968, and on a Cortina - but only GT - between 1969 and 1970". He was a walking lookup table on anythin technical. It was a standing joke that you never asked him a technical question because he would answer it at length and would then go on to answer all the related questions that you should also have asked him.
      Mind you, I'm a fine one to talk. When I was little (maybe about 5) I used to know all the houses in the neighbourhood by the patterns of the drain pipes on the outside walls.
      I remember the reg numbers of all the cars I've owned. Doesn't everyone? Maybe not ;-)

    They are called dolly wheels so that the AA vehicle can tow the Land Rover without having to use a tow truck but all the wheels have to be off the road. The same thing has to be done with black cabs and automatic cars.

      @MattBrownbill 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah, otherwise gearboxes get hot and broken.

    • @gosportjamie
      @gosportjamie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, exactly what I was going to say. If you tow a 4wd vehicle with a set of wheels on the ground then you'll destroy the transfer box, and some proper 4wds with solid axles can actually cook the axle that's on the ground due to the oil not being where it needs to be while the axle is in use. The same thing applies to automatic vehicles, if the driven wheels are on the road when it's being towed then you'll destroy the gearbox, which is why the owner's handbook says to not flat tow them other than in a complete emergency and only for the minimum distance possible to get the vehicle into a safe place. It also happens with large trucks, if you suspend tow them with the driven wheels on the ground and without removing the prop shaft then you'll destroy the gearbox as they use an oil pump that's driven by the engine to circulate the oil. Without the engine running then there's no oil circulation in the gearbox so with it being turned by the driven wheels being on the ground while being towed you will end up thoroughly cooking and destroying a gearbox that costs tens of thousands of pounds, and that would be on the towing company, hence why the recovery operatives take the time to pull the prop shaft before towing them...

    • @gosportjamie
      @gosportjamie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BobM925 Yes, exactly. The same can be done on trucks too, if the prop shaft bolts are rusted in place, but as you would need to remove two half shafts with most trucks having locking diffs, or more if the truck has multiple drive axles, then removing the prop shaft is the quicker option, if it'll come off...

      Talk of dolly wheels reminds me of when my Pug 306 shed its fanbelt about 30 miles from home late at night and I had to get the RAC to tow me home - too far to risk running on battery without an alternator, and the car was a pig to steer with no power steering. The RAC van towed me with my front wheels on the dolly wheels and we set off home. All went well until about 1/2 a mile from home on a twisty unlit country lane, when there was a loud bang, the van lurched and in the door mirror I saw my Pug start dancing about. One of the dolly's tyres had suffered a blowout! In the pitch dark, with only the van's orange flashing light on the roof and a torch, the RAC man had to unload my car, change the wheel on the dolly (yes, he carried a spare for that as well as one for the normal wheels), reload my car and take me the last half mile home. My job was to stand round the bend waving a torch to stop some pillock rear-ending us.

      Agreed, especially as there will be fibres flying around for some time quite apart from matters of practicality and good taste. But metallic pink on a family transport is a non-issue as long as the paint is sound.
      The glow plug flashing will disappear with new ones and when Ian does an oil change the reason for the leak will become clear. Engine temp in the Fiat diesel can cause drip rate to vary and is a good guide to a solution. 3rd gear change roughness was a bit of a Fiat thing in the '80s and '90s and I vaguely recall having a Strada's gate plate modified under warranty way back.
      £1K for a PROPER people and things carrier is reasonable (if there are no hidden issues) with the advantage of a high driving position, height from the road for countryside use, good seat and carrying versatility without stupid electronics and looking like a wannabee SUV -- as just about all modern cars have become. Quick hint, it is worth fitting door edge bumper thingies as the Multipla is wide and bumpers protect others as well as the owner when on the school run or in supermarket car parks.

My Wife who can no longer drive because of medical issues (one of which affected her balance and reactions in general) has had an Electric Tricycle for nearly a year this November. It’s currently off tŷe road and the battery has been sent back to tŷr supplier because it won’t hold charge.
    Our Niece brought our old 207 and still has to pass her test (Sadly at 17 she took off my beloved Hub Nut sticker! I also have an E-Bike (two wheels and it’s called an Apache) I love it! Well upshot is we were out riding together a couple of weeks ago and some bloke in High Viz leans out of a Van window to make some derogatory comment, It’s happened before. It’s like people don’t like difference. They have to say something when they see something that stands out or is in their opinion ‘not normal.’ Equally though some people on the road love the little ‘Scout Trike’ and it sparks many a conversation with other cyclists, even electric scooter riders and numerous pedestrians. I personally have always striven to stand out, be the exception and not just blend in. I love the car. Oh and my Wife Sharon is a Norwich supporter.

    In my part of the world £1000...about $1400...is a great deal for anything that runs and drives. The oil leak is just built in rust proofing. Maybe just a loose sump plug or perished oil filter base gasket. Oh, I so want to get my hands on that thing! For my own sanity and digestive limitations I’d have to de-pimp it a bit. Keep the pink wrap. Ditch the exhaust stacks and green fur inside. Oh, and paint over the gold with gunmetal gray. For a days worth of tinkering you’d have a car anyone would be proud to own....Kinda.

    Amazing still how good the car is.
    It is quite bizarre that the synchromesh on third is shot especially given the fact it creaks when going up the gears. Normally, double clutching would especially be helpful when downshifting because the gears from the lower gear are spinning faster inside the gearbox. Could indeed be related to the linkage.
    And oh I agree 120% to your opinion of the society we are in. Many people are so said influenced by the mainstream whereas that is exactly the way of how NOT to have own taste etc imho. Well put!
