      I had to repair one this week after a 16 year old had been at the controls. Not as big as this but an opening bucket off a small loader. About 250kg (550lb) it has a week point that breaks and then bends around a pivot pin before snapping completely under the force of two rams.🇬🇧

    This was one of my favorite videos. As a hobbyist starting later in life, the step by step overview for the repair, given a short video, was excellent and demonstrated how to go about a big repair. Not that I will do those, but the thought process and techniques will help me as I tackle repairs on my own small equipment.

    • @cougartrx

      I agree it's not always the operators fault something breaks. Seen many new buckets rip apart, because manufacturers don't always build to last. They build them to sell. Quality control. I've heard this too many times, the operator tore it up. Lol

      There are times, per Lincoln Electric Process Engineering, that you need to use an under-matched filler metal. This is one of those times. The cutting edges and side plates are so hard that the stress need somewhere to go. The softer weld metal deposit is that relief point.

    • @markmcallan973
      @markmcallan973 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your on to it bro! Most bucket lips I've seen rip of are due to not welding the lip whith full pen!👍

    • @bobhigginbotham9035
      @bobhigginbotham9035 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We did not full pen however we put in a heavy bevel, overkilled our stacks and put in heavy 1" plate gussets. The factory was not full pen either and the bucket owner assured me of his operator error.

    Good job . Getting done anyway possible thinking on your feet . If you want see another way look at cutting edge engineering Australia . Has few rebuilds and ones that he was able to re skin them . Way to go guys from a machinist not a welder . Keep turning and burning . Burn them rods into cash .

    In my experience when that type of material is heated like that it's never the same it will always be weaker there all that heat anneals it but replacing all that would not be cheap whatsoever

    • @bobhigginbotham9035
      @bobhigginbotham9035 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. We gave the customer the option to replace but they chose the Frankenstein rebuild route. We did stack some heavy gusset plates to help accommodate for that. Thanks for the feedback

    Question do you specialize in heavy equipment repair? The reason I ask is that I've never seen that type of bracing to the inside of the cutting edge. Outside on the bottom of bucket floor and to the side plates we put them on for wear call heel shrouds. Please I'm not knocking your welding skills, your both very good welders it just looks like more of a bandaid. Now i have seen factory reinforcements on the cutting edge to side plate but it was on huge dragline buckets or some old model machines.
