SWCP Day 1 Minehead to Porlock 4K

- I have a week off work and have come on my holiday to start Britains longest National Trail, The South West Coast Path. Join me in this video for day 1 where I walk from Minehead to Porlock.
Hi Paul, a big thank you for your posts. I’ve just started treatment for bone cancer so I can only just shuffle around at the moment. So being able to see your vids is a big moral booster. So a big thank you, for posting these, hopefully won’t be long before I can complete the SW coast path myself!👍👍👍

Love to do something like this myself one day 👍awesome vid and very well edited spectacular views and music. North Devon is where I would go but 90 miles of it is just mental lol 🤪

@@pilgrimpaul7798 I am sure it went fine, but either way, good on you for getting out on such a long trek. I am hoping to do something similar, but just trying to work out the logistics, and how many handbags it is going to cost me :)

I am a Dutch woman, 62 years old and I am planning to solo walk the Coast Path next summer. You warned me not to overastimate myself. But you also attracted me to go and see these beautiful landscapes. Thank you very much.

Hi Paul, what a great set of videos on the SWCP; you've gone to a tremendous amount of trouble to produce a very pleasant, informative, account of your journey, which will be inspirational to many thinking of joining you.
In 2012 I walked from Lands End to Barnstaple before heading inland and places further north. In early May this year I'll be following in your footsteps from Minehead to Barnstaple, before heading back to Lands End to continue the path further eastwood's.

Well my walk was easier to navigate in bad weather than yours would have been. I don’t blame you for postponing.

I've done that walk twice and the second time I went a different way out of Minehead; I walked up to the church and just carried on past that and luckily came up the hill from the other side walking past a farm. Was a climb but I think not as brutal as the coastal side.
I also think the best way down to Bossington is the inland route marked in that book you're using, it's more scenic over the hillside; I've walked both the routes in the book down that slope.
Hi Jon. I remember seeing a rather tired group of walkers climbing up that hill after the church, it looked quite steep. I wanted to take in Hurlstone point on my way into Bossington and so took that route down.

@@pilgrimpaul7798 Thanks very much. Will no doubt have some questions for you. Was due to start the SWCP in May this year but delayed a year due to Covid. Living in Scotland I still wanted to do a long distance trail so did the Southern Upland Way in August/September, wild camping, bothying and using campsites along the way. Fantastic experience. Took pics and did a few videos en route so can really appreciate your videos, especially when so carefully shot and edited. A lot of work, especially walking back and forth setting up your camera etc. I can also appreciate the distances you covered carrying a full pack, especially in that bad weather you encountered early on - 20 miles and over 4,000ft of ascent in a day is serious stuff! Very well done indeed.
Im not familiar with that trail. Are your videos on TH-cam? I am planning on doing the West Highland Way at some point. My distances and ascent figures are taken from my iPhone at the end of each day, I am not sure if that is 100% accurate but it is all I have to go by. I walk further than any guide book says by the time I have walked back for my camera etc. Sometimes it feels like I am walking the route twice!

Thanks Nick. You are tackling it like I have, a few days her and there when work allows. It’s such a great adventure. I love the camping, it adds to the experience for me. I do like to have a b&b occasionally to charge equipment. Any questions give me a shout.
@@pilgrimpaul7798 we're lucky in that we've done fair bit of Jurassic path, lived in Poole for many years, so know how tough those climbs can get LOL.

Great video! I am going to walk this distance myself some time and I appreciate to see what it's like, and to get somewhat prepared ;-) Fingers crossed for the weather, and don't walk on cliff tops in thunderstorms! :)

@@pilgrimpaul7798 I had to tell, because just a few days ago, two young women were killed by lightning during a mountain walk here in Norway. Really terrible! The bad weather came a bit as a surprise.
..lovely video, well done. What is the guide book you consult? What is 'trail mix' ?
Thank you, I am happy you like it. The guidebook is called Walking The South West Coast Path, it is by Paddy Dillon. It’s probably the most commonly used guide book for the trail. Trail mix is a snack, typically a combination of granola, dried fruits, nuts and sometimes pieces of chocolate.
Hi Paul, came across your video's after looking into the SWCP. I'm looking at coming over in April 2022 (Australian border controls permitting) to walk the first two weeks. I found your videos down to earth and very informative. It will be my first multi day hike. Just also noticed your tent is the same as the one I've just picked up too, Banshee 200? Seems to be ok?
Hello and thank you. I hope you find them useful or at least show you what you have to look forward to. Yes I have the Banshee 200. It is a solid tent and didn’t let me down. It is very heavy though and I bought a new light weight tent for my 2nd week. If you have any questions about the walk or equipment just give me a shout.

Got my first 2 weeks of accommodation booked. I'm stopping at Sparkhayes too. What was the weight of your pack? I'm hoping to carry about 12kg. Cheers.
That’s great. You must be looking forward to it. In my 1st week I think it was 14kg but I managed to get it down to 12kg for the 2nd leg. If you have any questions I’m more than happy to help.
