Respected brothers & sisters in Islam,
Question: What should we do on the 15th Night of Sha'ban?
Answer: Sha'bān is one of the meritorious months in which Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) encouraged us to perform extra ‘Ibādah. This month also contains one of the most significant nights in the Islamic calendar, Lailatun Nisfe min Sha'ban, also called the night of Barā’ah or the fifteenth night of Sha’bān.
Mu’adh ibn Jabal (Radiyallahu ‘anhu) says that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) said: “Allah Ta’ala pays special attention to his entire creation on the fifteenth night of Sha’ban and forgives all of them, except one who ascribes partners to Him, and one who harbors enmity in his heart.” (Sahih ibn Hibban; Al Ihsan, Hadith: 5665, Al Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 6776)
‘Atā’ bin Yasār (Rahimahullah), the great Tabi’i of Madinah said, “After Laylatul-Qadr, there is no other night in the year that is more virtuous than the middle (15th) night of Sha’ban.” (Lataif al-Ma’arif)
Although there are no specific actions to do during this night, all general acts of worship are encouraged in order to reap the virtues of this night. These include:
    1) Offer ‘Isha and Fajr Salah with Jama'h (for brothers): One Hadith states: “One who performs ‘Isha in congregation, gets the reward of spending half the night in worship. And he who follows that up with Fajr salah in congregation, will be as if he has stayed up all night in ‘ibadah.” (Sahih Muslim and Sunan Abi Dawud)
    2) Sleep in the state of Wudu: Hafiz Ibn Hajar (Rahimahullah) has mentioned a reliable narration that states: “The soul of one who sleeps with Wudu makes Sajdah (prostrates) at the ‘Arsh of Allah.” (Fathul Bari)
    3) Clear your heart from ill-feelings towards fellow Muslims: The Ulama Kiraam state that those who harbor ill-feelings are deprived of Allah’s mercy and forgiveness on occasions like these.
A Hadith in Sahih Ibn Hibban, mentions four people that will be deprived on auspicious nights also:
    a) An Alcoholic
    b) One who disobeys his parents
    c) One who severed family ties
    d) One who harbors ill-feelings in his heart for others
    4) Tawbah: Since the purpose of turning to Allah Ta'ala on these nights is precisely to attain forgiveness from Allah, this act is fundamental on such occasions.
    The procedure for Tawbah is:
    a. Perform two rak’ats of Salah. (Optional)
    b. Stop the sin that one is repenting from
    c. Regret the sin from the bottom of your heart
    d. Make a determined pledge with Allah never to repeat that sin. Besides the two rak'ats of Salah, the remainder are all fundamental.
Furthermore, if the sin involves usurping the right of the next person, one needs to ask him/her for forgiveness too. Without this, we are not guaranteed forgiveness.
    5) Duaa: “Duaa is the essence of Worship” and hence cannot be omitted when we engage in worship. More so on occasions when Almighty Allah accepts Duaas such as the night of the 15th of Sha'ban, one should spend a long duration in begging from Allah Taala, as we are all in need of it.
    6) Increase in Istighfār: We should seek repentance from Allāh Ta'ala for our sins and the forgiveness of our loved ones.
    7) Increase in Salawāt (Durood): One Hadith states: “He who sends salutations upon me once, Allah Ta’ala sends ten salutations upon him.”
    8) Tilāwah - Increase in our recitation of the Qurān. Those who recite the Qurān beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels.
Note: These are mere suggestions intended to make it easy for people. One may engage in whatever form of ‘ibadah one is comfortable with.
May Allah Ta’ala grant us all complete forgiveness and steadfastness on Deen, Aameen.
