- Video features rare newspaper cuttings & images from the time. Classic ballad about Irish british-army regiment the Connaught Rangers & their famous 1920 mutiny in India. In 1920, stationed in India, the Irishmen in the regiment learned of the war crimes & genocide being committed in Ireland by British soldiers & irregulars, AKA the black n tans. Led by James Daly, the soldiers mutinied and refused to fight for Britain anymore while 'their own side' was laying waste to their homeland. The mutiny was eventually stopped and the participants court-martialled, but in the end, only James Daly was executed for mutiny - the last member of the British army to ever be executed for that 'crime' - Daly remains a hero all over the world today. Read all about it in Babbington's book 'the devil to pay', it's a bit boring but very informative. The Connaught Rangers were one of the most effective regiments in the British army for over a century, heroes of the Napoleonic Wars and WW1, but on hearing of their homeland's decimation, they threw down their arms and refused to fight for Britain anymore. It is believed that Sinn Fein activists had gone all the way to India to show them newspapers from home which were otherwise denied to them
