  • High-speed trains or high-speed rail is a type of rail transport that operates significantly faster than traditional rail traffic, using an integrated system of specialized rolling stock and dedicated tracks. One of the most famous high-speed trains is the “Tōkaidō Shinkansen” bullet train in Japan. In this video, we are going to discover a Japanese model railway layout in N scale presenting high-speed model trains made by KATO. Furthermore, there are authentic buildings, vehicles and landscapes from Japan.

To those commenting on the unrealistic tight turns, well yes Shinkansen usually runs in a straight line as much as possible with long corners. But that's pretty impractical for someone making a miniature diorama. I thought this was beautiful and a fun layout to watch go by. Great work !

You know what? This was fun to watch because anyone who has a passion to build scale models builds it from what is familiar to them. So, as in looking at this video, it's a wonderful glimpse of beautiful Japanese architecture and countryside! It gives us an idea of what they see. Same as us here in America. We model what we know too.

@@pilentum It's a shame, really. Most people model based off of the area they live, which is completely understandable, but it means that people don't get to see what the hobby is like outside of their own language. I (as an American) only have access to American and British model railroading, which is a shame. Why can't I see a Brazilian layout? Or an Australian one? Or an Indian one?
I think that the hobby could go so much further if we all realized that there is so much more out there than what's in our backyard.

I totally agree hey, the scenery looks great I must admit but when it comes to the curves I think they are sharp. Even the operation is not up to point coz trains appear to have a minor power cut somewhere and it is evidential when train want to accelerate but something keeps holding them back. One more thing how can any train go from 0-200km/h just like that? I think a break delay system would've done a better job. The layout looks great hey no mistake about that.

    • @pilentum
      @pilentum  5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

All those who have written a comment so far are right: The curves are not realistic, and the trains are runnig too fast (in relation to the scale). But: It is a Japanese layout - not perfect, but almost unique in Europe!

@@pilentum I am new here. How about KATO R718 curves? Seems like the company does some long curves as well. I wasn't bothered by the curves as much as the speed. The beautiful thing about Shinkansen is how it looks when it arrives slowly at the station. Such a magnificent beast that is not using all its potential is just the nicest thing ever. It's like Porsche in a 30km/h zone, way nicer than when flooring.

      @@pilentum
It seems like the big thing people are complaining about is the short-radius S-curves. It probably would have been a better choice to split off of the dual-track sections before the turn into the station and then put a short straight section of track before the outer track's curve.

True, but even there, compromises have to be made. But to the point, I have never ever understood why N and Z-scale model railroaders still use these tight turns. Granted, many model railroaders who choose N or Z scale have even more limited space than H0 scalers, but given a layout such as the above, I would try to make a high speed line, that deserves the name. You can always hide the (necessary) tight turns in tunnels or so. And also, we have to consider that Japanese often do not have big spaces available for layouts. This is considered by the KATO track system. Maybe the creator wanted to stay true to that design philosophy.
That S-curve at the beginning of the video could have been avoided anyways. Apart from that though, great layout, I love how they managed to capture that Japanese feeling. Even though personally I am not a fan of modern trains, I love the different styling of Japanese bullet trains!

Don't like the layout. Tight curves and everything plastic looking.

It is for extremely small space and portable. It is not like hardcore scale modeling.

Japanese trains are like Rocket Ships on Rails & Japanese layouts SPEAK to me !
US Western modelers stink 👎 with phoney notions of what Model Railroading is "Supposed" to be

N scale never looks "right" with the speeds. I have given up on "prototypical" operations, in N scale, as it is just too ridiculous. I wish I had bought Lego trains, instead of model trains, let alone N scale.
    I fucking hate myself.

Why did not you start with HO scale?

@@pilentum My father had, actually, had an HO scale layout (and a fairly large one with some neat features, for what I can recall of it) when I was quite young. He tore it up and sold it all off, though, when he got bored. There used to be a group of folks that would come over and everyone would have a good time running trains. Now that I have moved back in with my folks and started working on an N-scale layout, here, dad has completely taken over the project and I am no longer involved, other than having supplied materials.
When I found I had an irresistible urge to get in to trains, on my own in my early 20's, I had been living in a small apartment on my own and N seemed "reasonable". I had not considered how "flighty" I am and how much the static-nature of a model train layout makes me go all bibbity. I want to play with my trains and be able to load them with materials and such. I want to be able to change the layout without having to destroy scenery. I do not get nearly as excited about "prototypical operations" as others seem to. I just want to play with my toys and forget that I am who I am.

@@ZiggEnt86 My Kato setup with a few Tomix or Kato Japanese shinkansen prototypes is fun. I have made a HUGE layout throughout the entire house in a half hour (snapping pieces together.) If you have enough track and the banked curve tracks from Kato, you can run your bullet trains at full throttle with no worries. Super fun, and easily collapses down into a small box for storage.
