It does in fact work. After a terrible beginning to undergrad, I took the postbac route to create that upward trend and was accepted into medical school

Dr. Gray, thank you for reminding all of us that the MCAT scores/GPA we see in medical schools stats are the median. A lot of people get discouraged to apply if they don’t reach the same numbers as the med school websites but don’t realize that there is more that goes into your application.

This was a great video Dr. Gray! This applicants story is so relatable to my journey and story, and as a black women hearing the reassurance that "you are enough" to a black man really gives me comfort. I more times than not scrutinize myself and try to find reasons that medical schools will see as red flags or aren’t going to accept me for. I apply in May 2023 I will definitely try to keep your messaging in this video at the forefront of my mind. Thank you!

I’m currently doing a post bac as an aspiring physician scientist. Have to say the opportunity presented to undergrads to pursue research is significantly undervalued. Things like SURFS can be a fantastic experience for post bacs and traditional undergrads alike!

As a paramedic and older adult finishing my pre-med, how do you think admissions weighs prior healthcare experience?

Fellow paramedic here who is in med school right now. Every med school in the US will value that experience to my knowledge. The trouble is some will more than others. Research the schools, see if you’re a good fit. Example: some schools may value research more, while others value volunteer service more (especially non-clinical). So while advantageous, it doesn’t make you a shoo-in per se.
