Woodcarving Basics: Scallop Shell Layout

  • Woodcarving is often a skill many woodworkers avoid because they believe it costs too much to get started, or it relies heavily on their ability to draw. Neither assumption is correct.
    With a small group of carving gouges and a few simple layout tools, you can easily begin adding carved elements to your work with just a little practice.
    In part 1 of this series, I identify the carving tools I use most and show you how to layout a scallop shell. You can sketch the whole thing freehand if that's your jam, but I give you easy to follow instructions and dimensions so you can draw a perfect scallop shell using layout tools you may already have.
