    What is the best way to respond to people who tell you not to count?

    • @FlamencoExplained
      @FlamencoExplained  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      My response is that the way you get to not-counting is by counting your ass off. I rarely count when I'm not teaching because I've been doing this forever, but I sure as hell counted a lot back in the day to get here. And I've had experiences with guitarists and dancers who were born into flamenco where they did something and then asked me 'is that in compás' and we check BY COUNTING. In the end it's on you to not worry what anyone says because you know you're on the path to always being in compás, even if you have to count a bit now and then. And that's the best response - just be the one who's not out of compás, whatever it takes.

    Great alternative for keeping compas. It also helps with the accenting 7&8 in lieu of 6.

    Super lesson! It's great that you cover what never gets mentioned elsewhere! I've also gone back to counting even while putting together a new falseta. It's especially great brain exercise when the falseta is all syncopated. If I can count in those conditions, I know it's getting locked in.

    Kai, what chords did you play at 1:42 ? Or did you explain them in the video

    • @FlamencoExplained
      @FlamencoExplained  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey - those are the basic chords we play 'por medio,' which means in A Phrygian (or the flamenco version of A Phrygian). Check out this video to get a lot more info about the chords we play there: th-cam.com/video/potoodj9Rno/w-d-xo.html

    Hi, Kai, thanks for another great video. Please tell me if got it right: the foot is taping 1, 2 - 4, 5 - 7, 8 - 10, 11 - 1, 2 -… and so on, or not?

    Hombre, why does the video go dark at 15:45 but it continues run in darkness until 23:22? :P Really cool lesson, by the way. Hopefully I'll get myself to work on this some day and finally master it LOL - quite the brain twister. :)

    • @FlamencoExplained

      Exporting error on our end, nothing is cut off, just a lot of black after it's over. Annoying! But sometimes this happens - this is Tara writing this BTW - I shoot and edit the videos and find it frustrating that I can't replace the video on TH-cam with a fixed version without taking this one down. Anyhow - Enjoy Kai's feet! :)

    I get the potential benefit, but right now it feels like the kids game of trying to rub your stomach whilst patting your head.
    I'll stick with it though, as I've read that this is exactly what a certain young Paco de somebody or other did.....

  • @dallemon15
    @dallemon15 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This looks like playing two DIFFERENT rhythms. The foot is in one rhythm and the guitar and hands are in another rhythm.

    • @FlamencoExplained
      @FlamencoExplained  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep - there are lots of polyrhythms going in bulerias all over the place. When you tap your foot this way sometimes it'll line up with what you're playing and other times not as much. This can make it tricky to learn, but it's super helpful!
      Cheers,
      Kai

    Why not just call the 12 the 1? I'm totally mystified as to the counting and why it's done this way and I want to understand!

    • @FlamencoExplained
      @FlamencoExplained  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Matt - The main reason is tradition. For whatever reason, this is how the people that play flamenco have counted, and that's been passed down from generation to generation. There may be a better way for you to understand it, but then you'd be left unable to communicate with other flamenco players. So this is one of those mysteries we just have to accept for practical reasons.

    • @MattLeGroulx

      @@FlamencoExplained So interesting.

    • @ChuloDavidcito
      @ChuloDavidcito 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, the 12 freaks out everyone when they start. Here's another possible reason for you.... if you're ever going to work with dancers, they count that way, because that's common practice. Actually, same with cante. Someone maybe could get away with moving to one if you only played solo guitar with no one to coordinate the rhythm with. But your instruction material is going to use 12, so resistance may be futile. :)

    • @MattLeGroulx
      @MattLeGroulx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ChuloDavidcito The thing that really messes me up is to try to still feel the 1 when I feel the 1 on the 12. There must be some rhythmic nuance that I'm not getting by feeling the 12 as the 1. Seems like once I get that it will all makes sense. I feel like I've been listening to Flamenco wrong all these years and once that clicks it'll shift my perception of the music somehow. Fascinating how different cultures feel rhythm differently. Love it!

    • @MattLeGroulx
      @MattLeGroulx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ChuloDavidcito This is a bit off-topic but I'm also really interested in how the palmas patterns interlock and I haven't been able to find a good explanation (or one that I can understand, anyway) of how those patterns work together. Sounds like the Balinese kotekan to me. If anyone can point me to some info on that I would be very grateful!

  • @emiii4346
    @emiii4346 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Buleria doesn't think so. You need to count from 12 with emphasis on 3, 6 and 8. Not for nothing it was invented...

    • @FlamencoExplained
      @FlamencoExplained  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's definitely one of the ways to count it, and a great way to start. As you get deeper in you'll find that one of the things that makes Bulerias so amazing is all the myriad ways it can groove. This is just one more way to feel it, which happens to be super useful, and one that tons of us use
