    Very informative. Never heard of using meth to quench. Although we did used to use a percentage when doing a fine gold granulation. Very cool👍👍 of course safety first but very cool. Always learning from your vids🎉🙏

    Hey Jaco! Do you quench 14k white gold in the spirits as well? Well, I think I may as well ask, do you quench each of these in spirits as well:
    White gold
    Yellow gold
    Platinum group of metals
    And any precious metals with diamonds set, or similar situations with stones
    I have always left the time for a piece with diamonds set or melee set and etc. to air cool as to not damage the stones with the temp change.
    Any time saving methods I am here for! And your marvelous work and advice.
    Thanks Jaco.

      Hi Erin, I quench mostly gold and silver. Platinum at times, but usually I let platinum relax by itself. If you have a large piece of sil/gold I’d give it a few seconds before dipping. I have found that a big plate that’s red hot can ignite the liquid so be sure to stand ready with your lid to suffocate the flame. As for stones - I tend to take the safe route. Usually I’d use heat paste or work with the stones under water to top toe around any issues. Hope this helps and thanks for the question 👍🏻

    Great tip ty, what do you use for picking solution buddy

    • @jacothejeweller
      @jacothejeweller  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for that. Over here I use a pickle powder sold from the suppliers but to tell you the truth, the best I’ve found is alum crystals. Just straight in a Pyrex bowl on low heat 👍🏻

    Excellent video Jaco. So, does using methylated spirits eliminate the need for a pickle solution step altogether? Does it get rid of firescale?

    • @jacothejeweller
      @jacothejeweller  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ooh. Great question Monty. I still use pickle in the shop but you can get pretty far without having to pickle if you use this stuff the right way. I’ve gotten far without pickle by using this then a bottle of battery acid and another bottle of bicarbonate of soda to neutralize. These days I use a pickle off the desk and the mentholated spirits for quenching. The fire scale is a whole other video. Prevention is the key there. Keep that blue flame from touching the silver and you should be okay 👍🏻 great question. Have a great day at the bench.

      @@whatsupbra43 Denatured alcohol, also known as methylated spirits, metho, or meths in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom, and as denatured rectified spirit, is ethanol that has additives to make it poisonous, bad-tasting, foul-smelling, or nauseating to discourage its recreational consumption.

    Hi, I noticed you did not drop yr piece in to the spirit ? would that not be safer as if the spirit did light yr hand is not above it to burn ? is there a rational for holding the piece in the spirit ? Let me know thanks Paul

    • @jacothejeweller
      @jacothejeweller  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Paul, I’ve lit the spirits up a few times and it only holds a small flame over the top of the liquid. Nothing too scary. What you need to look out for is over reacting if it should light up and spilling the burning liquid- running over your desk and yourself. Just casually replace the lid and it’ll starve the flame from oxygen and you are good to go.

    Why is it purple? And is there any chance it may catch a fire when you quench in methilated spirits

    • @jacothejeweller
      @jacothejeweller  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have no idea why the colour is purple Natalia - and yes, it can catch on fire so be careful. I just calmly replace the lid to starve the fire from oxygen.

    What is the exact name of the purple methylated liquid you got in the jar. A silly question from a nee apprentice in jewelry

      @The_Le_Page_Workshop 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      its called methylated spirits in the UK. its essentially denatured alcohol with some methanol and some things to stop you drinking it.
      I have used it in the past to varying results but on silver I get the best result
      using a jar of cold pickling acid

    So why not water like normal. I heard that the metho is used for gold, and not silver.

    • @jacothejeweller
      @jacothejeweller  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey David, and thanks for the Instagram follow. I’ve been using it on both all these years. It just leaves such a great finish after quenching. Like a powdered clean finish on the metal. Better than water for me. Just be careful with platinum or a big volume of silver or gold. If it gets too hot, it can ignite. But other than that, magic.
