  • In this video I'll show you how I replaced my jumper cables with a built in system under the bonnet so now jump starting the Landcruiser is as simple as flicking a switch.
This is part of 'Project80' - My ongoing mission to repair, restore and upgrade our 27 year old 80 Series Landcruiser into the ultimate low budget family touring 4WD with a total budget of around $20,000 . . . including the value of the car.

Great mod Steve. I have been told by an auto elec. that you should wait for an hour before starting after connecting the two batteries together to let the charge equalise as otherwise the secondary AGM battery will be damaged by the starter current as they are designed to only pass small currents for long periods.
I have to use two standard jumper cables in mine as I have my AGM in a ARC battery box in the back of my Prado charged by the built in 220V socket in the back.

Saw a recent, similar comment on a video I was watching on using Anderson plugs (175A) to make jumper cables. Not that long, only about 10-15 mins.

Like the idea Steve, but just an observation, since those feeds are coming directly from the positive terminals of the batteries (without a fuse or breaker that I can see), I would assume you would need to be 100% certain those cables don’t rub through and create a chassis earth no? I would hate to think a short could potentially create an explosion or vehicle fire because the cables rubbed through on corrugations. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no auto spark so I’m just thinking out loud here. I guess some corrie split tubing would add an extra layer of protection. Regardless, good hack idea. Simple, effective and saves lugging the old jumper leads around. Always enjoy your videos. 👍

You're totally right Stuart and it is something I need to check. When I put the cables in I was conscious of the potential that if they did wear through it would get ugly so putting some split tubing around them like on the winch cables is the way to go.

Might also be good when winching for extra grunt, as long as it wasn't too often. Cheers Steve

Very true mate. If you were expecting to be doing a lot of winching you could upgrade the deep cycle to something tougher.

Agree 100% with Stuart Briggs, need to be certain that there is no way it can short out. Maybe capture that as part of the install and highlight the need to be certain it can't rub through.

yenthusyep all he needs is to move that switch to one end and have an isolator switch or breaker at the other end. Or scrap the whole lot and buy a pencil case style jumpstarter. Ive started hino and izuzu trucks, boats cars etc etc.with mine and you can get them from $59 up

Great vlog! Thanks. I'm trying to do the same thing by combining a Generator Starting Battery with the Engine Starting Battery using an ON/OFF Switch on my diesel motor yacht.
Can anyone recommend a proper switch to handle the combined Marine Cranking Amps of two batteries (2,300 Marine Cranking Amps. when both batteries are combined.)?

Hi sir! Can u xplain it in detailed video how did u make that built in jumper cable pls?😊

We have gone from an old style isolator switch dual battery system to a CTek system so the old isolator is now redundant. Initially I thought about just removing the (now) unnecessary battery isolator section and just leaving the switch in place. I don't see any reason this would not work BUT what if I find someone stranded who doesn't have jumper cables and I don't have any either? The weight of a set up jumpers really isn't a big hassle so in the end decided to let sleeping dog lie :)

Great idea Steve , just an observation, you won’t be able to help someone else start their car if they don’t have cables

I put the switch on the dashboard. I didn't want it to be so inconveniently placed like those old hand cranked starters.
