This is one of the best battery step by step videos I have dealt with. Successful on my first attempts. Of course it’s kinda a pain in the rear but hey that’s why it’s in the back 🤣🤣🤣
For all those newbies out there: This is an excellent video tutorial on how to replace the battery. BUT, it does not include the final crucial step. You need to perform what's called a battery recode using an OBDII scanning tool like OBDeleven or VCDS, to tell the vehicle that you have installed a new battery. The reason is because over time as the battery degrades, the charging system will increase its charge in order to keep the battery at full charge. If you install a new battery into the vehicle without performing the recode, the charging system will think the old battery is still in the vehicle, and continue to charge it like it was an older, worn out battery. That will result in an overcharged new battery, which may mean a short lifespan. To sum up: 1. Replace the battery as shown in this video. 2. Either perform the battery recode yourself using either OBDeleven or VCDS. Or pay the dealership to perform the recode for you. It's beyond the scope of my reply to discuss the recoding procedure, but just search for it on TH-cam and you'll find some videos that will walk you through it.
Probably easier with Vise-Grips/Locking pliers, as long as they have a slightly curved gripping area you probably could. Those bolts shouldn't be torqued too hard since there's no dynamic load it has to support.
Yes, these vehicles are overly complicated. If you want to own an Audi / VW you should definitely buy a set of triple square sockets. Also be prepared for lots of expensive repairs, especially if you can't even buy the tools for simple repairs.
I have 2 questions, 1. You put memory saver, what is a reason for it? 2. If you put trickle charger to keep up charge the battery where it will be connected?
Such a Nice video. And lovely to see an old clean battery installed nicely in a German car versus a real dirty battery from a Japanese engine compartment 😂😂😂😂
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I believe that the car is required to be coded to the new battery. This is needed so that the alternator charging is aligned with a newer battery in order to prevent damage or shorten the life. Does this need to be done by a dealer?
Thanks for watching. Some vehicles do need to have a registration reset process done. We would recommend visiting your mechanic or dealer for this process.
On my 2023 Q5, the trunk floor panel is a hinged two section panel that only exposes the rear speaker and spare tire. There is a third panel that apparently covers the battery, but I can not see how to remove it to expose the battery.
Thank you, excellent instructional. Any thoughts as to the lifespan of a battery in a cold climate (Upstate NY)? I have a 2015 still with the original battery. It seems strong but I'd rather not be stranded.
Hi - Thanks for watching! Heat is the reason Batteries fail sooner than expected. Batteries in the South are generally replaced more often than batteries Northern climates. Cold weather places more demand on the battery for starting purposes but a properly maintained battery and charging system usually results in the battery lasting as long as expected.
Hi - Thanks for watching! Some late model vehicles do require battery registration with the vehicle’s battery management system. We suggest that you check the vehicle owner’s manual or a service/repair manual to see if your vehicle has this requirement and how to do it.
Hi- Thanks for watching! They were connected to another 12 volt battery. Check out our video on Memory Saving. The link is in this video’s description.
There are positive and negative terminals under the hood for jumping. That’s where this video shows to connect the memory saver. They’re on the passenger side, near the firewall.
Mentioned it's recommended to hook up to computer memory, what if you don't do that? I heard an Audi mechanic state the car computer will figure out the new battery and doesn't have to be an Audi battery...is that true?
Hi - Thanks for watching! We suggest that you check the vehicle owner’s manual or a service/repair manual for the vehicle to be sure as many early models need registration.
Just dealt with this on a 2020 Q5. Yes, these vehicles are for people who fall for the flashy car, then find out later their reliability ABSOLUTELY sucks. Even with the right tools I couldn't get the positive battery terminal to come off all the way. I was afraid that if I forced it I would break something. Overly complicated pieces of garbage that start to fall apart after four year, if your lucky, and expensive as hell to fix.
It’s a pretty stupid reason. Not to choose a car. Especially when you’re talking about a high quality German craftsmanship compared to flimsy Japanese cookie cutters. You’re not cut out for a luxury car clearly. Especially because when you purchase a luxury car, the shop does all the work for you because you’ve got the money to let other people do your bidding. People that can afford an Audi don’t fix their own cars.
We have our audi for 6 years now 176,000 on the dash no problem , battery replacement is easy . Also I own a 2011 Mercedes E350 , garage kept looks like new 49,000 miles run like brand new I own it 11 years now , in the past I had Nissans and Hondas the worst cars ever especially that accord it’s a junk
Hi - Thanks for watching! We don't always have that information here in the studio. We recommend that you check the vehicle owner's manual or a service/repair manual to be sure.
My AAA guy said the same thing on reset battery program for Audi Q5. He can not change my battery. What a pain. I owned few cars since 1977 and this is a first pain to replace just a simple battery.
This was great thanks👏 And for those who think it’s a pain in the rear😉, it’s also the best place for the battery. But yes it’s true German engineered vehicles are never simple😅but there’s nothing quite like them! This is my fifth German from my first VW Super Beetle (wish I still had her!😢) through BMW & now my 2nd TDI. Such a shame VAG had to mess up with diesels, but at least that pushed them fast into the electric foray, especially out of necessity in the USA.
Till they start falling apart 4-5 years after you buy them. The needless complexity, horrible reliability and expensive maintenance is ridiculous. But your right, there's nothing quite like them 🙃
Hi - Thanks for watching. The cables were connected to a host battery. Check out the video in this video's description on memory saving procedures. th-cam.com/video/vSP3ShcaFgQ/w-d-xo.html
You can connect on front- engine side. There is a small plastic ( red color) remove it then contact ( + ) wire after that you can connect the ( - ) wire on the car's body any where .
I have a 2014 Q5 TDI and after watching this video discovered my trunk looks nothing like this. The battery is all the way at the rear of the car behind the spare tire.
The usual Audi nightmare of complexity and plastic. Nice video, but I found myself wincing when the demonstrator had to lift that heavy battery out and put it back in again. At least he deserves an assistant for that?
Hi - Thanks for watching! We used a 12 volt battery connected to the "jump posts" (1:49) for this replacement. Check out our video on memory saving. The link is in this video's description.
Friends who care about their friends, don't let them buy Audi's or VW's 😅 I could only get the positive terminal half way off. I didn't want to force it off, worried I'd break something. Ended up having to call a tow truck because the vehicle won't start, even after charging up the battery overnight... 2020 Q5 w/ ~40k miles. Has also had overheating issues and went haywire right after having it serviced at the dealership.
Not hard to jump the car, there are terminals under the hood. Look at the manual. My old BMW X3 could be jumped from the trunk or the front. The battery was easy to change in the BMW

What a complicated procedure! Can you remove the battery hold-down-strap bolt by using channel lock pliers?

Surely not. If you replace the battery with a compatible capacity battery, you will have no issues.

What about the programming? Don’t you need to update voltages vis OBDII somehow? Dealer said that needed to be done or could burn out alternator?
Hi - Thanks for watching! Check out our videos on battery registration (programming). The links to them are in this video's description.
Is there some kind of reset after the battery change? Was told if I took it out I’d have to program something.???
