I had the absolute pleasure and honor of meeting Val in 1987 at the Cliffs Pavilion in Westcliff, Essex. At 15 I was the youngest audience member (I didn't know that was going to happen) just the performance my Mum and Nan had booked was a late night show. He sang a song I really liked and some of us stood up to clap the song and he saw me, walked across the stage and said to me, its wonderful to see younger fans here at my show..... after the show I got to meet him and he gave me a handshake and a hug. Its a memory I will never forget.

Great to see Val again. I always loved his programmes during the 60's & 70's. My daughter was most put out when she was taught Rafferty's Motor car at school. "In their version - the words are all wrong," she said, as she had heard the true version while her Mum was playing Val Doonican's record.

I'm in my early fifties here too and agree with all the other nice comments about Val Doonican. A thoroughly lovely man who has always rewarded me with wonderful memories of my childhood. I recall trying to sing Delaney's Donkey as a youngster and still remember quite a lot of the lyrics now. He stands out as one of the people from TV I am most fond of. I always thought he looked like my Dad and he is almost the same age too.

When I was a young lad Val Doonican was my favourite entertainer on the t.v. I can remember on Saturday nights when my mum and dad were about to go out and telling my older brother " let him have Val Doonican on later " and when the show started sitting in front of the telly and not moving until Val had sung his final song from that old rocking chair . Wonderful memories of a truly great singer and entertainer . R.I.P. Val and thanks for the memories .

Great to see Val Doonican. I used to watch his show in the mid 1960's on a Saturday night with my parents. Brings such good memories when I see the shows on youtube and BBC 4. TV stars didn't have the big ego's that they have today they just were professional and had dignity.

Like many families we always watched the Val Doonican show we always enjoyed every show it was very family orientated it’s a shame that this type of programme no longer exists, it always brought the whole family together. God bless Mr Dooonican for his wonderful voice and gentle manner he is much missed.😌

Val Doonican was one of my most favorite singers, he was the ultimate in easy listening. He was a most most modest man, and would prefer to talk about the success of others rather than himself. It will be a very long time before we ever see the likes of such a person again. I still listen to his songs, my favorite is his version of "Elusive Butterfly".

Mr Doonican was an excellent singer and he had a lovely easy charm about him, but I was surprised to learn that very few of his albums have ever been released on cd and his former manager said Val's music has not stood the test of time, whatever about that, he is an example to today's pretty poor generation of entertainers on how it should be done.

We used to watch his show every time it was on and loved the funny songs. Sweet memories of my dear mother enjoying his gentle songs on the rocking chair. When I got a bit older, I used to like playing "Paddy McGinty's Goat" as a hornpipe on the bagpipes.

The BBC studio Val talks about was a converted Methodist church on Dickenson Road (or, to locals, affectionately Dickie Road). When it was demolished, houses were built on the spot. There is a round black plaque commemorating the studio and the programmes, people etc. who worked there.
Val Doonican is a true Irish LEGEND. I also grew up with him on the telly and on the record player. I love him to bits. God bless you, Val!
