- Flowerhorns are very unique and amazing fish that change colors to show you how they are feeling. These are some of my experiences with my flowerhorn changing colors when he was stressed.
Stressed colors are:
Vertical black stripes
All white body
All dark body
Faded black spots(the flowers)
I’ve compiled Foo's old videos to show you what the changes in your flowerhorn's colors might mean.
*Change in colors during mating might be something different. I've never bred flowerhorns before, so I do not know much about it.

Wow! I love how closely you observed your fish.. love all your videos so far.. started planted tanks and it's nice to notice that when you switch off the lights and let's say put it on after an hour .. some of the plants shut and in the morning when I put on the lights with other light sources the leaves slowly open.. fascinating

How long did it take for your Flowerhorn to get comfortable enough in his new tank that he actually came out from hiding? I turned my lights off and will just let my 3 fry get use to the tank before I start with any dividers and pick out the one that I want to keep. I found a breeder that sells SRD's for $12 ea. and he has a good reputation. Time will soon tell.

My 3 inch FH his color become darker and have stripes in it all of that happened when I covered the aquarium floor with small rocks and gravel
Foo the flowerhorn. I had to remove the rocks today when I did a water change and few hours later his color change it's not darker anymore. I think he turn back to his normal color.

I once own flowerhorn....but that fish so active and abit aggressive. Always swimming following my finger or side to side aquarium if he see me walking past by the aquarium. Yes, he does bite my hand once when I try to rearrange the deco inside the tank. Sadly, he pass away from infection. I try my best to cure him with medicine but he didn't recover well.

Thanks alot...yes I saw many people do it using small syringesbut many of them mixed meds (flagyl) with food pellets..should I mix food pellets too ??
if your fh eats food, you should do the mixing with food first. you should do the syringe method if he doesn't eat food at all.
my flower horn had balcked and stressed but took various stepss and his black she vanished he has become very very active but that black stripes are still not gone at the back, please help he eats and plays but black stripes are are sometimes dark when light are off for a while.
It's quite a research which you have made. Just now seen your video, you have a great insight. Recently i have bought a Flowerhorn SRD. On the first day, it was good. After two or three days, it started losing its colors and getting darker from the tail and the black markings got dimmed. I don't know the reason. I am using the submersible powerhead filter and it has a great pulling force. And my tank has a mirror finish bottom and i am using the bare bottom tank. Regarding my water it has chlorin, but i am using aged water only. I need your help, i would like to share the images for your reference. But the fish is active and there is no signs of disease and stress stripes. I have already contacted the breeder regarding this issue, but he said may be water quality. Please help me resolve this issue. Thank you

Thank you so much. My flowerhorn dropped 5 ft onto the ground too and I can't figure out if theres anything wrong with him. His colors turned completely white, similar to your picture. Another thing is that his "letter" and scale are turning yellow too... Is this a thing? I can't seem to find any info on it. I also need to get a lid.
He's in shock basically. His colors should return in a few days to a week or so. Yea, the "letters" can fade in color if he's stressed, also. They will come back to black when he's feeling better.

hard to say without knowing the history or your fh, but I would add some stress coat and see if things improve. after your fh gets better, use anti-bacterial medicine for the lips.
I found that my flowerhorn's poop is a white thin string. So can we confirm that it is intenstinal infection? And should I use clear?
usually yes. sometimes, if it occurs once, then if she poops normal, then everything's ok. but if she does it all the time, or often, or periodically, then you gotta use medicine.
add some non iodized salt. also add water conditioner.

I'm looking to get a flowerhorn and i was wondering if a 60 gallon would be a good tank size. If it is do I have to incrementally increace the tanl size or can i start with a 60?
60 is pretty good. starting out with it would be the best. your fh will get big pretty fast depending on how much you feed him.

that video shows how I dealt with it, but he was still eating. if your fh is not eating, you might have to take him out of the tank and administer the medicine using a syringe directly in to his mouth. I've never done that, so I don't know what medicine to use. I'm pretty sure I saw someone doing that on youtube somwhere. try "how to treat flowerhorn internal parasite"

Hey, my FH has like these warts that grow beside his head it seems to shrink then disappear then appear in another place. I don't think this is normal. Any suggestions?

And few days later his been very2x active and play around but the color is still dark till today. But he's very healthy and very playful.
hmm. sometimes adding lots of gravel or rocks can change the ph level. depending on the type of rock or gravel. try big water change and see if things improve.

cute looking fh! since there's a black mark on the dorsal fin, it's most likely a female. usually 80% of the time.

Hello, yesterday I got new red dragon flowerhorn , he has all black vertical stripes and he is not moving and staying in one corner. My tank was in use since last two months in which I had chicklids. He had two pellets yesterday and two today. Is there any reason to worry ? Thanks
It can take a week or more for your fh to get used to the new tank water and the environment in general. if your fh is eating, don't worry too much and wait a few more days and see if his colors come back. try to leave him alone most of the time. if you think the water is not the greatest, might want to try 50% water change.

what I used wasn't good for my fh. it was too strong. I wouldn't recommend what I used. instead, Fish bendazole, or NO-planaria would be safer.

How big is the tank?
He’s probably good by now but mine did the same thing, it’s the stress from being moved in the bag and being put into a tank with a different environment and water parameters. Once they acclimate to a new environment they become normal again.
this might be 3 years ago, but if your wondering what's wrong, the truth is nth to tell yet, if you drop your fish in the fish the first day, they will not eat, feed the other fish to show them it's feed time

no, keep your fh in the tank when doing water changes. just try to match the temps of the new water to your tank's water.

So basically its not the real reason why flowerhorn becomes colorless or fade . Coz u said that it jumped. Welp i wonder what about if it didnt it just fades and returning to orig color vice versa. I observed this when im feeding it but its very active and will jump to the im putting food on

yea, if your fh likes the taste, then it's good. protein content is average on that food, but if your fh eats a lot and digests well, then it's all good.
Foo the Flowerhorn I was also thinking about trying okiko plantinum any thoughts on that food ?
I've never tried that food, but I can tell you that humpy head grew head pretty well and body color was pretty bright. hikari cichlid gold made the pearls brighter. then I got cheap and bought aquamaster flowerhorn pellets. that only has 40% protein content, but it was cheap and I gave it a try. it made my flowerhorn's colors fade a bit. I pretty much stopped feeding that. anyway, yea, I've heard pretty good things about okiko.

I just use tap water with dechlorinator. for food, get good quality pellets with lots of protein in them, and freeze dried river shrimp for good colors.

yea, if your fh likes the taste, it's good. yea, high protein diet it what you want for growing head and body. yea, usually people include the tail whenn measuring.

hmm...b/c of the quality of the picture, it's kinda hard to tell. I think it looks like a short body FH. he's probably 3 months old or so...he's too young to know the quality. it takes a while for the colors to show up.
its also good that you got a very young FH.... its really fun this way... he will become more of a friendly pet with you... interract with it a lot during feeding minutes...... he will grow up to be an awesome FH trust me... learn more about giving the right environment....
keep a good filter.... do partial water change instead of complete..... keeping a heater is must...... try feeding high quality (expensive) pellets.... and suppliment it with frozen dried shrimps or krill....

Why is your fh in a 32? Just wondering cuz I'm thinking of getting one but everyone is recommending 75.
if you look through my channel, it's all about fh care. I started out in a very small tank, then went to 32 with 10g sump, then his final tank is 55. he seems to be doing fine in 55 but I think it's bare minimum. you can start out with a small tank and upgrade as you go. or if you like, just start out with a 75 if you don't want to upgrade down the line. it'll take over a year for him to get really big enough to make use of all of the 75g.

it's hard to say without seeing your setup and more details. is your tank cycled? if not, you might have to do more frequent water changes. try 30% water change and see if things improve.

If he doesn't get scared, no. If he gets scared, yes. He will only need it for a few months. When he gets bigger and confident all the time, remove the hiding spot so he doesn't injure himself on it.

mr foo..6 days ago i buy 2 fh.then i divide them with clear partition.then one of them was so scared and panic,he run smash into the wall of aquarium back and forward.now he dont want to it..another fella just shy2 but he will eat everytime i feed him.is this just normal for new fh into my new tank.by the way my ph and ammonia and aquarium temp is fine.
sounds like your fh got spooked. wait a few days to see if things improve. why did you use a divider? did they fight?
yup they fight even with divider..should i wait a week to let him be cool..bcoz he wont eat either.
but if he spook why his colour i think its ok.. not pale..
they might cool down or they might not. you might have to get a non-clear divider if they don't. stress color also could be not just pale, but dark or dark vertical stripes.

He's too small, so he might not be confident, yet. Also did you just get him? It can take a while, like a week to a month for him to get used to the environment and you. Don't go too close to the tank for a week or so, but feed him and watch him from a little far away. Also, giving him a hiding place is good idea until he's confident that you're not going to eat him.

Thank you for replying. I think our tank is small, and it cause her stress. Also, the heater or ( i dnt knw what it is) but the one that gave heat in the water,broke. So whenever I change the water, I don't mind the temperature, just its room temp.
hmm...yea, FHs need to be in warm water. you should get a separate thermometer in the tank so you can check the temps every day. hope your fh recovers his colors soon.

Just give him good food and make sure the water quality is good. He'll get his colors back soon. It can take a week to a few weeks. Or it could take a day or two.

don't use your finger if he gets scared of it. use food to train it. but do it for only 5 seconds or so. if you do it too much, he might get stressed.

did you just buy your fh? then your fh needs to get used to the water and the tank and you. that takes time. it can take a week to a month for your fh to get used to all those things. black stripes means he's stressed. he could be stressed from the water, or the new environment, or scared of the owner. I would suggest leaving him alone and don't bother him for a while. and don't tap the tank to get his attention. you can scare him by tapping on the tank. he looks fine and healthy. just needs time to get used to things.

one of the fins is stuck to the body? you might have to take the fh out and gently seperate the fin from the body using a toothpick or something. very very carefully.

i have 3 fh
my main male fh (3inch) is turning dark when i start to feed him or aproche the tank!
he is always beside the water heater and the water temp is at 28c in a 55gal tank,
he will relax and swim around and turn white and noticable black stipes but i never seen him with a plain white/red...
i have 2 other (2inch) from the same birth his brother and sister the other male is small but he is always white and start to grow his kok and more red is apearing! (lives in 30gal)
and another one the female is always black or gray!
i feed them 2 times a day with a mix of OKIKO blood-parrot/platinum/head up/red head and (only every week) some freeze dryed shrimp and blood worms
water changes are always done and rocks clean and filters 2 days later
