Vision is so badass. Ultron-5 created him to become a slave but he chose to defy his programming the minute he was born and join the Avengers. Plus he put Tony’s arrogant ass in his place.
You said Vision made a heel turn ,but to make a heel turn ,you must be a good guy that turns bad, but what you ment to say is Vision made a face turn. A face turn is a bad guy turning good .
Technically, both are correct. The Vision's body is that of the original Human Torch, a good guy; his brainwave pattern is derived from Wonder Man, another good guy who albeit, briefly took a wrong path that led to embezzlement and his subsequent physical transformation at the hands of the original Baron Zemo - he fought the Avengers alongside the Masters of Evil but came good again at the end and aided the Avengers in defeating Zemo and his cronies. Vision was then created by Ultron as a tool, utilised in defeating the Avengers; however, his basic "personality" could not accept this, and he rebelled against Ultron's programming. So, in this instance, the comment in the video is both correct and incorrect at the same time - a sort of Schrödinger's Josh. ;)
What is important to understanding comics of the time is that superheroes were a new (and alien) concept for comic book writers. Before the advent of superheroes comic book writers were of three distinct ilks: romance comics, horror comics, and “manly adventure tales” (soldiers, cowboys, spacemen, etc). When asks to write superhero stories, each writer went back to o what they knew. That’s why all the early Spider-Man stories read like romance comics with overblown themes of teenage relationship angst.
but the thing is superheros werent an alien concept because we had them in the golden age DC comics came out with superman in 1938 i think and batman a year later then marvel at the time known as timley comics had cap for ww2 propaganda stories and so on
Something that I've been wondering about is that if Vision is a synthezoid and is every inch a human being, but all his bodily organs are constructed of synthetic materials, then when Vision was showed disassembled in the SWORD lab in WandaVision, why did he have wires coming out of his disconnected head and neck, similar to the stereotypical android such as Data from Star Trek?
Only John Byrne can answer that. Although to me, it looked like Byrne was trying to turn the Vision into a version of Data, which included erasing his emotions and "bleaching" his skin to match Data's.
Isaac Asimov did not introduce the word “robot” to the English language. If you ever read the anthology I, Robot one of the things you’ll notice is that at no point does Asimov explain what the word means. That is because the word had been in common usage in English for thirty years. It was created by the writer of the play Rossum’s Universal Robots which ironically was about synthezoids like the Vision, rather than our current idea of robots. It was popularized by the anti-soviet movements of the time.
I love the behind the scenes and back story! My great uncle was an artist on the hulk comics and i wished he could tell me stories of the early days with Jack Kirby and these videos full a bit of that open space in my heart. Many thanks!!!
Another great video, Josh! Vision is an awesome character, and in comics has really been put through the wringer over the years. Those old-school artists and writers really knew their craft, whereas todays self-styled "creatives", who should be standing on the shoulders of those Silver Age giants, barely have their feet on the bottom rung of the crab-ladder... (in my humble opinion). Stay safe, Dude. :)
Gardner Fox revived an old character as an android around the same time in JLA, Red Tornado. I wonder if he an Thomas coordinated that, since the two men were friends.
@@johnnyskinwalker4095 The interesting thing about your example is that the respective writers, Len Wein and Gerry Conway, were sharing an apartment at the time.
I'm so glad you are doing these types of videos again I love you're video on Ang Lee's Hulk movie still waiting for the 90s X-men cartoon dark phoenix done right video 😂
I feel like Vision was far less whiny in the comics. More scary and badass. BTW Vision made a face turn not a heel turn! A heel turn is for good people who turn bad.
Asimov didn't introduce the word "robot" to the English-speaking world. Have you never heard of the play "R.U.R" by Karol Kapek, first performed in 1921 and then translated into 30 languages by 1923? It was very popular in its time in both Europe and North America.
Do you think there's any chance marvel studios will use characters like Mephisto and Ghost Rider or do you think they won't do it because of China and their strict mandates

I love how I can read a ton of comics with a character in it, and then be blown away by deep backstory. Thanks for a great vid!
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Fantastic video, as always. Avengers #57 is a truly brilliant story, and you did a tremendous job of explaining what makes it so great.
i really feel bad for vision because he really doesn't deserve any of this shit.
The B-roll and the deep dive into comics lore are absolutely exceptional, dude. Great work.
Thanks man, much appreciated!
Dude! This video blew me away. You had me captivated from the get go. Your b-roll never seizes to amaze me. This is some serious TV level stuff, man.

I hate when marks use wrestling terminology out of context

They've veered from the comics which is a pity. But explaining a synthezoid might have been too much to cram into a movie already long and busy.
Only John Byrne can answer that. Although to me, it looked like Byrne was trying to turn the Vision into a version of Data, which included erasing his emotions and "bleaching" his skin to match Data's.

This bit is just GOLD!
This was one of the best slow burn, "wtf is happening?" Moments in media history. So well done

That's really interesting. I'm nowhere near as familiar with DC stuff as I am Marvel but I'm going to look into this.
it happened a lot in history between Marvel and DC like for instance Man-Thing and Swamp Thing were created about only months apart.

@@PanelstoPixels Thomas has hinted about it over the years . . . .

Great show I miss it already, the Vision is my favorite MCU superhero now.

Fantastic analysis. You explored the complexity and tragedy of Vision very well.
Thanks, glad you liked it!
From that cover debut, i now see mephisto more than i ever did watching Wandavision or Erik Voss rants. Thats almost 100% mephisto on that intro cover
Avengers #57 is probably my favorite comic book cover along with The Mighty Thor #337, Beta Ray Bill.
I know I'm two years late to this party, but the best AI robot turned evil story is Alfred Bester's "Fondly Fahrenheit" (1954)
This might sound a bit cliche...but I’d honestly be curious if you’d videos like this for Etrigan, Ragman, Scarecrow or Spawn.
Cool
Spawn vid is in progress and will be coming sooner than later.
Your videos are amazing. I love seeing all the layers behind pop culture. You rock!
Thank you so much!
Wait, what. I had no idea that The Vision was the second Marvel character to use that name
Great show. Impressive.

Pappap pa pappa wandavision is stuck in my head
I own Avengers 57 😉
I'm green with envy. Oh no wait, it's just toxic ooze.
This was a great video!
I reeeeaaallly need to watch Wanda Vision.
Thanks! You should, I'm missing it already. Best MCU anything in a long time.

Middling stories? There were some great avengers stories back then. The 80’s and 90’s were middling stories. You got it wrong on that one.
Banger video

They need to make a movie about the suffocating and horror of American ghettos
Frankenstein's Monster was a jerk
Man I'm getting sick and tired of getting force-fed this "phony ideals of middle class America" bullshit.
The analysis was great, but calling Whedon a F*ckwit in the end kind of tanks the feel of the video. It was really unneeded.
