  • Gray water is some thing that can be used in your garden for your plants when You are underwater restrictions. turns out that waste water can in some cases actually increase your yield as well.
When there are water restrictions, your garden is not allowed to be watered in many cases. One of the ways to turn this around via white waste water. If you start collecting water now, you will be better off later this summer.
your water demands for plants at the moment are not very high but with rain barrels and collecting gray waste water, you increase the likelihood of success.

Ashley has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are TH-cam, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s TH-cam channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her TH-cam channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

GIC Crew, as a gardener the idea that we can run out of water is not fun, Calgary’s water issue this time seems like it was a water main break. But with a potential drought on the horizon storing up water sounds like an awesome idea 😅
Here is that drain spout thingy geni.us/HYP4SqR

I dug a small pond this spring. Put a liner in it. Right now holds about 3000 gallons. But then had to add a pump to keep it moving and a sand filter. Working on making a fountain feature that also incorporates sand filter. Clay filter too slow. 😂 Where I'm at that means some solar panels for power too and a battery if I will need it on cloudy day. It comes with its own challenges.

A consideration in using the drain spout thingy is that asphalt shingles are the most common on roofs in the US. That is the one place where you do not want to collect rain water for health reasons. It's unfortunate because that is the best way to collect the most rain. 😢

Thank you so much for posting this! As a resident of Calgary I can only shake my head in bafflement that there is a zero use for gardens while indoors is on the honour system. I would cheerfully not do laundry, cleaning, and limit showers but plants will die with no water. We immediately started keeping bowls by each sink and plugged the shower for hauling outside and your scientific analysis is a great help. I have to wonder why the City of Calgary is not reminding its citizens of these facts.

Calgary also here, I am under a boil order so its even more taxing. I went to my uncles farm for a shower and took some water home for my flowers (just a little) since he is on well water. Hopefully this is over soon without too many more restrictions after the pipe is fixed. Peace

So a few years ago, the wife demanded I get a water softener system installed. I didn't give it a second thought, and continued using tap water on the garden, only to see it steadily fade away and die. I didn't make the connection until it was too late! It's been three years since I switched to captured rain water, water from the dehumidifier (for indoor herbs) and even water from the river a kilometer away. The garden has slowly made a comeback, and I've learned a very valuable lesson.
Thanks for the video, Ashley!! ❤❤

I remember having a water softener when I was a teenager. It had a switch so we could turn it on and off. When Dad was watering the garden he would turn it off. Sometimes he would forget to turn it back on before someone took a shower. There’d be a yell from the bathroom to turn it back on. Our well water smelled bad if it wasn’t softened.

Good advice to prepare for water shortages, but Calgary's issue is because of a huge water break that has basically taken their biggest treated water system almost completely off-line. So, it's not as much a source issue as it is a distribution issue. Any city would be susceptible to these unexpected vulnerabilities, so, yes, know what you can reuse!

Chlorine doesn’t stay in water for long. If you worry about it, let the water sit for 24 hours before using it in the garden. Some municipalities use chloramine. That’s more stable and will persist. Personally I don’t think chlorine is a big deal, either.

I run a food security program and design food growing systems.
When asked about runoff from the roof, I cite studies showing the presence of pathogens like salmonella from birds.
Also, roofing material is made from hydrocarbons and immediately began to degrade and will runoff into the water as well.
I tend to discourage the use of rainwater into the garden as the plants will uptake chemicals and the soil may be contaminated from salmonella.
Despite this, great information and very needed!

As far as water softeners go, if you have one make sure to test your water's hardness. You can do this easily with a water hardness test kit. It's usually the case that water softening systems are only connected to the water line which feeds the water heater so that only HOT water has actually been softened. Cold water remains unaffected by the water softener, so it should just be treated as hard water when used for watering plants

    • @margaretmarshall3645
      @margaretmarshall3645 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Interesting. I have a water softener, but my fish tank water always tests as very hard. I actually use the water from my RO filter, but still it shows as hard. Maybe it’s because that’s unseated water?

    • @chongli297
      @chongli297 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@margaretmarshall3645 If the water straight from your RO filter tests hard then you may need to change the membrane. Unless your RO filter includes a remineralization step (some of the units meant for drinking water do this as it improves the taste). Otherwise your water may be going into the aquarium soft and getting remineralized by the substrate. Do you have any hard-shelled invertebrates (shrimp, crabs, snails)? They tend not to do well in soft water long term as the water will leach the minerals straight out of their shells/exoskeletons

What about reverse osmosis? Is that better than softened water?

The question I have about pasta water -- I've heard to use this on plants before, but I assume that this is water that was NOT salted when cooking the pasta, right? Or, is it ok to use salted pasta water as long as it is not the only type of water the plant receives? It just seems like salt would be a bad idea all around.

It would be fine. The sodium and combo that with the fact that you are watering it down. It wouldn’t be enough

Hmmm...live on Vancouver Island, BC. Average soil pH 4.5 to 5.5. Tap water added to baking soda bubbles.
Some of the notes re alkaline results sound appealing for plants that need that...?
Also...because of limited opportunities in a very small yard to safely compost or get rid of weeds I have started a low-tech "weed and feed" system using a garbage can filled with weeds, a little soil and the occasional addition of urine (gasp). Seems like fresh organic grey water may benefit this..?
Just a note: veggies seem to thrive when watered with a diluted portion of this; solves the problem of what to do with weeds; and once the weeds are rotting in the mix I strain them off and add them to my compost.
Does adding the fresh ' organics' water make sense?

What a coincidence, today I measured the water hardness values from my pondwater because we had more than twice the average amount of rain during the month of May, which lowers the water hardness below ideal values. And the plants are growing and depleting the minerals in the water as well. And the values were waaaayyyy too low, which causes a negative snowball effect of issues in a pond. For a plastic pond or a pond with a pond liner, or any pond that is not natural and that doesn't have a natural source of minerals too much rainwater or snow is not good. And it is recommended to add extra pond specific clay minerals on a regular bases throughout the year. It also helps to prevent algae growth and drastic PH fluctuations.

Hi Ashley, wondering if pasta water or water used to cook vegetables is problematic since you usually will have salted the water?

In an open soil system I wouldn’t stress over that .

Few water savings things I do. If I steam vegetables, I save the water, refrigerate (or use right away) for rice, pasta, oatmeal etc. I’m from California (in an area off the state’s water project). We have a motto, if it’s yellow let it mellow and brown, flush it down 😊 I also save the cold water while I am waiting for hot water, takes about 2 gallons for my tankless hot water heater to get hot water.

Didn’t Idaho just destroy farmers by stopping the water flow for 500,000 acres or something like that. I only read the headline but it’s gettin crazy

Ya, it's a water rights thing. The annoying part is, they've still got plenty of water, but the senior water right holder needs their aquifer topped up, which means anyone junior to them gets a complete hold. The company that holds the rights supplies 260k acres, so they're withholding from 500k of farmland which makes the optics really bad.
