Thanks for this video Mike. Really appreciating the content. It’s actually hard to find a straight answer from anyone about the differences between life cycle and processes. I think you’ve made it clear here though. Is it safe to say the following;? Project Life Cycle = Define, Plan, Deliver, Close Project Processes = Initiation, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, Closing? There so much similar terminology across videos and books so I’m still slightly confused!
Julian - you have put your finger on a real terminology issue. Yes, I use the terms Define, Plan, Deliver, and close for the stages of a lifecycle. You can have more stages (possibly fewer) and you can use other names for those stages. Here's the killer, Initiation is another name for the define stage... Although PMI on their current (6th) Edition of the PMBOK Guide uses the terms 'Initiation, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, Closing', they use them for Process Groups - they group the processes by the stages of a project. These are not the project processes. A lifecycle stage is a part of a project that moves the project from one status to another. Processes are sequences of actions that bring about a change. Each aspect of a project has many processes. PMBOK allocates its processes into Knowledge Areas and into Process Groups. The KAs are the disciplines of Project management (see below for a detailed article on KAs). The Process groups are the clustering by lifecycle stage. So, no, Initiation, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, Closing are not processes. An example of a process is 'Build a Project Plan' or 'Communicate with your Project Board'. It's a sequence of actions, usually with inputs, outputs, controls, and an operator or source of power.
What is the best opensource software tools you suggest for project management, including the features such as monitoring the task, auto report generation, integrated document management, user and group control/team collaboration, finance and accouting information manipulation, supplier management, timeline visualization, task management, decision making based on timeline, dashboard for summary of whole project status etc. Thanks
