I enjoyed the movie, but it was pretty far from accurate if you look it up. Vince Papale was a 6'3 speedster and he wasn't a walk-on. He was invited to camp. It's still cool that he made the roster, but the movie took a lot of liberties with the truth.
I'm not going to bother and google it but I recall a number of years back when this movie came out I remember reading that Vince ran track in college (Pole vault or triple jump or hurdles??? Can't quite remember) and he definitely had exceptional foot speed....but as you say this was still a very good movie....also Vince was not exactly a looker either so Mark Wahlberg was a big step up for him in the looks department...of course Elizabeth banks was probably also a lot hotter than any girl vince ever dated...in other words, it was a movie... :)
better than semi-pro, he played for the Philadelphia Bell in the WFL. He was at this tryout, but he was actually invited and put in the front of the line.
I've seen pictures of Vince from that time, and he was actually fairly handsome. His girlfriend/wife was and still is very pretty as well; but pint taken, it is a movie.
He was on the track team at St. Joseph's (on scholarship) as a pole vaulter...he did have good speed and pretty good athleticism and he played briefly for a semi pro team but afterwards also played 2 seasons with a WFL team, so he definitely had football credentials and was invited to camp....but obviously that story line isn't exactly made for the movies like a dock worker/bar tender making a public try out with an NFL team.
mishkasimons Actually I just remembered it from when the movie came out, I saw Vince Papale interviewed and he talked about his history....he made a point of saying he didn't play in college but had played two years in the WFL.
In reality, Papale was personally invited to a private tryout by the General Manager of the Eagles. They were impressed by Papale's brief stint with the Minor League Team, The Philadelphia Bell.
What made me laugh...is how the hell can you show up for a try out in the f'ing NFL and not be in shape? What some people think is beyond me. It does make it funny though.
Most of those guys showed up because they are Eagles fans, they didn't expect to make the team. Cowboys did the same thing, that open tryout. It was a publicity gimmick for all teams.
Chuck.Raney Raney Papale wasn't actually a walk on he was invited and he'd played semi-pro football before. He was also 6'2 and really fast, not 5'10 and medium speed but with heart. The movie took liberties with the story.
He was on the track team at St. Joseph's (on scholarship) as a pole vaulter...he did have good speed and pretty good athleticism and as you say he played briefly for a semi pro team but afterwards also played 2 seasons with a WFL team, so he definitely had football credentials....but obviously that story line isn't exactly made for the movies like a dock worker/bar tender making a public try out with a NFL team.
He played in the old World Football League prior to trying out for the Eagles. Like the movie "Rudy" the writers leave out a bunch of facts to bring the drama up a notch.
the thing is most of time, he was shown running alone. hmm, maybe he was a really good starter. Otherwise, he was just running alone. maybe he was alone like bolt in some sense. hmm...
And the beginning all I can think of is when Bill Burr was talking about the Six Million Dollar Man and how they had to have him running in slow motion because you wouldn't believe that these guys we're running fast at all. 😂
I understand it's not a documentary but when you advertise that it's 'based on a true story' and Vince does press to promote/support the film, I think the audience expects it to be accurate. This one... not so much.
The Eagles we're in Invincible with Mark Wahlberg. Mark Wahlberg was in The Departed with Matt Damon. Matt Damon was in Oceans Eleven with Julia Roberts. Julia Roberts was in Flatliners with Kiefer Sutherland. Kiefer Sutherland was in A Few Good Men with Jack Nicholson.
@imaouima yeah hollywood will embellish that story, he'll have been born and raised in an internment camp with no legs, cancer survivor, ate dirt for norishment, etc.
He looks hilarious when he runs with those short arms flailing back and forth, specially due to how much muscle is on them. xD Just looks funny. A midget running.
Saints signed Michael Lewis who was an ex IFL player turned beer man, and he actually was awesome. He was blazing fast on returns back when I used to go to the games all the time.
i understand the period and setting of the movie and also that people have been progressively getting faster and faster over time, but a 4.5 40 is not 'fast'
Even today a 4.5 40 at the NFL scouting combine is faster than the avg. for WR's...if you don't believe me look it up, I have and it's true....a true 4.5 is damn fast and will make you one of the fastest guys on the field in most games.
Good movie but a lot of BS. Papale was well known from his WFL days and his all out play and speed on punt coverage with the Philadelphia Bell.. He was invited by the Eagles for a private workout due to his special teams skills. He wasn't chosen from a lot of "unknowns". Vermeil did that as a publicity stunt and Papale wasn't there that day. Papale was never considered for anything but special teams. Also, Papale's stature was much larger than Wahlbergs. Papale was 6-3 and around 200 pounds. Disney has a special way of stretching the truth...to be kind. About the only truth in this movie is it was Vermeils first year and the Eagles had gone back to green helmets.
Robert Canady haha. I know Mark Whalbergh was only 34 at the time. But holy crap, he looks old in the movie. Totally not believeable for him to be playing a 30 year old.
Joe Cap The Eagles are actually doing good with Carson Wentz as their QB. Of course they’re now fucked because of his knee injury, but they still have a shot next season.
I remember watching this with my brothers and dad and it honestly never gets old
Word
What he goes through and then he makes it damn
I love that line.
"How long you been having trouble with this?"
"Since i bought it"
what a motivating movie when you think about it
He's smiling.....Mark Wahlberg is fucking smiling.
Khey Kham because his burgers are selling.
Just because he has glorious hair doesn't mean you can put him in slo mo
Yes it does
@@TheNerdForAllSeasons That's the exact response I was going to say. Lol
a speedy guy who catches everything? let's put him on Special Teams where nothing will ever be thrown towards him.
Crazy right… he would have been my Jackson from the new age Eagles

YTEdy they change it him being a smaller guy who was a walk on to show the adversity
It's called a movie not a documentary two different things even a "biopic" is more of a movie than a documentary
He was on the track team at St. Joseph's (on scholarship) as a pole vaulter...he did have good speed and pretty good athleticism and he played briefly for a semi pro team but afterwards also played 2 seasons with a WFL team, so he definitely had football credentials and was invited to camp....but obviously that story line isn't exactly made for the movies like a dock worker/bar tender making a public try out with an NFL team.
steve Fowler someone knows how to use google
mishkasimons Actually I just remembered it from when the movie came out, I saw Vince Papale interviewed and he talked about his history....he made a point of saying he didn't play in college but had played two years in the WFL.
steve Fowler I saw an interview with the pope he said you chat BS
mishkasimons I'm not sure using the Pope's name in a lie puts you in a very good light.
Everyone knows the most realistic football movie ever was: 'The Garbage Picking Field Goal Kicking Philadelphia Phenomenon'.
Congrats Philly, 2k18
I Love this movie!!!!!
2020, been watchiN this masterpiece.
Every team should host open tryouts whether they played or not
FACTSSSSSSSSSSS I would
anyone else notices that in the opening scenes of this movie the music was by Bachman Turner Overdrive and Canadian Rock band from the 70's
johnw ruddick rock hall of fame 2020! Well gotta settle for the Guess Who!
This is in my top 3 sports films ever made just after Warrior and Blue Chips (both starring Nolte).
I got some gems for you: By The Sword (1991), Gladiator (1992), Breaking Away (1979). Go watch.
What, no North Dallas Forty? Nolte again, btw.
All time is a wild take

What made me laugh...is how the hell can you show up for a try out in the f'ing NFL and not be in shape? What some people think is beyond me. It does make it funny though.
+David Hutchinson There's different levels of "in shape". Lots of players show up to camp "out of shape" so to speak.
Most of those guys showed up because they are Eagles fans, they didn't expect to make the team.
Cowboys did the same thing, that open tryout. It was a publicity gimmick for all teams.
Chuck.Raney Raney
Papale wasn't actually a walk on he was invited and he'd played semi-pro football before. He was also 6'2 and really fast, not 5'10 and medium speed but with heart. The movie took liberties with the story.
That part of the movie is true...Dick Vermeil did hold open tryouts his first year in Philly...
He was on the track team at St. Joseph's (on scholarship) as a pole vaulter...he did have good speed and pretty good athleticism and as you say he played briefly for a semi pro team but afterwards also played 2 seasons with a WFL team, so he definitely had football credentials....but obviously that story line isn't exactly made for the movies like a dock worker/bar tender making a public try out with a NFL team.
one of the best videos ever
He played in the old World Football League prior to trying out for the Eagles. Like the movie "Rudy" the writers leave out a bunch of facts to bring the drama up a notch.
why would you film it in slow motion? cause it now actually looks like it's slower than glacier
the thing is most of time, he was shown running alone. hmm, maybe he was a really good starter. Otherwise, he was just running alone. maybe he was alone like bolt in some sense. hmm...
argh, that is a lot of effort someone has put in paying attention to details in such a short period of time in such a, you know, movie. Oh well!
if they had filmed it at regular speed then mark wahlberg would've actually had to run a 4.5...
cuz mark wahlberg can't run a 4.5....
Because*
And the beginning all I can think of is when Bill Burr was talking about the Six Million Dollar Man and how they had to have him running in slow motion because you wouldn't believe that these guys we're running fast at all. 😂
Inspiring movie.
Great Movie . !!
I didn't play college ball
0:22 slow motion for the ladiessssss
;)

The Eagles we're in Invincible with Mark Wahlberg.
Mark Wahlberg was in The Departed with Matt Damon.
Matt Damon was in Oceans Eleven with Julia Roberts.
Julia Roberts was in Flatliners with Kiefer Sutherland.
Kiefer Sutherland was in A Few Good Men with Jack Nicholson.
Coach kind of got out there a little late. What if he got the car started??
They had telegrams back then.
great movie
He was playing in world league movie makes it look like he was some guy iff the street
wahlberg had the flow with the hair man
THEY DID IT CUZ IT WENT WITH THE SONG
Fun Fact: Mark was filming The Invisible and The Departed back to back
American football is the perfect sport. Next level? Doom arena!
Smh Vince was a 6"2 college track athlete....he was invited to camp after playing in the WFL. Tell the real story Hollywood
Stop crying it's a movie not a documentary
vatoloco13 it’s also a real story though
Wait until the Colin Kaepernick story comes out...
@imaouima yeah hollywood will embellish that story, he'll have been born and raised in an internment camp with no legs, cancer survivor, ate dirt for norishment, etc.
True, but he never played college football. That’s the point. How, pray tell, is that not accurate?
Well I know what I'm watching. Never seen this movie before
2:38... "Yeah... so how f*cking old are you?"
For everyone a 4.5 back then is a 4.3 today
Gotta love seeing Tony Luke in the movie
I don't recall the Vet having a track around the field...
He looks hilarious when he runs with those short arms flailing back and forth, specially due to how much muscle is on them. xD Just looks funny. A midget running.
so .... how old WAS he?
theID2 30 years old.
30.
But he had played in the World Football League. He was no beginner.
Was this how tryouts were for the NFL?
Not really, that year the Eagles did open tryouts to revamp the fans.
Damian Espinoza Oh… was that done often or was it like a one time thing that the only the eagles did?
Bleach Videos one time thing I think
Lots of teams did it. It was publicity, not a real tryout.
That they actually found a guy they could play? a Miracle.
Saints signed Michael Lewis who was an ex IFL player turned beer man, and he actually was awesome. He was blazing fast on returns back when I used to go to the games all the time.
I hate the Eagles as a Giants Fan, but I do love this movie!
Eagles!!!! Finally did it!
Hell yea baby!! Took down Tom Brady the best of the best, when it mattered the absolute most!!
He doesn't mind you asking how old he is... doesn't mean he's gonna he's gonna anwser you 😂😂
i bought this movie on dvd yesterday. it cost me 3 dollars.
This movie inspired me to follow Mark Wahlberg's movies and career.
when he runs he turns into Matt Damon and when he slows down he turns into Mark walhberg .Is this magic ???
Matt was faster so they let him do it
Kinnear great actor
funny mark was a patriot fan and he play for eagles probably love the sport doesn't care what team his gonna play with even acting for this movie
Where the hell is the Stranglehold scene!!?
yeah
I thought Tony Danza played Vince Papali.
He played a fictionalized placekicker by the name of Barney Gorman in "The Garbage Picking, Field Goal Kicking, Philadelphia Phenomenon".
i understand the period and setting of the movie and also that people have been progressively getting faster and faster over time, but a 4.5 40 is not 'fast'
Bobby Swags thats pretty fast dude bo jackson ran a 4.3
4.2
Look up the times of football players. It's pretty fast
Yes it is.
Even today a 4.5 40 at the NFL scouting combine is faster than the avg. for WR's...if you don't believe me look it up, I have and it's true....a true 4.5 is damn fast and will make you one of the fastest guys on the field in most games.
Casting picked a guy 5 foot 8 snd 170 pounds . Whalberg says the Boston bombing was fake but he made the movie anyways.
this is why i love philly

I'm 15 and my 40 is 4.9... probably 4.8 now
Go Eagles!
M9 MARK JUST MOSSED THAT BLACK DUDE
Took him 15 seconds to run it. 4.5 my ass...

Ιερώνυμος Κόραξ 30
Robert Canady
haha. I know Mark Whalbergh was only 34 at the time. But holy crap, he looks old in the movie. Totally not believeable for him to be playing a 30 year old.
the only time the eagles where good lmao😂😂😂😂
Joe Cap The Eagles are actually doing good with Carson Wentz as their QB. Of course they’re now fucked because of his knee injury, but they still have a shot next season.
Courtney Lightcap they have Nick Foles, it isn’t his first rodeo and the defense has been winning games for them so they should be good...

Walker Thomas Hall Michael Wilson Michelle
no entiendo este juego
Enjoy the fuckin film instead of analysing the figures!!!!!!
He looks so akward😂😂
Marky Mark is too small to play an NFL player..
terrible route runner...
hit like if this gave you a semi
4.5 ?? lol...thats slower than a glacier in this NFL world we have now.
Really, because Aaron Jones ran 4.56 and he seems fast to me.
GOD IS REAL LOVE AND FORGIVE YOUR ENEMIES REPENT TRUST GOD ACCEPT JESUS AS YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR GOD BLESS JESUS CAN SAVE YOU AMEN
4.5 is actually pretty slow a solid 4 is good tho.
Dumb. 4.5 is very fast, just not elite fast. Very few safeties can run faster than 4.5
@@franzschubert10 yeah idk why i said a solid 4 lol 4.5 is fast. 4.3 and below is ELITE ELITE
If you run below a 4.3 you're among the fastest .0005 percent of people in America.
4.5 speed is still top 1% of all American male athletes.
Worst running form ever!
como se llama la rola, no saben?
